When I first read The Body Finder I was struck with the feeling I had found something special, complete with the a great plot, heartwarming romance, suspense, and character development. So when I heard there would be a sequel I found myself counting the days until the release. Then (finally) I read Desires of the Dead and I must say I feel a little let down.

So when I heard there would be a sequel I found myself counting the days until the release. Then (finally) I read Desires of the Dead and I must say I feel a little let down.

I stayed up all night reading The Body Finder because as much as I wanted to put it down and get some rest for work in the morning, it wouldn’t release its hold on me. Naturally, I thought that the sequel would have the same effect - but it didn’t.

I struggled to get through this book and even found myself trying to remember why I was so enamored with the first one. To summarize my disappointments I will touch on 3 points:

The first being Violet. She was the biggest let down for me in this book. She was very jealous when it concerned Jay’s new-to-town friend Mike without just cause. At one point Jay even tried to make it up to Vi for spending so much time with Mike. She acted very childishly when afterwards he said he needed to stop by Mike’s to return something he’d left in the car while helping Jay with Violet’s surprise. I mean, really Violet? Get over yourself. Many other scenes in which she makes stupid mistake after stupid mistake follow this. Her inability to open up to ANYBODY throughout the book (including Jay and her family), her overreaction to a disagreement she had with Jay which caused her to miss TWO days of school and become severely depressed, her refusal to even consider her own safety as she places herself in extremely dangerous situations time after time… the list goes on and on.
Second is the relationship between Violet and Jay. Though many people will wonder why I see this as a downfall because obviously Jay is head-over-heels in love with Violet and treats her as though she could do no wrong – and what could possibly be wrong with that? I see things little more realistically. The main flaws in their relationship had to do with Violet’s hang-ups. I get it. Everybody has his or her own insecurities but whereas Jay was absolutely, sickeningly PERFECT when it concerned Violet, she was the complete opposite toward him and to me the imbalance was unfair to say the least. Also, sex does not necessarily show relationship progression in a positive light. If anything, it can be the cause for more problems and confusion and in light of Violet’s lack of confidence in Jay and his feelings for her (which I outlined above) I do not feel like this helped solidify their transition from best friends to a dating relationship.
Lastly, it would have been nice to get a little bit of a glimpse into the character of Rafe. As I closed the book after the final chapter, I know no more about him than when he was first introduced. I get that Derting may be trying to set things up for her next installment, but just a peek into his character would have been a nice treat. Especially since its pretty clear that if she does continue the series, he will most likely be a key player - possibly even a 2nd love interest (if all of the not-so-subtle sparks between him and Violet whenever they would touch means anything besides the fact that they both have paranormal abilities).

Okay, so maybe these two things shouldn't really go together. But it sure makes for the kind of story that I would want to read.

Written just like the first book we get the pov's in both Violet, and this time instead of the Hunter, we have a Stalker. I actually liked this one better. The Hunters thoughts were pretty dame freaky and while the Stalker was clearly not all there, it wasn't so bad, or at least, not for me.

Jay and Violet are hands down one of the sweetest couples in YA literature. To many yummy moments that just melted me. But, they also felt different in this one.
Poor Violet, she has some real hard issues to deal with and apart of me felt really bad for her, but the other part, well, it kinda wanted to smack her. Just a little.
In one scene she totally took it a little to far, and while I get it, I was still pretty surprised that she had that in her. The secrets she's keeping was beyond frustrating, I mean I understand that she's scared, and honestly who can blame her? But the girl has to have realized all along that she was never ever alone in this.
As for Jay? ~sigh~ Jay Jay Jay, what happen to ya buddy? I can almost hear the crack of the whip in the background during that scene. Tsk! What happened to the stead-fast, firm but gentle guy that was in the first book?
As always, Jay is the knight-in-shinning-armor. Fiercely protective and hopelessly devoted, and that's a good thing, but some of the scenes just...didn't add up to there original personalities, or maybe it's just me.
Still, I adore these two and if I'm being honest, they are the reason I love this series so much.

On to the flip side. The Stalker. No worries, I wont spoil anything, but I will say that it's nicely done with a good twist. I didn't see it coming. I love how Derting can separate the two sides of the story. It's very complex and intense and definitely kept me on my toes. As for the new characters, they were fine I guess, I don't really have anything to say about them. The FBI was interesting, I can see something happening (hopefully) in the next book.

Overall, I really loved this one. Sure it had a few scenes that upset me, but that's why I loved it. If a book can piss me off then it means I care, or well, most of the time anywho's. This has all the elements I love in a great book. Mystery, suspense and swoon-worthy characters. I hope the series keeps going, I'm not ready for it to end just yet.

Things change, though, when she discovers the body of a young boy stashed in a cargo ship container in Seattle. This was an amazing sequel. It was what I hoped it would be--complete with the awesomeness that is the Jay and Violet love story. It was filled with new characters, new scenarios, new drama, new challenges. If you liked TBF then you will not be disappointed!

