This story picks up where Fated left off. Emma has been kidnapped by the Kurjans and is on her way to be forced to mate with their new leader. Dage has no intention of letting that happen because Emma is his destined mate and Queen to his King. As she’s trying to figure out a way to escape a Black Hawk helicopter he tracks her down, rescues her and takes her back with him. Being a vampire with special powers sure comes in handy.

A lab is acquired for her and Dage’s brother, Kane, to do research to counteract some nasty viruses the evil Kurjans have spent the last hundred years developing. Several of their people are infected and it’s a race against time while they try to find a cure, find the spy in their midst and fight the Kurjans. Plus, avert a possible war with the Demons. And a possible war with the Irish Coven when Conn, Dage’s brother, goes to Ireland to claim his mate. Just another day in the life of the King of the Realm.

There are several side stories in Claimed also as we meet the leader of the Demons, some leaders of shifter groups, a few witches and some prophets. All of the threads introduced in Fated are coming together with threads from Claimed and we’re starting to see a picture forming. Questions are answered and more are posed. Rebecca Zanetti is a cruel cruel wench for keeping us on tenterhooks.

The Kayrs brothers are definitely HOT, their mates are no simpering misses, the action is fast-paced, the characters well-formed, the love scenes smokin’, the fight scenes action-packed without being overly long and tedious (as some tend to be) and the mystery is compelling.

This is the second book in Ms. Zanetti’s exciting new series. Her universe of vampires is refreshing and exhilarating. These are probably the most human vampires I have read about. While they have elements of some of my favorite vampires, they are in a class all their own. Both the Vampires and the Kurjans can only be male, so they have to look outside their race to find mates, but only certain females will work. They need females with physic abilities. The Kurjans have developed a virus that attacks the mates of the Vampires. Emma is in a race to find a cure to save both her sister and her unborn nephew.

This series has a strong undercurrent of adventure, almost overshadowing the romance. The medical lingo and background does not take away from the general story, but enhances it. Ms. Zanetti has developed an engaging and exciting new world.

The males in this series are a hard group to love. They are extremely alpha and exasperating at times. Their raw masculinity and power draw you in and holds on tight. Luckily the heroines are just as strong and know how to bring these big brutes to their knees.

If you are looking for a new adventure in the paranormal world, look no further then this new series. Fated and Claimed both have heart pounding action and sizzling chemistry, what more can you ask for!(less)

This was a nice strong sequel to the first book in the series. There were a few things that make it even more enjoyable. For one, all the set up and introductions to the Dark Protector world have pretty much been established so the story could focus more on the plot and characters. And for another thing, I liked the main characters better. And for another thing, I liked the main characters better. I enjoyed how the story took me further with the main story thread and a few of the other other continuing threads even while placing much of the emphasis on the romance of the new couple.

The story needs to be read in the series order for some of the reasons I presented above- mainly because it picks right up where book one leaves off. You might want to skip this review if you don't want series spoilers.

In the last book, Cara's geneticist sister, Emma, has been taken and is on her way to the Kurjan, Franco, who plans to make her his mate. Emma has psychic abilities which make her a potential vampire mate. In her case, its not just any vampire, but the king vampire, Dage. They have seen each other in dreams and visions for a long time. Emma is intrigued by Dage and loves what she sees in her dreams, but she also dreams her own death and the pain it will cause Dage so she doesn't want to put him through this by becoming his mate not to mention she's not a huge fan of fate.

Dage rescues Emma and the sparks fly immediately when he informs her of the changes in her life- she's coming with him and she's his mate. Dage wants to give Emma time to get used to the idea, but he soon realizes that she's not planning to adjust to her circumstances; she's planning to run. He does what any strong, alpha-type would do; he takes away the choice and brands her as his mate. Emma's plans to escape are forestalled when they discover that someone on the inside has infected Cara, Katie and Lily, one of the vampire prophets. Emma races to find a cure with the help of Dage's brother Kane and Conn's mate, Moira. Dage and the others must deal with the war between the vamps and the Kurjans, the demons declaring war, and someone trying to de-throne Dage. It all gets pretty exciting by the end and there is this scene close to the end that was absolutely scorching hot in its intensity between Dage and Emma. He's not the King for nothing.

