In book #1, Rise of the Darklings, Emily discovered that fairies, piskies, giants and all kinds of creatures actually do exist, it’s just that most people can’t see them. Emily discovers she CAN see them the day she saves a piskie after a battle that takes place in the middle of a London street.
In this second adventure an approaching war between fairy world factions could result in the return of the Fire King, an event that will destroy our world as we know it, including all of the humans in it....more

This is book 2 and it does stand alone. I wish I had read the first book. They do talk about things that had happened in it. But I followed everything alright. I read the Fire King and could not put it down till I finshed reading it. I liked it and good see the the great fire of London in fact I went and looked it up on the internet.

What with all of the descriptive action at one point during a long escape/fight scene I remember thinking, "this is a male author, isn't it?" and I began to wonder how Cornelia Funke may have handled it... not serious pondering of course, and no disrespect to this author.
I was a bit bored by the end. Perhaps I've been reading too many kids books.
Sooo... as far a young readers go... I would have loved this series when I was a kid! Fun story idea, the first book I pretty-much enjoyed with the se...more

The Fire King is book two of the Invisible Order series by Paul Crilley. I received an advance review copy from the publisher through Netgalley.com. Although I have not yet read Book One of the Invisible Order, I found myself thoroughly immersed in the adventure and magic of The Fire King’s storyline. I particularly enjoyed the way in which Crilley tied the storyline to the historical Great Fire of London and the subtle parallels to the four horsemen mentioned in the book of Revelation. While no...more
I absolutely loved the first book in this series, Rise of the Darklings, and was very excited to read this book. I got an advanced reading copy of this book through NetGalley.com. The Fire King is the second book in a planned trilogy. This was a wonderful read and you learn more about the Invisible Order's past and what will have to be done to save London. It can be read as a stand alone, but the first book does provide good background for this book and if you skipped you might be a little confu...more
I enjoyed this sequel less than the first one in the series. The anachronisms seemed more jarring for a 17th century setting than for a 19th century. I doubt people complained of having a heart attack in the 1600s. Also, how does someone who has been in stasis for 1000 years know his way around London? It must look completely different. Many of the plot elements left open in book one are resolved and various hints and events explained. Not all, however. What about Emily and William's parents, sh...more
Classic legends and fairy tale stuff with Jenny Green Teeth, Puck, The Morrigan etc. There are mostly bad Fey and they want to take over London and kill or enslave the humans. The 1st book is set in 18th century and then in the 2nd book they are transported back to London 1666. Dark fantasy/adventure for 9 and up.
Still love this series and I can't wait to see how it turns out! So many good twists and turns. I just wish they'd include maps of London in each of the times and details about the real historical events that are the backdrop of the stories (the Great Fire in this case). You'd think the author would want to share all that research!