I am having a hard time writing a review for this novel. It was every bit as good as The Bodyfinder. All the same characters were there, but the focus was more on the kids this time than the parents. Chelsea had more "face time" so we got to learn more about her. Jay and Violet's relationship continued with some major hiccups. Anywho, intelligent review... yes! Yes, I can do that.

Violet and Jay have developed their romance. As they get deeper Violet becomes aware of new, protective feelings of Jay. She's become territorial, particularly when a new brother and sister, Mike and Megan, move into town. Besides that, Violet keeps experiences echos that signify bodies, bodies that will eat at her until she sees them laid to rest. She's already dealt with a mass murderer but now she has a new conflict... someone is stalking her, and Violet has to find out why... and who.

Like I said, or rather implied, I love these books. They are creepy in all the right ways, tender in all the right moments and.. better yet.. have a wholly believable female character helming the ship. Violet is perfect, her voice rings. It's refreshing to see a heroine who doesn't just crumble under her romance with Mr. Perfect (coughcoughbellacoughcough). Violet is independent, headstrong, intelligent, and charismatic. Violet also swears, and does stupid things, and gets horny, and jumps to conclusions. Violet is a real character, which makes her that much more fun to read. It's wonderful to find something in the young adult genre that is not just another abysmal Twilight clone. Especially now that so many publishers are publishing abysmal Twilight clones. I realize I am more or less repeating my impressions of The Body Finder, but the point is even more extraordinary with a sequel... the sequel stands up to the first one. That's probably the best praise I can offer to Derting.

5 out of 5 stars. If you haven't read The Body Finder yet, you are a fool.

While The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting ended on what seemed to be a final note, there is more to Violet’s story as we see in Desires Of The Dead, and in 2012, The Last Echo. Y’all Desires Of The Dead is action packed from the beginning. From a mysterious, foreshadowy prologue to new students at school, and Violet finding a body in Seattle which results in the FBI all up in her grill, the girl has a LOT to handle.

If you read my review of The Body Finder then you know I loved that and was so excited when I was able to get my hands on the second book in this series. While you are pretty much able to predict what happens in this sequel it was still a wonderful book that I could not put down. Violet is pulled into another mystery as she tries to figure out who is stalking her and leaving her ominous messages while also trying to adjust to going from best friends with Jay to boyfriend/girlfriend with him.

I really enjoyed The Body Finder and couldn't wait any longer to read the next book in the series. Everything that I loved about the first book (the suspense, the chemistry between Violet and Jay, the mystery) was here plus a few heartbreaking moments for me, but great additions to the storyline. I understand why Violet was hurt by something Jay did, but wished she didn't act so hasty. She really scared me for a while there since I've been rooting for them from the start.

Okay, I love Kimberly Derting and I'm really crazy about the Body Finder but for some reason, this sequel just wasn't as good as the first in the series. I hate to admit it but a lot of times when writers write a series, whether they are debut authors or have been writing for a long time, the second book isn't as good at the first. Sometimes, it just lacks the right substance or the first book is just so good that its impossible to top by its successor. In this case, it was the characters.

She even calls him the girl in the relationship in this book. This went on for half of the book until they finally give in and have sex, which was no surprise considering the situations they kept putting themselves in. I have real issues with 16 year olds having sex. Violet is already conflicted and confused about the change in their relationship and having sex is only something that will complicate it more. She is just so immature in this book. And to prove my point, she completely over reacts when Jay doesn't believe something that she does, and thinks that their whole relationship is over because of it. She goes all to pieces and can't handle going to school or anything. She holes up in her room for two days! I mean really if she can't handle this tiny sort of bump in a relationship, then there is no way she needs to be in a sexual relationship. Overall I felt the book was pretty predictable. There was no real mystery about who did anything, except for who killed the little boy at the beginning of the book, and that was because the book wasn't about that murder. It was just thrown in there to introduce Violet to the Profiler who she obviously will be working with from now on in the rest of the series. I also could have done without the language near the end of the book. Why throw in the "f" word several times suddenly? Overall I was disappointed in this book. (less)

Holy cow! Desires of the Dead is one of the best sequels I've read in a really long time. I forgot how amazing Kimberly's writing is. I'm literally at a lost for words.

Wow. Just...wow!

What I love about Desires of the Dead is how Kimberly write's from Violet's point of view, but switches every now and then to "the bad guy's" POV. This is what originally hooked me on The Body Finder. It's dark, it's twisted, it's made of win!

The book picked up where the last one left off. We meet some new characters, and we get to know some of the existing characters better. Violet and Jay continue to figure out being boyfriend and girlfriend as well as best friends. Violet is also still trying to figure out how to deal with her ability to see echoes of people whose lives were cut short. And she also sees the echoes of the person who cut that life short.

I will begin by saying that this book is not as good as the first one. The first one had suspense, strong characters, and an interesting romance. Unfortunately, the sequel fell short of my expectations.

