I liked the format of brief descriptions of 100 films that the author considers essential if not necessarily the "100 best". And I was surprised by how many of these I had never heard of before. Highly recommended.

Pretty good survey. One can quibble: too many obscure early films, way too many british films. Still it makes you want to seek out silent films on the web & DVD. What better praise can there be?
