As I began this book, I wasn't that into it. Or rather, I *tried* not to be that into it! There was even a part of me that WANTED to dislike it... but it became apparent to me very quickly that this was my own internal RESISTANCE to Gabby's message of love. Something in me KNEW that this book was going to cause my life to change, bigtime, and the fearful part of me did NOT want that change to happen! Thankfully I didn't let the resistance get to me, because this book has brought about huge growt...more

I was prepared to give this book 1 star, but I'm glad I waited to review it after my book club discussed it. I'm familiar with A Course in Miracles (ACIM), and I believe it's message is a good one. Marianne Williamson (who can write) told Gabby to write a book for her generation after Gabby healed from ACIM and Williamson as her mentor. Sadly, if this is what this generation deserves for a book, then I pity them. The message is good - forgive others, eliminate fear which destroys you and your tr...more

Fierce, fabulous, & funny spiritual sage and girl guru Gabrielle Bernstein has a new mantra for the modern generation: “Make shift happen!” Her latest book, Spirit Junkie: A Radical Road to Discovering Self-Love and Miracles, is all about making miracles- and making love- to yourself. In times when we all want something to believe in, Gabrielle gives us something to believe in: ourselves.

“A decade ago, young women like Ms. Bernstein might have been expected to chase the lifestyle of high hee...more

Wow, amazing! I'm using this as a companion to a recovery program I am in, and everything this book teaches coincides beautifully. This book may be life-changing if it comes into your life at just the right time. Anyone seeking spiritual rebirth, recovery options, and the tools to experience life through the happy lenses you haven't worn since childhood should read this book carefully.
I don't want to lend mine to my friends because I know they will want their own (and I would miss mine)!

From the very first page of Spirit Junkie I wanted to reject the book. I found the language a too "Gabbified" with it's "far outs", "trippy's", and pop psychology which assigns the root of all our problems to the "ego", which is quite a different sort of construct to the Freudian notion of that part of ourselves which serves as a mediator between the id and the superego, forming intellectual synthesis. The pragmatist in me found the book irritating, and reminiscent of the floppy "Ashram-think" I...more

Have you ever heard of the book A Course In Miracles (A.C.I.M)? "Spirit Junkie" is a lovely, meaningful, true account of a 30 year old woman's struggle (and then triumph over) addiction by finding A Course In Miracles. Gabrielle lovingly and open-heartedly touches on some of the beautiful 365 lessons in the book (yes, one lesson per day for a year), and shares her thoughts on how you can apply them to your life if you are so moved. (If you are interested in spirituality as opposed to religion,...more

What drew my into this book right from the start was the gorgeous cover. The contrast of the blue and red is an eye catcher for sure.

The first few pages pull the reader right into the turmoil of life as Kacey Cleary.

Kacey is a severely troubled girl with a messed up past trying to start fresh in a new city. Her past closes her off to all forms of love and affection to anyone other than her sister, Livie. Tucker did a great job of writing Kacey as a girl who was genuinely afraid of being hurt o...more

If you've ever wanted someone to explain Marianne Williamson's writings to you using a flippant attitude and valley girl speak, this is your book! The book also serves as a promotional platform for Bernstein's previous title. I never was able to get a solid read on whether Bernstein actually believes what she is saying. A book like this needs to be bolstered by a confident tone from the author.

PS. I got so sick of her overuse of the term "~ing"

In this book, the author explains her experiences in putting the teachings of a book called "A Course In Miracles".
I think if I had read that book, I might understand this one better.
She talks about how she overcomes her negative attitudes in life by putting the concepts in the "Course" book into practice. This includes things like parts of one's being called the "ego" - not the same as the "ego" in psychology, and the ~ing. I never really could understand those things. Perhaps they are defined...more

I will be the first one to admit that I enjoy reading self-improvement books, and that I was very excited to investigate Gabrielle Bernstein's ideas.

I will also admit to being a teensy bit disappointed.

In this book, Bernstein talks about her life changes and experiences as a result of her work in "A Course in Miracles." I think she tried just a bit too hard to be hip and cutesy with her own take on the work, frankly. Referring to her inner guide as ~ing wasn't so bad, but the constant puns (e.g....more

Sometimes, you meet people through books. I believe that stories call to us in a way that is extremely powerful. I have never Gabrielle Bernstein nor do I think that we'll ever meet in person. I'm shy, depressed, anxious, but, on my birthday, I bought her two books: Spirit Junkie and Add More ing To Your Life. I had never heard of her before. I had no idea why I gravitated towards the books.

But now I do: because the Universe (or God, whatever you want to call Him or It; Greatness abounds regard...more

I respect the DC Public Library and the Montgomery County Public Library systems for not purchasing this book. However, I want to read it and by read I mean flip through until my eyes roll around in my head.

This book is complete crap and not even entertaining or funny. Abysmal.

Shelves: self-help
This is exactly what it looks like. I've been cruising the self-help section for a while now, sometimes opting for something subtle and exquisite (i.e., compelling literature as a metaphor for your life, bypassing self-help), sometimes opting for things that just all-out verbalize the nuances & abstractions of the soul, of FEELINGS, just because I'm exhausted and craving something explicit, point-blank. This book is inarguably of the latter set, but that's okay. It's something I'm willing to...more

I really enjoyed the story of Gabrielle's life and how she changed her thinking to better her life. Her journey is exciting.

I wasn't aware that it was going to be half her story and half "how-to" type of self-help book. I could have done with out all of the "how-to" and would have rather been guided by her examples instead.

The meditations and visualizations that you are encouraged to practice isn't something I really agree with.

