I came across this book at Barnes & Noble while I was at Union Station in DC and had to call a friend who has encyclopedic knowledge of books of this genre.
I was pulled in immediately by the cover and decided that I was going to buy it on my way home.
How could you not want to read a book about someone like Lincoln, who seemingly faced tragedy upon tragedy in his personal life only to be doubly tested in his political life.

I usually don't read biographies or vampire lit. My boyfriend's mom passed along "Abraham Lincoln" Vampire Hunter," and I politely accepted. I remember rolling my eyes the first time I spied the flashy cover in the Minneapolis airport. Some weeks prior in a pitifully sparse lit section of Borders I realized the tremendous volume of vampire-themed novels. Author Seth Grahame-Smith is not alone. Authors are courting vampires like David Letterman and production assistants. I've never

Okay. Having seen the title, how can I not read this? It's too wonderfully weird and silly not to read.
And what makes it work for me even more is...having seen a very serious catalog of American antiques (they specialise in Civil War-era items) that listed as from St.-Louis 1856 a boxed (patented! Dr. Someone's!) anti-vampire kit (two pistols, bullet mould, silver bullets, ivory cross that converts to a stake, vial of holy water, small mirror) for approx. $2500...I have to read this More...

I've been a Wisconsinite my whole life. I know cheese.
That said, I read 131 pages of this before I put it down. After all, cheese can be fun.
However, ALVH was more your store-brand Velvetta than your aged sharp cheddar.
I kept reading for a couple of reasons.
1) It was SO much better than Pride & Prejudice & Zombies
2) The concept was intriguing

Abraham Lincoln is one of my personal heroes. I enjoy reading about his life and times, the Civil War and the biographies or diaries of people who lived through it.
I also enjoy dark urban fantasy; urban romance just pisses me off.
I should like this, right? Right?
Actually, I am pretty ambivalent about it. I enjoyed the story. It could have been any main character and the story of how vampires influenced the Civil War could have been an interesting premise. The More...

Here I go again...braving the waters of controversy in a skiff of electrons.... I know a lot of you like this book, some of you like it immensely. It caught my eye because (let's face it) this is less than usual subject matter. I suppose I expected the topic to be dealt with in a somewhat tongue and cheek manner. I'm not familiar Seth Grahame-Smith's other work, none of the others caught my interest. I'm not, after all a Jane Austen fan and I am relatively conservative, so his prior works just d

So Abraham Lincoln was the great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather of Sam and Dean Winchester.
Kidding.
Okay so this book was chopped into 3 parts. The first chapter is The Boy. it's basically about Abraham and how he was during childhood days. Part 1 shows where Abraham started and how it - him being a vampire hunter-all started.
The 2nd part is actually the most fictitious part since it is the part where Abe is very much active More...

I have to admit, I wanted the book because of the cover art and because of the ludicrous premise. Abraham Lincoln being a secret vampire hunter, and that being a big influence in his stopping American slavery.
I personally find this story extremely interesting, even though it has the ability to cross over to cheesy at any moment, it actually doesn't. The vibe is very serious, violent, and tragic. Even when they introduce unlikely but just as famous names/characters, you get to see the s More...

I loved this book and I love the way Grahame-Smith combines historical fact with vampire fiction utterly seamlessly creating a highly 'plausible' and very believable version of Abraham Lincoln's life and death. The writing is vivid and descriptive and takes the reader into the heart of the action and into the mind of one of America's greatest President's as he tackles the forces of Slavery and the Undead all in one foul swoop. A brilliant read that is a vast relief from the recent trend of sop

Probably my favorite of the vampire hunters, sorry Buffy. Seth Grahame-Smith gave us Pride and Prejudice and Zombies*, neat idea but not nearly as bloody as a A. Lincoln. With almost all original story plus Lincoln's journal entries, it's a pretty cool read. I'm just glad Ms. Austen and her world of "ladies" have the day off.
*Note on the Quirk Books series. Yeah PPZ was cute but contained little content they get better. Trust me.

