Eve Dallas has a grisly double homicide to solve when two young lovers—both employees of the same prestigious accounting firm—are brutally killed on the same night. It doesn't leave Eve a lot of leftover time to put together a baby shower for her buddy Mavis, but that's supposedly what friends are for.

Is the In Death series really up to 23 books? Wow. No wonder it's getting harder for it to have installments that stand out from the crowd. The last few have been more or less "meh", and this one didn't particularly grab me either. It wasn't bad reading--just didn't have any particular substance. The mystery was simple and unsurprising, and I was tired of the subplot of "Eve and Roarke are panicky about Mavis having her baby" a few books ago. (At least the good news is, now they can actually sto...more
"Flying babies. Evil flying babies with evil wings."
Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of this series. I really can't complain much, since this has been my first disappointment after reading over twenty books about Eve Dallas and her husband Roarke. Even though this book was not up to the level I have gotten used to from Robb, towards the end, the author saves the day and the overall experience ends up being OK.

This was a lovely addition to Robb's series and the continuing tale of Eve and Roarke. We've been counting down to the birth of Mavis' baby for a while now and in this book, the big day finally arrives.
Robb manages some lovely humour as Eve and Roarke, neither of which has an experience of functional and happy families, try to come to terms with what it will mean to be Mavis and Leonardo's support people at the birth. Eve finds herself doomed to throw a baby shower, and manages only with Peabody...more

This is the first J.D. Robb book that I read, and I came away largely unimpressed. Set in a futuristic New York City, detective Eve Dallas starts off helping her friend Mavis as a birthing coach, even though she hates the thoughts of delivering a baby. Why she was there made no sense to me, since Mavis's partner was already there. Mavis has Eve investigate the disappearance of her friend, which coincidentally is connected to the murder case she's investigating. In fact, the level of coincidences...more
I am going to recommend this book as THE "...In Death " book to start the series with to all my friends. Yes, I know it's #27 but it's great. Eve Dallas, the person, really shows through in this book. Not just Lt.Eve Dallas as is the case in many of the books in this series. I know there were many times in the earlier books when I'd wonder, "What does he see in her"?, "She's so stiff. So socially incompetent. Why is he still with her" or " Why do people like her?". This book lets us see more of E...more

I was looking at other reviews and found this one right on the nose, so I'm copying it: This is my first "In Death" series by J.D. Robb...and it will be my last. Maybe I made a mistake starting with #23 of the series!? I really enjoy a good murder mystery, and the plot was OK, the only reason I forged on and read the entire book. However, I did not find the characters likeable, and I saw no purpose in setting it in 2060 other than giving the author a chance to use imaginary, futuristic vocabular...more
OK--so I am behind the times to make my first JD Robb book be #23. But it sounded interesting enough... I actually listened to this on CD while doing laundry, cleaning kitchen, etc.
I can't say that I am going to go out and grab another Robb book anytime soon, but the book was amusing. I skipped certain parts and winced through a little language, but as I earlier said, it was amusing even if a bit annoying. Am I to belive that Mavis has been pregnant in several books and this the "finale" of bir...more

I love Eve and Roarke. Who wouldn't? I'm still reading through the series since I only discovered it a year or two ago and make myself take breaks in between so I won't run out of novels and be overwhelmed by sadness. In Born in Death, Eve has a mess of a different kind on her hands. Yes, of course, there's a murder in the form of a soon-to-be married young couple are found murdered, each in his/her own home. But, her best bestie in the world, fantabulous singer and far-out frosty babe Mavis is...more
It's 2060 and Lieutenent Eve Dallas is working on two related homicide cases. Two accountants working for the same company have been found murdered. Eve believes it is tied to an account of the first victim. Eve then takes on a missing person case as a favor to a very pregnant Mavis. Mavis' friend, Tandy, is near her delivery date, and cannot be found.
The homicide cases didn't have didn't have the usual tension J.D. Robb incorporates. Usually, we are given glimpses into the killer's mind while...more

This book deserves five stars for just the scene where Eve is dashing back and forth between two hospital rooms and two women giving birth. The baby shower is a close second. And Roarke and Eve's reactions when two women go into labor in their home is a definite third. All of them are wonderfully funny. I love the way Eve is working two cases at once, going without much needed sleep along with Roarke, while she juggles the two and barely beats out the babies' arrivals with a solution to both cas...more

I loved this book. I gave it five stars based on it being a genre book, so five stars within that genre. Genre books, especially series genre books, have shortcomings. We know Eve Dallas and Rouarke are going to live and that there will be a "happy ending" of sorts and a solving of the crime(s). How this will happen, then, becomes the meat of the book, and this book delivers. It starts out with two separate threads--I was pretty sure they would join together, and knowing that helped me solve the...more

