Whaoo.... a new Paasilinna!

Filand in an incredible country. Minister live with bear, buisnessman make love with 10 women in a night, prisonner cultivate mushrooms...It's colorful, Rabelais-like,completely crazy.
This one is a summit. Ariel Auvinen is a clumsy guardian angel. It's impossible to describe the story. It's completely frenzied.
I think it's one of the best medication against nervous breakdown.
I think I will ask political asile to Finland.

Sadly, this book wasn't half as funny as it tried to be. The incidents seemed forced, the characters were barely explored and the author kept jumping from a moment to another in a way that made no sense whatsoever. But what truly bothered me about this book were the countless sexist statements. According to Ariel (and probably the author, since he makes no effort to criticize his main character's thoughts and opinions), women are hysterical, manipulative, obsessed by the idea of finding a ...more

This book was a HUGE disappointment!

First of all, the language was platitudinous and plain boring. Now, this MIGHT have been a translation issue (I read the Norwegian translation), but it can't have been just that. The language is very straight forward, and with absolutely no embelishment at all. There's no emotion in the text, and the result is that the reader doesn't care for any of the characters.

And then there's the humor. I recently watched the new "Vacation" movie, starring Ed Helms. It'

Obviously I loved it, how can you not. Paasilinna is always bringing funny and entertaining novels that still manage to make you reflect on things with their irony.
I won't say that it's my favourite book from him cause I found it a bit slow at times compared to the others or that some characters would have deserved to be a bit more developped but it's still a great concept and story that I loved. I mean, I finished the book quite quickly and was sad to see it come to an end. You really get easil

More a 3.5/5 than a 3/5, but doesn't reach the 4 stars because of a bit of a weak ending.
Anyway, I like the dry soft humor and the simple but elegant storytelling of Paasilinna.
In this book there is a bit of cringe humor, where you think "oh please, don't do it, don't do it..." but then the character does it. Somehow it's okay though.
In the end the book is very light, while still making a point of subtly talking about life, it's meaning, religion and the applying one owns morals to other peop

Absurd and funny. Not as good as ''Kollektivt selvmord'' (maybe it hasn't been translated into English?), but still pretty enjoyable