With the first book, so much page time was devoted to introductions, but this one just got busy with the plot. Not to say that there was no additional world building. There is the intro of witches and demons to the paranormals. It was a nice active plot, but one that focused on the romance between Dage and Emma too. They are a couple that don't come together easily or quietly. She comes from the same abusive household as Cara so the baggage is there just in a different way with Emma. Emma thinks she has to shoulder the problems of the world alone and fix everyone. Dage is constantly trying to wrest this responsibility from her and just get her trust him. Needless to say, its quite the battle both inside and outside the bedroom.
As to the other plot, I love how it progresses, but there is a great deal of intrigue involved in it. I think this promises something good for the rest of the series.

This book/series will appeal to those who enjoy steamy paranormal romance.(less)

Well Im not such a fan for paranormal romances (although I do love the black dagger brotherhood series its just too good) buuuut, Im kind of liking this series, there's something primal in all the males and I just love the marking thing!! if you are into paranormal books this series will definetly be in your taste, it has pretty much every paranormal character.

Should be 2.5 stars but the hint a brogue made it 3. Total sucker for the accent. The rest well... it was okay. The relationship was better established between Dage and Emma. You could see where they'd be able to fall for each other, because there was a lot of history to build it. The problem I had was they were only together a limited amount and 90% of the time was in bed, so to speak. The sex was not written well. With the exception of when he was mentally controlling her, (flashes of Chevy Ch...more Should be 2.5 stars but the hint a brogue made it 3. Total sucker for the accent. The rest well... it was okay. But seriously, Emma grabbed the blue ribbon the minute Dage looks at her??? Multiples times? And it wasn't like the sex was creative either. Lora Leigh can pull that off, but unfortunately not this author. I also had a problem with "Ouch" being repeated throughout the book from even the bad-ass heros. Who actually says "Ouch"? The characters just lacked in personality and individual identity.

Again editing was nasty here. Just look at the blurb on the book's site page. Dialogue from multiple characters were in the same paragraph instead of broken out so you could actually tell who was speaking. Quotation marks missing constantly. I had hoped lessons would have been learned from the first book, but they weren't. Writing was still very choppy, point of views jumped all over the place and direction was diffused. The emotional connection was much better, however. Emma was able to see/feel where Dage's intense rages stemmed from, communicating his depth of feelings for her. So her submission or compromise came from knowing the pain and fear she put him through. But the whole dominance thing was limited to one perspective of their relationship, which to me, lacked thoughtful intelligence in the story. Also, some of the science could have been better researched to make Emma sound as brilliant as she was supposed to be. I know this isn't the genre to push that issue, but still, I enjoy a book with creativity and clever wit.

I really liked the premise of this story line and the series has such potential but I don't think I will continue. Especially not at the prices these books cost.(less)

I'm actually giving this 2.5 stars. This book was ok. I feel like it didn't bring anything new to the series; which is saying a lot considering it's book 2. A lot of the dialogue and situations between the lead male and female were repeated from book 1. Sometimes even word for word.
The sexy-times in this book (and the last) were far from hot and steamy. I mean he looked at her nipples and she orgasmed for crying out loud! There was also a lot of whimpering during the sex, which I found odd. Tha...more

Emma is a scientist, who grew up in an abusive home with a father that beat her because she could see the future. She spent her youth stepping in front of his fists to protect her younger sister Cara. Flip to the future, and Emma is still stepping in front of others to protect them, doesn't trust easily, and tries to carry the weight of the future on her shoulders. The problem is that the vampire that wants to mate her - King Dage - wants to protect her, too, and he'll do anything to see to it.

What I didn't like about the first book is that Talen was an enormous jackass. He used his supernatural powers to bully Cara into being okay with being his mate. Dage, on the other hand, is more diplomatic than his brother, but he is equally lethal in fighting skills and power, and he doesn't plan to let Emma keep her guard up for long. I cheered for Talen all the way up until the last little bit of the book, when he used his powers against Emma to force her to beg for him, to swear to never put herself in harms way. I'm not a big fan of this kind of forced seduction, and I'm walking a fine line of being a hypocrite but this just didn't work for me. In an FS that I like, you might have a man (vamp, shifter, human, whatever) sexually tease the hell out of woman until she professes her love and swears to be his. But in this scenario, the FS just seemed mean. He already had her love, he already loved her, he was just showing her that he was strong and better than her and it left me feeling cold and disappointed. So, stone-throwers, yes I'm a bit o' a hypocrite about my forced seductions, which I think in some circumstances can work very well, but Rebecca pulled a similar stunt in the first book between Talen and Cara that also made me hate him a bit and that's a shame.

