In elementary school most kids are assigned a pen pal from another city, state, or country, but the boy in this book is very unhappy to learn his pen pal is Clunk, an alien from the planet Quazar. The boy sends a series of disgusting packages, hoping that a pile of dirty socks or his big sister will stop Clunk from being his pen pal. Clunk replies with equally repulsive packages until one day when the boy receives nothing and is surprised to find that he actually misses the packages from his int...more

Have you ever wished that you could send your big sister to your pen pal on another planet? Oh wait, I am a big sister...pretend I didn't say that!

In this book a boy does not want to have to write to a pen pal on the planet Quazar. He wants his pen pal to not like him so he won't have to send any more pen pal letters. So he sends his big sister in a package. Then Clunk (the pen pal from Quazar) sends the boy a package. Then back and forth it goes. The boy keeps sending things that he thinks will...more

One of my favorite picture books! Since the very beginning, I could not help but laugh. His reaction to his teacher's direction of writing to his new pen pal from the Planet Quazar prompted me to wonder what he was going to do to "get out of it" . He sent Clunk packages that were less than pleasant, like his big sister and dirty socks. Clunk, on the other hand, sends him interesting things from his planet, like a fuzzy Zoid and smelly Folps. Mom finally realizes that the sister is missing, so he...more

I first heard this read to a group of second grade students in a library and they voted for it as a book for a state book award. The story deals with pen pals from another planet. The young boy in the story is asked to write a letter to a pen pal on another planet and he doesn't like this idea at all. The letter trades and packages back and forth to Quasar are hilarious. The names are funny and the items sent back and forth are very creative. All the senses are involved in each package that arri...more

Fun. I was a little disappointed that the boy wasn't excited about having an alien for a pen pal. But I enjoyed seeing the things he sent to try and dissuade the writing relationship. And happy to see him eventually like his pen pal and the stuff he received. I love the humor of an alien pen pal being such a normal thing--especially the adults' reactions. This will be a great read for any siblings who wish they could send away their annoying siblings once in a while. Would be a fun school-age st...more

A boy is assigned a pen pal...an alien named Clunk from the Planet Quazar. He doesn't want a pen pal so he sends Clunk all kinds of disgusting things like dirty socks, old lasagna and his big sister. In return he gets a lot of alien things. Finally he decides he likes having a pen pal and asks Clunk to a sleepover.

This is a fun, entertaining read. I loved the illustrations of all the things that got sent back and forth. I liked the grumpiness of the boy and the playfulness of Clunk. Definitely...more

Early Literacy Skills: Print Motivation, Narrative Skills

From cover:
What do bossy big sisters, dirty socks, and old lasagna have in common?
They're all things you send to your alien pen pal Clunk to make it clear you do NOT want an alien pen pal. But when Clunk fires back with an annoying Zoid, three smelly Forps, and a weird (but tasty!) glob, well, you may have met your match!

Childlike illustrations bring to life this humorous friendship story.

My kids asked me to read this book to them several times a day for the three week period that we had it from the library. It was extremely clever and enjoyable to read for adults, so I didn't mind the repetition of reading it so often.

There was the use of the word "stupid," if I recall, and as that word is a swear word between siblings at our house, we substituted it for the more innocuous "silly." A great, charming read, especially for the 4-6 year-old group.

Deadpan humor indeed. A kid, especially a boy, might find this a funny story with all the gross things the boy exchanges with his alien pen-pal, Clunk. I like that it encourages the exchange of both gifts and the written word. I think writing and sending letters is a lost part of our culture. The ending was however a bit abrupt. A real cliff hanger. I personally would have loved to see how Clunk used all of his Earth gifts, we know how his gifts were needed and used.

A funny story about pen pals. What a fun fresh story! A little boy has a pen pal from space and they send each other some of the things that hate most about their respective planets so they don't have to be pen pals anymore. This would be an excellent read aloud especially for the early elementary school grades. Sooooo funny! Kids will love it! And any adult that shares this book with a child will enjoy all of the repeated readings too :)

Best for school-age picture book audiences. I would give it more stars for being funny and original and surprising and a great blending of text and illustrations, BUT it is awfully hard on the big sister (and inexplicably so - hating her is just a given; we don't see her bossing the boy around to cause his feelings; we only see her being pushed around and sad. It gave me the creeps, actually.) But other than that, it was awesome.

This book won the 2012 Wanda Gag Award for best read aloud for younger readers. My library had not ordered it so I borrowed it from another library and I absolutely loved it. It's a great story for young and older listeners. This one I know the parents at my Toddler Story Class really enjoyed too! I wasn't sure if it would work for 2s and 3s but it did!

A kid is assigned to be pen pals with Clunk, an alien from the planet Clunk. As a teacher, I would like this book better if it actually included postcards from Clunk and the kid; instead, it includes just a funny storyline. Possibility for student assignment?

A boy who doesn't want to do his schoolwork, an alien pen pal,and an unusual exchange of gifts between the two (including the boy sending his sister to outer space). This one will keep you laughing as you turn the pages to see what's next sent.

I might have marked this just a 4 but I laughed too much through this. So I bumped it up to a 5. The quirky and fun illustrations matched perfectly with the text. Loved that he mailed his sister to an alien in outer space.

This was a great picture book, nominated for 2012-13 Utah Beehive Book Award. Fun story with cute illustrations and a main character who changes his mind about his "pen pal" from outer space as the book progresses.

When a book promises A CRAZY SURPRISE ENDING, it had better be pretty impressive. Otherwise, you're just shooting yourself (and your reader) in the foot. OK book; I loved the Zoid.
Cathy Blackler
A wonderfully funny story about a reluctant writer and a pen pal who is out of this world. Kids with siblings will love what happens to the big sister. A great marriage of artwork and text.
Paula
The main character in this funny picture book has to write to a pen pal but his is from another planet. He sends him the worst things like his sister. Funny great for story time
Elizabeth
Cute, creative. Not a fan of the sister/brother relationship and the antagonism there or the tone/attitude of the boy, tho he does come around in the end with Clunk.

i want to read it but it dosentEarth to Clunk

This is a cute book. I like the pen pal theme and the pen pal being from another planet. The end seemed to have kept you hanging.. not much of an end.
Melissa
This is fun, and kids will enjoy it. I liked the basement being filled with inter-space-delivery-pods. But really, if you're going for far-out and unpredictable, go for it. This seemed a little restrained & random. I was curious as to what Clunk was doing with all the items he got.

Having a pen pal can turn into a fun thing. Even if you don't ship your big sister to them.
Anne
Funny picturebook. It would make a great storytime book for K-2 paired with "Library Mouse" for a storytime about writing.
Beth
What happens when you're forced to have an alien as a pen pal? You send each other things you don't like about your own planet in an attempt to get rid of it (including your big sister).

What an adorable, feel-good picture book that would put a smile on the face of any cranky-pants.
Christine
Fun story, fun illustrations. What I liked best about this one was the part the big sister played. Love her face!

possible Beehive nominee - I say maybe
It's kind of dumb but really funny. I'm surprised that I really liked it.

A fun book about a boy who does not want a pen pal from another planet so sends him all the things he dislikes.