I was so disappointed in the regressive character development displayed by Violet in this second entry. Actually, that's a lie. In truth, I downright despised the regressive personality traits possessed by Violet in this second book. There wasn't a thing she did that was admirable, mature, reasonable, etc. TBF had teenage silliness, but Violet also had a practical streak that prevented any real angst from discouraging my readership. Violet of DOTD is exactly the kind of teen that puts my thinking in a headlock that's inescapable. TBF duped me into believing that Violet is a different kind of `gifted' female heroine--an average teen girl who is resourceful and clear-minded while remaining slightly naïve.

In DOTD the heroine doesn't learn from any of the stupid things she should have learned from in book 1. This is then complicated by all the things she doesn't learn (as demonstrated by her idiotic behavior recycled ad nauseam) in book 2. She repeatedly invites complication into her life. She has no active sense--regardless of any realizations she makes throughout the story. Readers shouldn't be surprised when her light-bulb moments have dim to dark results. It's just one stupid move followed by subsequent stupid moves.

Supposedly Violet is trying to protect her friends and family. Violet has never been strong in and of herself. The very relationships that saved her in book 1 are the ones she risks out of some ill-founded belief that she's strong enough to manage on her own. Pfft, since when? She trusts people she doesn't know well, and won't trust the ones she does know well. She cannot communicate--to save her life--with the people she considers herself to be close to, yet she stalks off repeatedly to discuss and communicate her problems to strangers--who she knows have agendas of their own.

By rights Violet should lose Jay as a result of her bad choices in this story. Like one of the characters in DOTD, I kept "trying to imagine what it is that Jay could possibly see in that shell of a girl...Violet was empty". She is gifted, but she IS empty. There is nothing about Violet that makes her special or interesting--outside of an innate ability. She doesn't handle stress, conflict, or life well. I suppose she doesn't really handle it at all (much less well). She doesn't have the wherewithal to stand up to challenges from females who want her man. She leaves that to her friends. She doesn't know how to face the results of her own decisions. She lets her family deal with that. Violet gets herself in bad situations repeatedly, and doesn't have the brains to get herself out of them. There's always someone else to rescue her.

Violet has no exit strategy, but plenty of stupid, unnecessary drama that she often initiates. She's not smart, crafty, strong, or resourceful. She's a gifted stupid person--like incredible athletes who end up on the wrong side of the law. You give a stupid person power, and they're bound to find a way to screw their lives up with bad decision-making. That is Violet in this story. She's one of those females I absolutely detest--especially in modern romance--the dying swan. Arrgghhh! I really hated this `heroine' in this entry. I had hoped for better in this YA series. (less)

Desire of the Dead was a great sequel to The Body Finder. While the first book mostly focus on Jay and Violet’s growing relationship, Desire of the Dead explore more of Violet’s ability and how other people (other than Jay and her family) finds about her ability.

In Desires of the Dead, Jay and Violet are very wrapped up in each other and in their new relationship. Very. Let's just say if you love the steamy stuff, you'll be very happy with this one. Violet also just wants to be a normal high school girl with a new boyfriend. But of course, the "echoes" of the dead she hears won't leave her alone. She needs to learn more about her special talent and how to use it.

I finished with The Body Finder yesterday and was looking forward to a very thrilling and compelling sequel. This book was thrilling, alright - but compelling? NO. A huge, big no. Though I can safely say I loved this book, I wasn't quite as fond of it was I was the first in the series. Kimberly Derting's writing is mesmerizing, it's true, but there was something about Desires Of The Dead that felt a bit off. Nevertheless, it was still a great book and I'm extremely excited to see what Violet gets up to in the next installment.

We have several new characters in this book, yet only one of them truly intrigued me: Rafe. I'm not really sure what exactly is up with that dude, but I really hope we get a back story in the next book. I think he could be an extremely interesting character with a little development. Megan and Mike were also good characters - Megan more so then her older brother for the sheer fact that she was much more prominent. I honestly don't think the story would have been different had Mike not been in it, other than a few minor details would need to be altered. I liked him as much as I could, but I don't think I'd be sorry to see the back of him. I think the best thing about the characters in this book was that Chelsea got much more page time and she was developed a bit more. I really do love her. Jules, on the other hand, seemed to disappear. Not that she was a main character to begin with, but I was a little curious as to why she wasn't in the book more.

The plotline itself does fall flat in places and Violet's ability doesn't seem to feature as much. Though it's always there in the background, the first book focused on it prominently, whereas Desires Of The Dead was focused more on the mystery and romance aspects, rather than the supernatural. A complaint I had about The Body Finder - and Desires Of The Dead, in fact - was that we never really get an explanation as to why Violet can do what she does. Though it doesn't really matter much, I'm hoping that she - and subsequently us, the readers - will get some answers in the next book. Like I said, it's not really a big deal, it's just something I, personally, would enjoy reading about. The romance in this story wasn't as perfectly lovey-dovey as it was in The Body Finder which made it all the more believable. We had some major heartbreak in the middle and I really enjoyed it, to be perfectly honest. Realism is what I like.