There is a traitor and I won't spoil who it is because I'm so not that girl. What bugged me about it is that I just didn't care. I found the reasoning behind the traitor's actions to be confusing and they never were explained out entirely, which left me wondering why they did what they did and whether I should even care or not.

Little Janie - okay I'm not a big fan of kids in books like this, especially when they are clearly focal characters. We're talking years before she gets to be mated, and I will probably always think of her as the little pink princess with a stable of ponies from all her uncles. I don't think that Zanetti really always carries off the dialog and thoughts for such a young child. My daughter is ten and is just now figuring out that boys are stupid. I know she didn't understand that five years ago. So I think you have to suspend belief a little with her, and maybe she's that way because of all her powers and such, but still....she could have been older to start, right?

So aside from the last part of the story that I didn't care for, the rest of the book is a hot mess of vampire-mating-biting-throw-me-against-the-wall sex (my favorite), a lot of diplomacy, some new allies in the war against the bad vampires (kurjans), and a really shocking twist that left me gasping in surprise. Overall, a good story, well executed within a lively and interesting world operating just under our human noses. I haven't decided if I'll continue on, although I've heard that Conn's story is awesome, so maybe I'll give it another go.(less)

I thought Fated was bad, but I could not imagine the sequel was actually worse. This kind of stories are awfully reminiscent of pre-feminism, of a time when a woman "wanted" to be raped/forced/compelled and books told that kind of "truth".

Premise: There are two vampire factions: Kurjans and "the good guys" (for lack of better term). In addition to differences in appearance, Kurjans are also unable to walk in sunlight and are ostracized from the Realm. The Realm is essentially the world of the "others" (vampires, shape-shifters, witches, fae, demons, etc). Dage is king of the Realm, and he (along with his brothers) negotiated the truce between the Realm and Kurjans. That truce has now ended becaus...more 2nd of the Dark Protector Series.

Premise: There are two vampire factions: Kurjans and "the good guys" (for lack of better term). In addition to differences in appearance, Kurjans are also unable to walk in sunlight and are ostracized from the Realm. The Realm is essentially the world of the "others" (vampires, shape-shifters, witches, fae, demons, etc). Dage is king of the Realm, and he (along with his brothers) negotiated the truce between the Realm and Kurjans. That truce has now ended because of Janie, a 4 year old girl with amazing psychic abilities who has been fated by the oracles to do something BIG.

Story: Dage and Emma have been dreaming of each other since she was teenager (apparently, he's been dreaming of her for centuries). I'm not sure if this dreaming is a common characteristic between mates, since it wasn't readily apparent in the previous book, but with Janie also dreaming of guys, perhaps it is?). Emma is Cara's sister, and she is a very strong psychic. Dage knows upon meeting Cara that the woman he's been dreaming of as his mate is her sister Emma. Emma has been on the run for weeks from the Kurjans after learning of their existence at the genetic lab she was working. Emma, along with Cara, is a scientist devoted to genetics.

Review: It was a little frustrating to have Emma and Dage at odds. Neither seemed to live up to the potential promised in book one, Fated. I was expecting Emma to be a little more "kick ass" based on how Cara described her, and Dage wasn't as powerful and kingly as I thought he'd be. Really the only time we're introduced to his true power is at the end, and even then it's a brief description of the destruction he caused and fight with the werewolf. There's really not a lot else that showcases his power (especially when it seems Emma can almost instantly acquire the same talents like teleportation). As with the last book, and even more so in this book, the DNA/science was a bit much. It's great that the author has such a unique take on the whole vampire phenomenon but as a reader, I don't need to know quite so much about the mechanics of it. My eyes tended to glaze over those portions of the book.

I did enjoy the cattiness between Emma and Portia, although I can already see where that's going in the next book. Zanetti definitely did a good job of setting up the next couple of books, and I'm looking forward to Conn's story. One of the highlights of this book for me was Moira.