And I understand that she was trying to make this book for younger w...more

This is a strange book. It's extremely engrossing, but sometimes feels too good to be true. In fact, I often felt like saying, "Where's the MEAT in this book? It's so fluffy!" And yet...I feel it kinda cast a spell of positivity on me and since reading it, I've felt like I've made some big leaps in my ACIM work. Hmmmmm....

Yes, it can be hard sometimes to relate to this chic, young, energetic New Yorker and yet...well, you know. We're all one, etc. etc. Right? ;) So by the time you get to the end...more

When the mind is ready, the right book appears. Such was the case with this book.
I first learned about Gabby through her show on HayHouseRadio.com. Immediately, I was skeptical. I bristle at anyone marketed as "the new ___ for a generation." But, something stuck with me and I kept listening to her. Listening to her eventually lead to me reserving "Spirit Junkie" from my local library. And let me tell you all, when Gabby states that your "~ing" leads you what you need, it's true.

Due to its high...more

I really don't know if I like this book or not!!!! It has some good advice in it and I can relate to some of the author's issues and insecurities.

I just don't feel like Gabby is totally authentic. She can "talk the talk", but can she "walk the walk?" This book is completely based off of "A Course in Miracles" by Marianne Williamson. Spirit Junkie is Gabby's attempt to write a book for a younger generation. She created some new phrases and words that got on my nerves. Example: -Ing (her word for...more

i really loved this book! i read alot of books like this because i love life. and yes there are premises & points that you most likely have heard or read about before- but who doesn't love to hear good advice over and over again! the author is passionate, genuine & sincere. a sign for a good book in my world is if i read it & immediately force someone else to read it. the ultimate sign of a good book in my world is also when I order it for them on amazon and have it shipped to them u...more

I started the book in an airport bookstore, passed it up & checked out several of Marianne Williamson's books from the library instead (she wrote the intro to Spirit Junkie & was the author's inspiration). I believe those books have helped me set a whole new course for life, that's how fabulous they re. Then I came back to Spirit Junkie and it did not disappoint. Loved the youthful approach and the personal stories, one is especially inspirational for me, many many relatable parts, at ti...more

This book is based on the principles and teachings of another book - A Course In Miracles. It doesn't matter at all if you haven't read it, in fact it would have helped me understand ACIM better if I'd read this one first.

I saw someone mention this book on facebook and before I knew it, I'd ordered it on Amazon. I consider myself a Spirit Junkie, so I couldn't resist it. When the book arrived, I must admit, I was put off by the cover, it seemed to shout 'this book is for young people'. But I put...more

I came to this book as result of hearing the author speak on TEDx. She's a young life coach and student of Marianne Williamson (A Course in Miracles). She brings Williamson's message to a younger generation and simplifies what can be some pretty heady stuff. I could see where some folks might get turned off by Gabrielle's new-agey personality. She's definintely on the funky side. But, if you can roll with the whole pop psychology thing, there's a nice message here. The gist?...how to remove nega...more

Although Gabrielle Bernstein admits this description of her persona l journey to peace and enlightenment is very solidly based on the earlier A Course in Miracles by Marianne Williamson. (Williamson wrote the preface to this book, and quotes from A Course in Miracles are found at the beginnings of each of Bernstein’s chapters are frequently referenced in Bernstein’s text), she still manages a fun and personal touch in this self-help memoir. Bernstein is candid about her own background as a Jewis...more

While this book was written for those in their 20's and 30's and I am a "far cry" from that. With specific references to the Course in Miracles, Gabby journaled her spiritual awakening as she studined her way through the course. Gabby is honest in her journey with examples of her slip and falls, her questioning but always with her re-alignment with Spirit. Her honesty in her book is to commended.

The latest of Gabrielle's books was written much more eloquently than her first, Add More -Ing To Your Life. The last chapter was particularly compelling, as she reminds us that all that we need is within ourselves to grow spiritually. Enjoyed the practical application of abstract spiritual concepts in today's world. Would recommend for younger generations seeking spiritual growth.

I struggled while reading the first half of this book. I would pick it up every once in a while and read a few pages. My daughter suggested this book and I wanted to like it but it just didn't grab me.....until yesterday.

Yesterday I decided it was time to finish some of those books I had started and set aside. It is not unusual for me to have 3 or more books going at the same time so it was just blind luck that I decided to clean house by finishing this one.

The second half of this book was fill...more

I love Gabby! I really enjoyed Gabby's "May Cause Miracles" and thought I should try her other books... I like Spirit Junkie, but I liked the concept of the 40 day study of May Cause Miracles better. Spirit Junkie takes you chapter by chapter as opposed to day by day. Much of the same material is covered, there are new meditations and journal writing though...
Elisabeth
Felt like the instruction and words in the book were an echo of amazing things I used to know and think were normal in my former, happier life. Inspired me to reconnect with an old friend. Makes me want to read A Course In Miracles as much of the text relies on it. I will be reading more of her work.

i am not sure about the cover of this book, and i'm not sure about the term 'self-love' either, but i like a book that quotes someone called Rha Goddess who says 'Let the world show up for the party that is you'.
i also quite like 'would you rather be right or be happy?' and 'the lack you see in others creates more lack in you'.
Jenny
I am really glad I read this book. The author does a great job showing readers how we repress success and prevent accomplishment in our own lives via our negative self-talk, and how we devastate relationships the same way.

Her formula for success is simple, but does require an entire book to pound it into our overly negative minds (thanks to cultural conditioning via the media and all the less successful types who drag us down with their negative talk). I found myself coping a lot better with wo...more
