This was an interesting book but I did have issue with the premise. This woman, Sarah, gets a phone call from the State Department saying that her newlywed husband (2 months) was dead in Berlin. She gets a phone call saying -- "I need you come to me". So she ups and buys a transatlantic ticket to go to where her husband should have been ... London. So she doesn't know ... is he dead or is he alive? Then Nick, from the State Department, comes swooping in to either save the day or slam her butt in...more
Gimana rasanya, jika suatu malam seorang staf kedutaan menelpon dan mengabari bahwa suami yang kita cintai, tewas dalam suatu kebakaran ? Rasanya dunia hancur ! Kehilangan seseorang yang kita cintai, apalagi rumah tangga baru dibina selama 2 bulan, tentunya ranjang pengantin masih hangat-hangatnya, suasana bulan madu masih terasa, tapi kini yang ada hanya kekosongan…

Ja - it was alright. Vaguely thrilling and exciting at times.
what was unusual for me inmy expereince of Gerritsen was that there was a love story thrown into the mix. I am not sure how well scary murderers chasing innocents gels with people falling in lust and fantasising about moonlit sex
not when its the same people
the basic story is about a woman whose husband dies and then she finds out he is not all he said he was. and maybe he is actually not dead. and maybe he never loved her. or maybe he...more

I didn't get very far with this book as it is, quite frankly, the most sloppily written load of old tosh I have ever wasted my time on.
Informing a woman of her husband's death by telephone? Ordering her to attend an interview the following morning? Cobblestoned London streets? 'Serving girls' in London pubs? I suppose one should feel grateful she stopped short of using the word 'wench'! To say nothing of the first flowers of early spring jostling along with cottage gardens rioting with cornflow...more

In Call After Midnight, Tess Gerritsen let the readers find out (or should I say 'confuses' the readers) whether Geoffrey Fontaine is actually dead or alive. The story starts with a phone call where Sarah Fontaine, the main protagonist, was called by Nicholas O'Hara, a policeman from the US State Department, to say that Geoffrey Fontaine, her husband, has died in a hotel fire in Berlin. Events then lead on from there and even though Sarah still believes that her husband is still alive, everyone...more
Having read some of Gerritsen's recent novels, I picked up this unabridged audiobook from the library for a road trip.
The suspense/thriller part of the plot was good, as I expected, but I was confused by what seemed to be anachronisms: referring to the "KGB" and "East Germany", using pay phones not cell phones. The pseudo-soft-core "romantic" scenes were just plain annoying. Looking the book up on Amazon I found that Call after Midnight was originally published as a Harlequin novel in 1987! -- m...more

That was my second Tess Gerritsen novel, but I must say, that the first one was so much better. Call After Midnight is one of her first novel and unfortunately we can see that in the book. The intrigue and plot is not so bad itself, but characters and their love to each other is unbelievable. So after your husband die, you see another men twice - one at his office and later at the funeral and you already have feeling for him? i don't think so. Still, it's a very fast read, great when you are tra...more
Sarah Fontaine was a devoted worker in her career of choice, and when she received a phone call in the middle of the night, telling her that her husband of two months, Geoffrey, was dead, and his body was found in a seedy hotel in Berlin, she was shocked and astounded, but most of all she was confused. Geoffrey had been in London, what was he doing in Berlin…and why was the US State Department calling with the news? Nick O’Hara, the State Department’s representative, wanted to see her the follow...more
This is not part of the Rizzoli and Isles series, but is one of Gerritsen's stand-alone books. I have to say I was not particularly impressed. This is a fairly standard spy thriller with obligatory romantic sub-plot and, really, not up to Gerritsen's usual standard. It's a fun, quick read that is fairly well written and doesn't require much brain power and that's about the best that can be said about it.
I had to abandon this one because it annoyed me thoroughly. It started off as a passable thriller about a woman who is told her husband has died in mysterious circumstances and it would appear he is a spy. She gets a strange phonecall from her dead husband and sets off to try and track him down. This is where I stopped as I couldn't take any more. The heroine is not interesting and on the day she's burying her 'husband' she's fantasising about the eye candy from the consulate! It gets worse as t...more
The first book I read from Tess Gerritsen outside her famous Rizzoli & Isles series, which I love. I was really disappointed - I guess I expected something fast moving, informative and too hard to put down but with this one I had to motivate myself to actually pick it up and continue reading. Yes great plot and good characters but the romance between Nick and Sarah was "cheesy" and to much Mills&Boons for my liking.
Bog standard thriller fare, to be honest. You know what's coming. High up do-goode professional ends up suspended/out of work but keeps going with the case. Falls for the heroine (if you can call her that). GErritsen writes these things well, so it's an enjoyable enough page-turner, just don't expect great literature within it's covers and you'll be fine.
I am on a Gerritson roll! A meek woman didn't realise that she has married a spy and when she is told he has died, she sets about trying to find him, along with Nick O'Hara from the State Dept (whatever that is). Full of twists and turns and plenty of exciting action like the chase across the rooftops of Amsterdam. Just right for a Naseby summer :)
Good story of a quiet woman who goes into action when her husband has been alledgedly killed in Europe. Lots of mystery surrounds his death, but she is calm as she moved through the process of finding the truth. "Courage surfaced only when it was needed, when one was forced to meet one's darkest terrors." I consider it a success story.

Sarah Fontaine is woken up by a ringing phone in the night which is never a good thing. She is informed that her husband has been killed in Berlin. What was he doing in Berlin when he was supposed to be in London? Sarah and Nick O'Hara from the State Sept start on a journey to see if they can find out the truth.
Pretty bland but quick read book. I probably wont be reading any earlier works by Gerritsen again though. I didn't hate it nor love it. There was however a bit too much lovey dovey kiss kiss! Would only recommend it to people who love their Mills and Boons romances with a bit of espionage thrown in for good measure!
This was a little different for Tess Gerritsen. It still had all the suspense of her previous novels, but it also felt very much like a romance. It was a good read that kept me reading and wanting to find out what happens. I liked it.
I agree with the others that this was not one of her best books. There is a lot of action and some novel situations, but she doesn't develop the characters as well in this book. Still, it was easy enough to stick with to the end.
I really hated this book and am annoyed at myself for wasting the time to finish it! The plot was terrible and the character development really dreadful. I couldn't care less what happened to them and in fact towards the end of the book was hoping something bad would! I have read some of her other books and enjoyed them so was very disappointed. A total waste of good reading time!

Short and sweet. An action-packed thriller with a cleverly constructed espionage plot that I felt was only hindered by an unrealistic and contrived romance between the two main characters.

Zwakke plot. Gaf de illusie van een thriller, maar had weinig om het lijf. Bouquet-romanachtige passages waren overbodig. Boek gaat niet terug de koffer in, maar mag hier blijven.

Seperti biasa karya Tess Gerritsen bukan cuma roman harlequin biasa, karena mengambil tema spionase ala Jack Higgins atawa Alistair MacLean.
