Is the In Death series really up to 23 books? Wow. No wonder it's getting harder for it to have installments that stand out from the crowd. The last few have been more or less "meh", and this one didn't particularly grab me either. It wasn't bad reading--just didn't have any particular substance. The mystery was simple and unsurprising, and I was tired of the subplot of "Eve and Roarke are panicky about Mavis having her baby" a few books ago. (At least the good news is, now t...more
I was looking at other reviews and found this one right on the nose, so I'm copying it: This is my first "In Death" series by J.D. Robb...and it will be my last. Maybe I made a mistake starting with #23 of the series!? I really enjoy a good murder mystery, and the plot was OK, the only reason I forged on and read the entire book. However, I did not find the characters likeable, and I saw no purpose in setting it in 2060 other than giving the author a chance to use imaginary, futuristi...more
OK--so I am behind the times to make my first JD Robb book be #23. But it sounded interesting enough... I actually listened to this on CD while doing laundry, cleaning kitchen, etc.
I can't say that I am going to go out and grab another Robb book anytime soon, but the book was amusing. I skipped certain parts and winced through a little language, but as I earlier said, it was amusing even if a bit annoying. Am I to belive that Mavis has been pregnant in several books and this the ...more

It's 2060 and Lieutenent Eve Dallas is working on two related homicide cases. Two accountants working for the same company have been found murdered. Eve believes it is tied to an account of the first victim. Eve then takes on a missing person case as a favor to a very pregnant Mavis. Mavis' friend, Tandy, is near her delivery date, and cannot be found.

This book deserves five stars for just the scene where Eve is dashing back and forth between two hospital rooms and two women giving birth. The baby shower is a close second. And Roarke and Eve's reactions when two women go into labor in their home is a definite third. All of them are wonderfully funny. I love the way Eve is working two cases at once, going without much needed sleep along with Roarke, while she juggles the two and barely beats out the babies' arrivals with a solution to both...more

I LOVED this installment. It was funny and touching and suspenseful. The opening scene with Eve and Roarke at Mavis' birthing class had me snorting with laughter. At the class they also meet some other pregnant friends of Mavis' including Tandy who later goes missing, and Eve promises Mavis to find her. Eve juggles the missing persons case with a double homicide of an accountant and her fiance. The mystery story line is suspenseful, but the book gets five stars for the scenes involving the baby ...more
Nora Roberts isn't my favorite author, but these JD Robb books are recommended by a lot of people I know. I didn't hate this, but it took me a long while to get into it. I didn't feel that the futuristic elements of the book added to the appeal. I think that Roberts (Robb) sets her character up with a filthy rich husband to make the story easier to write. Of course she can solve all these crimes when she has a husband with all the resources and time in the world to help her. And even though ...more

The "born" in "Born in Death" is very appropriate since Eve and Roarke have to attend childbirth classes, Eve needs to host a baby-shower for Mavis, and the little bundle of joy finally arrives. But that's not all. Eve finds herself with a second pregnant mother on her hands, who has mysteriously gone missing.
While missing persons is not Eve's department, and she's already knee deep in a murder case, Mavis begs Eve to personally find her friend Tandy who never sho...more

ahahaha, oh nora roberts, why do I still read your books? Because sometimes I just feel like a popcorn mystery. And I yawn through the Roarke/Eve sex scenes. Well, mostly I skip them. Boring!
Don't know J. D. Robb or Nora Roberts ??? whatever she looks good... enough of that....

Natalie Copperfield, a conscientious, young accountant, is found beaten and strangled in her apartment, apparently as a result of discovering suspicious financial activity within the high profile firm with which she's employed. Her boyfriend who works for the same accounting firm, is found murdered by the same method in his apartment, having been killed shortly after his girlfriend. Lt. Eve Dallas begins investigating into the two murders while also preparing for and anticipating the birth of Ma...more
This is the funniest book at In Death series, where you can see both Eve and Roarke almost vomit when see birthing scene. Wonder, maybe because of this, beside both have hard and difficult past, they' re not ready to have child? Perhaps.
So, Mavis Freestone, Eve's BFF forever (Mavis's term, not Eve) will give birth, and both Eve and Roarke act as her birth class partner, with Mavis's big lover, Leonardo, of course (who she called moonpie.. Err, whatever). Not just almost faint when se...more

I have never, ever before had to stop reading (listening to) a book to find a tissue because I was laughing so much that the tears were rolling and the nose was doing its thing.
This is a valid murder mystery. There are creepy bad guys in it. Neither of those things were funny - but the side story regarding baby showers and other prenatal events just sent me over the edge.

