They came from the darkest places: secluded monasteries, the Carpathian mountains, galaxies under siege. They were men with the blackest pasts-warriors, vampire monks, leaders of armies-but whose passions burned like dying stars. They had one purpose: to find those women who fulfilled them, completed them, and made them rage with a fire both holy and profane. They sought s

Well, this is the second novella in this series I've read and I have to say I think I prefer the novellas to the novels. Perhaps it's the shorter wordcount requirements that cut all the stuff I dislike about the series out and predisposes the author to strong, take charge women and forthright men. In both of the novellas the males were very honest before they did the binding and the women were headstrong, courageous, and not prone to hysteria. In the novels the thing that makes me want to walk a...more

Wounded and trapped by the undead, Traian Trigovise gained strength and hope with the knowledge that he had finally found his lifemate, all he had to do was survive and find her. After suffering her own wounds, Joie Sanders was drawn to the man she had only seen in her dreams, for some reason the mountainous caves were calling and she had to follow even though the voice she found so alluring was telling her to run in the opposite direction, she never ran from anything and she would prove it to h...more

I started this novella out of obligation, I guess, since it was included at the end of my borrowed copy of Dark Prince. I wasn't really interested in continuing to read of the world introduced in Dark Prince, but I read on. This little book was better than Dark Prince, in my opinion, but just barely. I liked the two lead characters, Traian and Joie, much better than in Dark Prince. Basically, the storyline ran similar to the first book. You still had the ancient Carpathian finding his other half...more

I really enjoyed this novella that is part of the Dark series. Since it was included in the copy of "Dark Prince" that I received, it was out of sequence, but that didn't really make much of a difference since the storyline doesn't rely on prior novels, although it was fun to see a mention of Mikhail, Raven, and Gregori. This was a fun story between Traian and Joie--bodyguard and pyschic who comes to Traian pyschically when they are both wounded and returns in body later with her sister and brot...more

I read this as part of an anthology, 'The Only One'. I have copied my review below:

I had planned on only reading Dark Descent. But each story was so brief that I figured I'd give them all a try. I'm glad I did. I enjoyed both the Star Queen and Sacrilege.

My first love is historical romance. But some time ago a friend got me to read Dark Prince, the first in the Carpathian series. So now I have to finish them all. Dark Descent is number 11. Once I finish one, I'm always ready to go back to histo...more

Dark Descent would be one of my favourites in this series, mainly, I think, because of the wonderful relationship between the two lovers. No coyness on her behalf, and understanding about her close relationship with her siblings and family on his. It was wonderful to see true trust between the Carpathian and his lifemate that doesn't show in many of the other books in the series. Exciting adventure and it's great to see Gary meeting up with someone for himself.

I read this in a couple hours (spread over a day). It's only about 120 pages, but I'm a very slow, distracted reader. This series has become my guilty pleasure. I like the female character in this much more than Raven in The Dark Prince.

Note: I read this as a "special short story" at the end of Dark Prince, so it was out of sequence. Doesn't matter! Completely independent story, but very well woven into the Carpathian universe.

I really liked this story, but I wished it had been longer and more in depth. It feels like everything was moving in fast forward. You know that Joie feels she is going crazy before she actually gets to see Traian and you find out he has had several battles with the vampire before being found in the cave, but you really don't get a full sense of how they got to that point. It jumps from their first meeting when Joie is shot to their meeting in the cave. Their entire relationship consists of basi...more

This is a short story, an anthology with featuring three awesome authors. I personally picked this one up for Christine's addition to the Dark series. I can say that the smaller books have better plots, and better characters. Much like the other anthology which contained Dark Hunger; Dark Descent features a a Carpathian who actually cares about his mate.

This installment introduces us to Traian, who was one of the many warriors sent out by the Prince to rid the world of the dreaded vampire. In d...more

It's taken me a couple years reading a lot of paranormal books to fully appreciate the Dark series. I've read a lot of both good and bad books, and that puts these books in a new light. There are a few things that annoy me about these Carpathians, but overall I do love them. So what annoys me, you say? Mostly that they can be somewhat narrow-minded about their women, also that some of their women can be a bit too 'damsels in distress' from time to time.