I’d seen Grahame-Smith’s Pride, Prejudice And Zombies and thought the premise was great but wasn’t interested enough to pick it up. Abraham Lincoln as vampire hunter, however, did the trick. Once I picked the book up, I could barely set it down and this is while I was on vacation in Puerto Vallarta. So, to heck with you, Seth! You ruined my vacation! Just kidding. This book is excellent. The research that went into this book must have been extraordinary! Grahame-Smith seamlessly weaves th

I enjoyed it. Definitely high concept, and thankfully written straight-faced. Grahame-Smith didn't feel the need to make it even more wAcKy and GoNzo than the material demanded, he just took the title and elaborated on it. And oddly, Lincoln would have made a great vampire hunter. Plus, good to read a vampire horror (for all intents and purposes) tale.

I didn't finish this book. The premise intrigued me, but it didn't hold my attention. I think it had to do with the style of writing. I get that it needed to be that way, but it was off putting. I will however watch the movie. This story I think will transfer well to film.

Think you know your sixteenth president? Think again.
Seth Grahame-Smith rewrites history in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, using supposed excerpts from Lincoln's vampire hunting journals (and, in so doing, revealing the true motives behind slavery, the Civil War, et al). Though not nearly as uproariously funny as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Abraham Lincoln is still funny and a breezy read.

History was never my strong suit. I understand the importance of knowing (local, national, world, etc.) history, but classroom history lessons never engaged me. "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" was, in a word, engaging. This is how to learn history. "AH:VH" is an outline of historical facts filled in with fictional action. Knowing that Grahame-Smith based his story in historical fact, I learned (or re-learned) a lot about Lincoln's personal as well as political life. Of cour

This afternoon I finished “Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter,” by Seth Grahame-Smith, the same guy who brought us “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.” I read it entirely at Barnes & Noble over the past two months, taking advantage of the ability to read a book for an hour on my Nook when in the store. Had 60 pages left today.
This was a fun, harmless read. The book was published in March 2010. Grahame-Smith takes real-life events and injects a world in which vampires exist. Lincoln learns a More...

This book is perhaps one of the best historical-fantasy-fiction books I ever read; well if that is a category to put a book in. The book starts off in retrospect. A guy owns a store, he lives a humble life until a man who wears shades started to come in the store as a regular. First his visits were usually marked with a "hello how do you do?" conversation until one day the guy started to become more inquisitive; asking questions such as "what are your aspirations?", "how

I was originally drawn to this book because of the upcoming movie being released on June 22, 2012. I wanted to read the book before the movie just to see how the whole thing stuck together. It was an enjoyable, simple read that flowed through the life and times of Abraham Lincoln well.
The author goes to great lengths to show the reader how Lincoln was driven by his desire to rid the nation of the undead. As major and minor events in his life seemed to bode well with the interspersing More...

As I sit here, staring out of my office window, admiring Mother Natures wrath in the form of a torrential downpour, I am thankful of 2 things.
1. I’m not out in this crap trying to lug around 2 small children and
2. I’m glad I don’t live in a mud hut like poor unfortunate Abraham Lincoln.
I have never claimed to be much of a history buff, as a matter of fact, unless it has to do with WWII I could really give a flying crap, but that all changed when I picked up “Abraha More...

I certainly enjoyed this book more than the author's previous book Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. In that one there was such a sharp drop in writing quality and style between Austen and Grahame-Smith that it was unpleasant to read. It also tended towards the 5th grade boy level of gross out humor.
This book suffers from neither problem, and develops characters in a way that the author hadn't really needed to do in P&P&Z. I had started this one awhile ago, stopped for some reason abo More...

Some people prefer their Lincoln biographies with a folksy slant, thick with anecdotal stories of ditch-digging and whisker-growing. Others prefer their Lincoln biographies with a more political bent, analyzing him as the first great success of the Republican Party and the political machinations that held his administration together.
Seth Grahame-Smith? He prefers his Lincoln biography with a few vampires in it.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith seemed to me like it wouldn’t be a very good book when I first picked it up; it almost seemed like it would read like one of those monster battle movies, and judging strictly by the summary and the cover, it seemed that the more appropriate title would have been Abraham Lincoln Vs. Vampires. I was incredibly wrong. This is one of those books where you don’t want to put it down until you are done. The majority of the story is told through one

I often use Abraham Lincoln as inspiration in persevering despite failure. However, I know little about him and don't usually care to learn more, being not a fan of reading biographies. However, the title caught my eye and the premise was just too intriguing for me not to check it out. I found myself caught up in Lincoln's life and the Civil War seen through the prism of a vampire infestation in America. Mr. Grahame-Smith does a very clever job of weaving together real facts, carefully-doctor