This is the 27th book in the In Death Series.
This story begins with Eve and Roarke at birthing class with Mavis and Leonardo. It is the funniest first chapter ever. At this class they meet Tandy, a single mother to be from London. Mavis and Leonardo have befriended her and are to be her birthing coaches.
Dallas catches a double homicide of an accountant and her fiance. All signs point to her finding something off at work.

The "...IN DEATH" series, without a doubt, is one of the best. The perfect mix of mystery, psychological thriller, and romance, each book in this series always offers up a reading delight.
Once again, Eve Dallas is faced with solving a horrific crime. This time, as often happens with Dallas, the death of a young account executive and her financial manager fiance brings her own strong emotions into the mix. Since she's already dealing with the imminent arrival of Mavis's bab...more

I sort of agree with some of the reviews I've read elsewhere. Sure, the book wasn't as exciting, the plot not as thick as previous books, but I think Eve and Roarke needed to work some things out more personally than the usual norm that we've read. I really liked the ending, how Eve's past still manages to catch up with her - and how she can push it back, push it away. She was there for the best friend that needed her there, wanted her there, and I think with both, Eve and Roarke in that room wi...more

Lieutenant Eve Dallas has a full agenda in Born in Death by J. D. Robb. In addition to solving the latest double murder case, she's in the midst of organizing a baby shower for best friend Mavis, who is taking the prospect of motherhood to new levels. Cutesy baby boutiques and birthing classes aren't exactly Eve's forte, but she'll endure them for the sake of friendship. And husband Roarke will have to endure them with her.

This is the 23rd book in the In Death series.
A young woman and her fiance are killed in what is obviously an assassination. Eve can't find a reason why two, young, bright people would be targeted for an obvious contract kill. Both worked in a venerable financial management firm and eve eventually concludes that the two had stumbled across something in the course of their work that gets them killed.
In the meantime, Mavis' baby is due any day. Even and Roarke are her bac...more

The first I have read of these since futuristic isn't usually of interest to me but its completely incidental to this story so I plan to try a few others. I liked the main characters of Eve and Roarke, the relationship rings true as does their relationships with the other characters. I particulary liked Eve's character - strong, smart, no bs but also cares about her friends and her job. She is easy to visualise.

If I didn't have friends who have kept up with and love the whole series, I would almost swear that Born in Death would be the "jumping the shark" moment for the In Death series. The whole final chapter with two women giving birth at the same time, one getting married and one getting engaged in the midst of that, both of them naming their children in honor of Eve...ugh. It was just way too hokey. This book might go down as my least favorite in the series.
An Okay Read.
I have enjoyed most of J.D.Robb's mysteries, but I was a bit disappointed in this novel.
I did enjoy Mavis and the birth of her child. I thought the scene had a humorous touch which was refreshing. I thought the plot for the most part was weak. Some parts held my attention, but overall I thought it could have been developed better. I'll probably buy Nora's next novel with a view towards it being a better than "Born in Death". I hope so.

I’m not a fan of blood & gore nor of explicit sex, but there’s an amusing few pp at the beginning describing a natural childbirth training film. For Eve, the homicide detective “Bloody & brutal murder was nothing compared to giving birth”. She & her husband seem to share the negative feeling about having kids until the end when neither seems as sure.
This time around two good, young people are dead because they know something but what? Eve’s best pal Mavis is very near the due date of her pregnancy and Eve is on Baby Shower duty and not enjoying any of it. Peabody to the rescue! And Tandy, Mavis’ new friend is missing and they whole thing comes together in a wind-ding mystery. Yummy stuff.
I did not know J.D. Robb was, one a female author and two, Nora Roberts. This book was given to me and I have to say, I will be reading every one of the "In Death" series. Love how it is in the future. Robb uses humans, droids and real life problems/experiences. I have told everyone that J.D. Robb is a must read and you are missing out if you haven't yet!
This is the book in which Robb's humor works best, in my opinion. Eve and Rourke have been pressured into being birth coaches to Eve's friend Mavis, so that suddenly they are surrounded with pregnant women and worse. Eve would rather deal with a dead body any day, except that one of those bodies is likely to be Mavis's kidnapped friend Tandy.
This is the 23rd book in a series set 50 years in the future, and the first one of the series that i've read. i liked it. the main character, eve dallas, is a homicide detective, and she's always going on about how icky girlie things are lol. she reminded me of me sometimes. actually, i liked all of the characters. its rare that i like all of the characters in a book...so i'm going to start at the beginning and read this series. check it out!