Joie, thankfully, isn't a whiny brat. She's...more

Traian Trigovise.. a hunter, sent out hundreds of years ago, as the Carpathian race was declining, to fight vampires.... and his foe now is one that was sent out at the same time as him, but who turned. Traian was in a group of hunters sent out by the prince is a new concept too... and we have not had a hint of specifically Traian in other stories (at least not that I recall).

The series is taking a more serious focused bend in defining the evils attacking them... and in this book, the clues that...more

Dark Descent is a novella in Feehan's Caparthian series. As I've loved this series, I was intrigued about who the author would focus on next. Overall, I found the story an easy, enjoyable read w/ memorable characters and a fast moving plot (I hope some of the characters introduced in this story will make a reappearance in later books). I would def recommend this book to other readers, adding it can be read as a stand alone.

My first audio book experience and I learned some things about my ability to listen. The book was wonderful, Feehan's characters capitavated as usual. Cook's voice was animated and brilliant in her interpertation of the character voices. Parts of this book seemed familair, as if I had read it before but I can not for the life of me figure out why. oh well I still loved every minute.

I'd have to say that so far this is one of my favorite's in the dark series. Jolie is a strong, confident woman who doesn't suddenly back down to her lifemate. Instead she fights and works with him all the way. We also get to meet Gary again, who originally appears in Dark Magic, and we meet a family of telepath's which sets up more possibilities for the series.

I read this novella because it was included in the copy of Dark Prince that I read. I liked this story a bit better than I did Dark Prince. perhaps because this was #11 in the series so Ms Feehan has a little more writing experience under her belt. I'm still not sure if I'll read any more of the series.

I just can't understand how the lead female character accepts all the dramatic, paranormal changes to her life so easily. It seems to be an unfair representation of females. I loved the other books in the series but this leading female just was too accepting for my liking.
Catlin
Suprisingly, I prefered this over much of the authors series. If you read my reviews, you know my opinions on Feehan's creations, but I did rather enjoy reading this one and not in a vaguely amused sort of way either. My suggestion: Give it a go! :-)
Ruthy
Traian and Joie are made for each other and most of the book is in a cave. Is also short. The plot is just like the others stories except that this girl grew up with a normal loving family, which was about time. Not everyone's childhood is broken.
Lyn Mckenzie
I cant rate Christine Feehan highly enough in ALL her books i have read which includes the Dark Series and The Ghostwalkers. Her talent for drawing you into the story is unbelievable! Would give more than 5 stars if i could!!!!!
Erinaceina
I read this in paper format when it was published in the back of Dark Prince.

Traian has faced his enemy for thousands of years. Finding Joie, his lifemate, makes him even more determined to help his species, and gives him a new perspective on the humans around him.
Marilyn
I like it when the strong women get to stay strong and aren't turned into mush by their men. Traian trusts Joie's abilities and respects her more than Lucian did with Jaxon.
Vain Desi
I'm glad I'm stopping on a good note. There was a lot of new stuff in this one and I can see where the series is leading, but with this one, I'm really done.

Dark Descent was a good story but ended so abruptly that I thought pages were missing. Rebecca Cook did a good job telling the story.

Carpathians rock
The world that you are included in believable and easy to understand and follow as it expands with each book.

I only finished reading this book yesterday and now I no longer remember what it was about. That should tell you a lot. =p

This is a shorter story, about 4 hours on audio.
It was a nice story but like all the rest in this series, it lacks originality. This is a series where the males know their "life mate" when they see her. It's always the same thing, over and over. The man sees his life mate, he can instantly see color and she becomes the other half of his soul.
She still wrote a story where they get to know each other's personality but it's usually so they female, who doesn't have this reaction, can fall in love....more