Mechanics: well-written with few spelling or grammatical errors. There really is nothing more frustrating than reading a book, especially one with a potentially good story, and finding many spelling/grammatical mistakes. It makes the book sloppy and the author seem careless. There are several authors that I refuse to read now because of this thoughtlessness (case in point: Lora Leigh). If an author can't be bothered to edit her material, then I can't be bothered to read it. All that being said, I did not have any problems with Zanetti. You can tell she takes pride in her writing!

Overall grade: B+ Not quite as good as Fated for me, but I'm looking forward to Hunted, Book 3 next year. (less)

Book two in the Dark Protectors series by Rebecca Zanetti and it follows on pretty much seamlessly from book one, but this time we are concentrating on Emma, Cara's sister, and the king of the Realm, Dage.

Both Dage and Emma are likeable characters. Dage is powerful but controlled, diplomatic but capable of great shows of force, unlike Talen, who was a dominant through and through, Dage was a little more subtle in his control issues.

A "good-guy" vampire will only take one of these women if she is his fated mate, but if she is, then she's pretty much at his alpha mercies. Fortunately, since the matings are fated, she's also won over by his sexy lovin' and tender protective instincts before too long.
In this second book of the series, Emma, a psychic geneticist, is "Claimed" by Dage, the Vampire King, the man she's had visions of since she was 15. And their romance is HOT.

If anything, this story was even better than the first, which was a great story too. Emma and Kane, another one of Dage's vampire brothers (who is also a scientist), are in a race against time to discover an antidote to an enemy bioterrorism virus which will un-mate vampire mates and turn them back into mortal humans again. It also is suspected of turning shifters into insane werewolves and it threatens to kill Talen and Cara's unborn child (from Bk 1). Emma and Dage have incredible chemistry together but take the whole book to really come to trust each other in the satisfying end.

Though Dage and Emma come to an HEA, the story moves on to the next books to follow all the vampire brothers as the war continues and, presumably, they will all find their fated ladyloves. Most intriguing is the little girl, Janie, Cara's daughter, who has extraordinary power, yet to be fully revealed. She is prophesied to play a critical role in the future of the realm (or the world ?) I suspect her book will be the grand finale of this series, and her mate will be Zane, her dream friend. And no clue, yet, as to what he is, but I can tell he is a teenager who is growing up to be as sexy and as irresistible as the Vampire King and his brothers.

"Claimed" continued the thrilling story of the Realm War against the Kurjans while focusing on the romance between King Dage and Emma. While the first book in this series, "Fated", focused on the relationship between Cara and Talen, we continued to learn about there story as well in "Claimed." I love the inner plot with these books, but I continue to be appalled at the fact that all the Kayrs men feel the need to "break" their women. I was disgusted with Talen, but I figured I would go ahead and give the second book a try. Dage was wonderful at first, but the further you get into the book, the more of an @ss he becomes. I am loving this series more and more now!
In the first book - Talen seems more like a super human than a vampire. He only drinks blood during sex or battle, and it's only his super strong strength and quickness that Cara seems to get a little bit of once mated.

While I loved the first in the series, this one really just seemed to repeat a ton of stuff. I get that Emma and Cara are sisters and are bound to have similar personalities. But with them both being so headstrong and against the mating in the beginning it just seemed repetitious to me.

2.5 Stars. It was okay, I guess; but nothing special. The plot showed promise, but never fully engaged me. To be king, Dage seemed to have his powers held sharply in check by the prophets. Emma fluttered about and wrung her hands. There was sooo much talk about genetics and DNA that ultimately went nowhere. I am loving, LOVING, this series. Claimed has taken the Dark Protectors series to another level for me.

The second couple up to the bat are Emma and Dage. Emma is the sister of Cara who is the heroine from the first book. Dage is the king of the 'good' vampires. He is the oldest of 5 brothers and the only real diplomat in the batch. All of the brothers are a little vicious and have more power than I traditionally see outside of the Carpathian vampires.

This is the second book I've read in this series. I really like it. There's a lot going on, action, humor, emotions, and lots of magic/paranormal stuff. Better than the first. I found the Dage/Emma romance much more comfortable reading than TAlen/Cara even though Dage retains his super alpha male dominating personna. The action really picks up in this novel with war being declared on the Realm from three sides with a possible fourth soon to follow. Add in a deadly virus that threatens note only vampire mates but shifters too as well as a dose of internal betrayal and the blood and danger starts flowing almost non-stop.
