This could have been a much better story if the author hadn't painted herself into a corner with some cheesy instant solutions to plot flaws. The story between the merman, Jaran, and the fisherman, Kellen, was sweet. The author did do an excellent job of showing environmental issues caused by man. I was disappointed by what started off as a good love story.

With its almost classic pairing of a merman and a human, this could have been a nice enough fairytale, but it fell completely short for me due to its plot flaws. They kept ripping me out of the story right from the moment when Jaran took off his magical ring and, just like this, was human again. Completely with magically appearing clothes. I thought “Huh?” and then, “Well, okay, this is fantasy,” and read on. But things like this kept popping up, the more the further I got in the story, and towa ...more

Deja Dei
I won't rate anything less than 3 stars, unless its Twilight or something, cause I think that's nasty, but I have to be honest. This book had some major flaws. Some things are well done. Kellan and Jaran are fine as characters, and I liked the setting of the Florida keys with its beautiful beaches. I liked the dolphins and sea creatures and how they could interact with Jaran. The underwater scenes are beautiful. It also had a kind of environmentalist message, which is interesting in a fantasy ro ...more

This was the first published merman story I’ve ever read and I have mixed feelings about it. The characters were likeable enough, if a wee bit forgettable and the reason for Jaran and Kellan being able to stay together at the end was rather anticlimactic. The sex in mer form was extremely confusing too. There seemed to be a lot of tail flipping, eel-like cocks and contortionism going on which I tried rereading but still couldn’t figure out. It wasn’t explained well at all. There were other incon ...more

4 cuz I'm in the mood for some merman sex.

Hmm...there are a couple of niggles here and there, but merman sex. What can I say?

Overall plot: prolly more of a 2.5
Realism (ignoring the merman): ehh...3?
World creation: 3.5
Characterization/development: 3-3.5

Ending rather bothered me.

It's interesting to see an author take the mammal-mermaid route, though, so kudos for taking the chance. But then's not like fish have actual penises...

All I have to say is that the book was just too unrealistic.