I LOVED this installment. It was funny and touching and suspenseful. The opening scene with Eve and Roarke at Mavis' birthing class had me snorting with laughter. At the class they also meet some other pregnant friends of Mavis' including Tandy who later goes missing, and Eve promises Mavis to find her. Eve juggles the missing persons case with a double homicide of an accountant and her fiance. The mystery story line is suspenseful, but the book gets five stars for the scenes involving the baby...more
This time Eve Dallas has a very busy time. Two young lovers have been found murdered from the same accounting firm. That same accounting firm is making doubly sure that no information regarding their accounts will ever land in the police's hands.
At the same time Eve and Roarke attend the dreaded birthing coach's class and Eve is preparing for the baby shower that she is to give Mavis. Eve doesn't have a clue and Peabody helps her out. But Tandy Willowby, a friend from Mavis' birthing classes has...more

Nora Roberts isn't my favorite author, but these JD Robb books are recommended by a lot of people I know. I didn't hate this, but it took me a long while to get into it. I didn't feel that the futuristic elements of the book added to the appeal. I think that Roberts (Robb) sets her character up with a filthy rich husband to make the story easier to write. Of course she can solve all these crimes when she has a husband with all the resources and time in the world to help her. And even though ther...more
The "born" in "Born in Death" is very appropriate since Eve and Roarke have to attend childbirth classes, Eve needs to host a baby-shower for Mavis, and the little bundle of joy finally arrives. But that's not all. Eve finds herself with a second pregnant mother on her hands, who has mysteriously gone missing.
While missing persons is not Eve's department, and she's already knee deep in a murder case, Mavis begs Eve to personally find her friend Tandy who never showed up for Mavis' baby shower. E...more

A double homicide is tough. Even for the toughest cop in New York, Eve Dallas, but with the right questions, the eyes of a trained cop looking for the smallest link it should be a walk in the park.
Until a friend asks you to do the unthinkable: ask a Homicide cop to look into a Missing Persons case. Any other friend, she would move it to another cop...but when's it's Mavis all ready to be a mother, hormones spiking Dallas just can't say no.
Who would want a woman who is ready to give birth? Who wa...more

If I had not checked this audiobook out of the library to listen to on my commute to work, I probably would have stopped reading it after the first chapter. This would have been a shame, since the mystery is so intriguing. I felt that the main character, Eve Dallas's, reaction to being her best friend, Mavis's, birth coach was way overboard. Eve went on and on too much about her distaste for the whole business, including giving the baby shower.

I enjoyed the read, but not near as much as most of the "In Death" Series. I first came across the "In death" Series, a little over a year ago. Loyalty in Death. I had to find all the previous books, so as I was up to date with the timeline in the series. I found it a totally different read, once I had caught up on all that leads up to it, as I had sort of walked into the middle of the movie, by not reading the precluding books in the series. I have thus far read 14 books in the series, in chron...more
Continuing in my quest to catch up on the J.D. Robb/Eve Dallas series of books, this one was cool. Two young accountants - a couple with the future ahead of them - are murdered. Dallas does what she always does - sets out to find who and why. And the why is where it gets interesting.
In the meantime, Mavis is about to pop, so you get to watch Dallas and Roarke get all freaked out about the birthing classes and then try to deal with their fear of becoming parents because they had such lousy child...more

Book #49 of 2012
These books are very much the formulaic, but one kind of expects that. I enjoy picking them up every now and then and reading a few. In this particular book, I enjoyed Eve and Roarke's panic over the birth of thier friend's baby. Eve's panic I get, but not Roarke's as he has stated several times he wants a family with Eve. Wonder how Roarke thinks that family comes about? But their shared panic was a fun dynamic to read. As for the mystery/homicide part of the book, it was pretty...more

This one is full of action of varied kinds, not all of it related to murder. In fact, the case is solved, the usual suspects rounded up and grilled and there are still about 30 more pages left to read.
Just a side note (and a hint of what awaits you in this book): I find it unrealistic and frankly unbelievable that Eve and Roarke, who are fearless and have not hesitated to risk their lives countless times, are so very terrified by childbirth. True, not everyone chooses to witness it up close and...more

Okay I really enjoyed this. The whole deal with Eve's friend having her baby (and Eve having to throw at baby shower) added some wonderful pressure on the lead characters and the investigations.
Some of the plot twists on the investigations seemed forced, but really it worked as a whole. It was a very entertaining book that I found almost impossible to put down!

Since this is book 27 in this series, you can safely assume I liked it, as I'm still reading these books. Not sure how to find new ways to say "It was awesome" but will make an attempt.
In this book, not only is Eve investigating a double-homicide of two accountants who were engaged to be married, but she and Roarke are also preparing - with mortal and blinding terror! - to be part of Mavis' birthing team as she delivers her impending baby.

This was the first Eve Dallas mystery I have read by J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts). The series is set in the future, although it is not that obvious, other than some advanced technology and references to off-world, so it doesn't seem like an alien culture. Eve Dallas is hardworking Homicide cop, prone to getting so caught up in her cases that she neglects things like eating and sleeping, but her handsome, very rich husband Roarke is there to bring her back to earth when necessary. In this novel, Eve...more
