Morpurgon draamantaju ulottuu helppolukuisiinkin, vaikka sisällissotia ei Käärmeissä ja tikapuissa käydäkään. Tai no, kaksi perhettä, jossa toinen vanhempi "on jättänyt meidät", on köyhää ja kurjaa ja kiusaamista ja ilkeitä juttuja ja ei naurata ja lonkkaleikkaus ja komplikaatioita.

Käärme on hieno, mutta tarinan vähempikin olivertwistaaminen olisi riittänyt.

Käärmeitä ja tikapuita.

Nelli on hieman arempi tyttö, jota kiusataan koulussa. Hänen paras ystävänsä on ukin käärme Luikero, joka aiheuttaa hämmennystä koulun joulujuhlassa. Samalla selviää, miksi Sami on aina niin ilkeä Nellille ja piikittelee tätä siitä, että Nellin isä ei asu heidän kanssaan.
