Oh, I absolutely hate giving 3-stars to Kevin Lewis! He is an exceptional author. We own My Truck is Stuck and Runaway Pumpkin, my two favorite books to read to my 5-year old twin girls. Great voice! We've also read all his other books and have enjoyed his talent.
Not Inside This House had great illustrations, lots of fun detail and beautiful color palette. BUT, the text just didn't grab me. I liked the idea of the story, but in some places, the rhyming seemed forced.

This is a rhyming picture book that would be best suited for third graders. It tells a story about how a curious you boy kept bringing animals into the house. First it started with a bug, and then a mouse, and ended with another bug. Each time he brought a friend into the house, the mother said to get them out of the house. However, at the end of the story, the mother allowed him to keep the lady bug that he brought back home with him. One thing that I found interesting about this book was that...more
I really enjoyed this book! Its a cute story about a young boy who does not like toys, gadgets, or video games; instead he would much rather play with animals and explore the world around him. He begins by bringing home bugs and his mother is furious. She calls him by his long name, Livingstone Columbus Magellan Crouse (which were all famous names of explorers). Later he brings home a mouse, a pig, a moose, an elephant, and a whale. His mother continuously disapproves. Finally he brings home a b...more
Livingstone Columbus Magellan Crouse brings home a bug, but his mother orders him to take the bug out of the house. Livingstone goes outside and, in rapid succession, attempts to bring in the house a mouse, a pig, a moose, an elephant, and a whale, all of which his mother refuses to allow inside. After the whale, his mother’s resolve to allow no animals in the house is weakened and she allows her son to bring a bug into the house.

This picture book filled with cartoony illustrations and bright end papers follows a little boy named Livingstone Columbus Magellan Crouse. With a name like that, it is no surprise that Livingstone likes to explore his neighborhood. He also brings home specimens from his “travels”, which his mother does not appreciate. Livingstone brings in some bugs, to which his mother responds “Not inside this house!”. The story escalates as he brings in larger and larger animals, and finally, after the eleph...more
In rhyming text an adventurous boy with an apt name for an explorer--Livingstone Columbus Magellan Crouse--is disinterested in the toys in his room and heads off on a series of outdoor adventures. Each time he returns home, he brings something with him, starting with a bug and gradually increases the stakes so that he hauls home a whale. His poor mother keeps remonstrating with him and insisting that he remove the creatures. But maybe a tiny ladybug isn't all that bothersome when you consider ev...more
I really enjoyed this book and it was one that I'm sure children will definitively enjoy because of how silly it is. But it can be used to teach children that certain animals aren't meant to be used as pets. Another reason I liked this book was the ABAB rhyming pattern of it, a lot of books are just straightforward with reading, I personally like when a book rhymes because it can underhandedly help to teach rhyming and patterns to children without them even knowing.

Livingstone Columbus Magellan Crouse is like many young boys, he's curious, and in search of the perfect thing to bring home from his various adventures. From a moose, to a whale, to a pig, to bugs and everything in between. Livingstone can't help himself. His poor mom sure has an awful mess to clean up each time he brings something home.

This is a fun story about the most curious of boys. He is quite defiant of his mother's declaration that he could not bring creatures into the house. The narrative is fun and rhyming and the illustrations are hilarious. I was a little frustrated that there seemed to be little supervision or discipline of the boy, but it is, after all, just a book. We enjoyed reading this story together and we discussed a bit about the provenance of his name (sounds like his mother asked for an adventuresome chil...more
My sympathies are totally with young Livingstone here. His mom gets more and more wound up, but she's not playing fair. She said, "No bugs." If he brings home a mouse instead, she can't say, "I told you not to bring mice home." If she can't say what she means, I say more power to Livingstone! It's a little thing, but it made the whole book feel like it wasn't in sync.
Plus the rhymes are a little forced, though the illustrations are charming.

Livingstone Columbus Magellan Crouse makes valiant attempts at making his exotic animal friends his household pets, but his mother's battle cry is, "Not Inside This House!" The star of this cute picture book are the lovely illustrations that have an old fashion flair to them, and the repetitive rhymes are enjoyable for young children. Recommended for students ages 4 and up.
An animated, humorous and entertaining book. I read this book to a family of three, one toddler and two younger elementary aged students. The children enjoyed the illustrations. All of us wondered and laughed about just how "Livingstone Columbus Magellan Crouse" could have possibly fit these discoveries into his home!
I agree with other reviewers: Mom is not playing fair! All she said was no bugs. She didn't mention anything about mice, pigs, moose, elephants or whales! Geez.
Knowing the kind of kid my husband was and the kind of man he is now, I'm fully expecting children who closely resemble Livingston Columbus Magellan Crouse (if not in name), so I'll try to remember to be much more clear about household boundaries. ;)

I'm smiling just thinking about his book.

Even though this book rhymed, which drives my crazy, the illustrations were a lot of fun.
Good out-loud read for storytime.
