This is the second book in the "Seasons of Sugarcreek" series. Shelley's characters really come alive. I have come to really enjoy Shelley Shepard Gray's books and i now look forward to book number three in this series.

The focus of this book is on Clara Slabaugh who is the local Amish school teacher. She is disfigured from a household fire when she was small. Clara believes that when people look at her that all they can see are the scars. Until she meets Timothy Graber who has come from Indiana

Although I expected the "Amish-ness" of the story, it did get a bit too preachy in the last third of the book for my taste. I suppose it was a decent enough story (loney girl meets guy, guy 'attached' to another, girl falls for guy, guy falls for girl, break-up scene between guy and first girl, and then the happily ever after), but I was gagging toward the end.

Spring's Renewal by Shelley Shepard Gray is the second book in the Seasons of Sugarcreek series. Clara has resigned herself to living a quiet life in her Amish community. She finds fulfillment in her teaching job, but taking care of her demanding mother exhausts her strength. After being badly scarred by a fire as a child, Clara has largely been ignored by the men of Sugarcreek, an attitude her mother only reinforces by telling her that without physical beauty, she'll never catch a husband. “Spring’s Renewal” is the second book in Shelley Shepard Gray’s Seasons of Sugarcreek series.

Once again Shelley Shepard Gray has surprised me and I am so glad she did. I was so afraid this book would end in an unsatisfactory way but I was pleasantly surprised. Shelley has an astonishing talent.

From the minute I picked the book up, I could not bear to put it down. Of course being a mother of two rambunctious kiddos, I had to put it down a few times but it amazed even me how quickly I would pick i

I love reading about strong women and Clara Slabaugh certainly was that. Burned as a child with hot oil, she has undergone many surgeries but still carries scars on her face and arm. No one in Sugarcreek seems to want to court her, so she becomes the school teacher, resigned to being alone for the rest of her life, caring for her aging mother. But when Tim Graber comes to Sugarcreek from Indiana to help on his uncle's farm, he meets Clara and an immediate bond is formed between them. Tim has a g ...more

Spring's Renewal" by Shelley Shepard Gray
"Spring's Renewal" by Shelley Shepard Gray gets 5 stars from me. It is the second book in The Seasons Of Sugarcreek series. Clara is the town's schoolteacher and is loved by all the kinder but the town folk just stare at her scars. The scars are from an accident when she was 6. Tim comes to help his uncle on his farm. Tim sees Clara and instant attractive but he has a girlfriend Ruby Lee. When Clara sees Tim she starts to hope that maybe she can have want

Clara has gone through many operations and still remains badly scarred to where life has not been easy growing up. almost all amish/christian books follow the same formula: lonely person meets someone they are immediately attracted to, there are complications, pray about complications, resolved so the lonely person and attractive person are in love and now to be married, praising god.
which, for readers who enjoy these books, doesn't seem to be a problem. the writing is clean, easy, no one swears or has sex.
This happened to be a book i opened to the last 1/3 of the book and read to the end. it was preachy, but

In this novel, Shelly Gray explores the feelings the protagonist has in coping in the Amish community. Badly scared as a child in a fire, Clara has resigned herself to caring for her demanding mother, earning a living teaching school, and being alone and lonely. She has a rebellious streak that she is sometimes unable to rein in that causes her trouble with the elders of the community. A subplot concerning the trials of a young English woman round out the story. If you haven’t read the first boo ...more

"Spring’s Renewal" by Shelley Shepard Gray is a happy Christian romance story of how Cara, an Amish school teacher who is badly scarred from a fire sees her dreams come true.  When Tim meets Cara, he realizes he does not love his hometown sweetheart as much as he thought he did, but falls for Cara.  Although there are some obstacles to a life together, they find a way to work things out.  This is a light, heartwarming read involving balancing one’s responsibilities with the pursuit of happiness. ...more

This is a series set in Ohio and centered on Amish life. This first novel concerns the schoolteacher, Clara Slabaugh, a young woman physically scarred since childhood. The lesson is that beauty is not always found on the outside, but can be hidden under layers. Clara has a demanding mother, but still she remains kind and optimistic. Lilly has just suffered a miscarriage from an unwanted pregnancy and wants to hide from the world. Each person carries unwanted burdens, but with God's assistance th ...more

An interesting story line with a good ending. Looking forward to the next book although I'm surprised that it does not involve the summer season.

My one major complaint (that has two parts) - with this book - involves one of the secondary characters. First off, the character Ruby is called Ruby Lynn for the first half or so of the book when she is mentioned. However, as soon as she becomes an active character, she is called Ruby Lee. Secondly, every bit of dialogue and facial expression that Ruby

This is another heart warming tale in the Sugarcreek series. The Amish and the Englishers that live in the community seem to mesh well with each other. This one is about the Amish school teacher who was scarred as a child by a hot oil. She believes that she will never find true love due to her deformities. Other characters from the first novel are still in this book.

Warning: You will need some tissues when reading this book. Now to read the 3rd installment. I have already read the back cover.

I have really enjoyed the books so far in the Seasons of Sugarcreek Series. I really enjoyed the character Clara in this story because she had a truly beautiful spirit. She had suffered a tragedy when she was younger and had some very bad burns. She felt that no man would ever want her because of them. She resigned herself to be the best teacher she could be and love did find her. I like this series because so far Shelley Shephard Gray has shown us 2 characters that had some physical issues that ...more

Spring's Renewal is waaaay better than the first book, Winter's Awakening! I read it through in one day. I'm really looking forward to Autumn's Promise which will once again feature "Englischer" Lilly Allen. I think this is the first series in a while that I've really enjoyed that has featured the same main character throughout while also introducing a new main character in each book! If you like Amish fiction (I really don't care for it much anymore but I liked this book) pick this series up.

I continue to enjoy Shelley Shepard Gray's novels about the Amish. These stories are set in present time and always involve Amish and English characters. This story brings the Amish schoolteacher with a love for children and the scars of her past. It also brings a new Amish cousin to the Graber family from the first book. Again, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the combination of familiar characters from the first book and new ones.

Clara has scars from burns on her face and parts of the side of her body from when she was a child. She is looked at for her outward appearance, that is until she meets Tim who is out to help his uncle's farm. The only problem is that Tim has a sweetheart back home.

This was an Amish story and it was cute. Predictable as usual, but sweet, and sometimes sad too.
I liked this second book and the small view we had of the characters from the first book too. That was cool.

Absolutely loved this book. An Amish girl burned and scared as a young child, now grown but scared in other ways, begins to find healing of those emotional scars. A very touching story that shows the power of love and forgiveness. I cannot wait to begin reading the next book in the series. I am falling in love with the characters in Sugarcreek. I already know that I love this author and her books

I found this book hard to put down. It got pretty intense in some parts, and I really wanted to see what happened next! I like that the book included snippets of what happened in the first book, as I read that more than a year ago and had forgotten a lot of what went on.
I really liked Clara. She faces her challenges the way I strive to: with a cheerful and grateful heart. :)

Jumping in in the middle of another series, but it didn't make any difference. This is another amish book. I enjoy these for their simplicity and there's always some sort of romance and finding oneself mixed in with the story line.

I loved Clara. I think there is much of her inside all of us and we'd be oh so much more at ease with ourselves if we only took the time to listen. Thank you Shelley for more time with the Graber and Allen families. I can't wait to start "Autumn's Promise."
