Never feed a bear. Got that? So, I haven't been reading these in the order they were written, but I have emailed the author and she said you don't have to. Just one more to go and then I'll be able to say I've read all thirteen (started in April). They are each only 140-150ish pages, but it has been a struggle to get through them due to other activities/employment/classes I choose to pursue. My basket of books all picked out for summer reading still sits on the floor of the livingroom. I plan to ...more
When mysterious and uncharacteristic bear behavior results in the black bear population attacking humans in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, wildlife expert and veterinarian, Dr. Olivia Landon and her family, photographer husband, Steven and their two children, Ashley and Jack travel from their home in Idaho to help solve the mystery. Rangers Kip Delaney and Blue Firekiller are also part of the team. Blue's son, Yonah, and classmate, Merle befriend the Landon kids, although they don't li ...more
I absolutely love the national parks and can't wait to visit as many as possible. When I first came across a book series that is themed in various national parks I was elated, as I have done writing activities with students that are very similar to this. It is truly about combining facts about a national park with a fictional story.

That being said, the content was absolutely incredible and there is so much to be learned about Great Smokey Mountains National Park. However, the plot was very poor

Jack (Age 14) and his younger sister Ashley (almost 12) are enjoying the sights of Gatlinburg, TN while their mother, a wildlife veterinarian, studies elk at Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Soon however, Dr. Olivia Landon's expertise is needed on a more urgent situation: several recent black bear attacks that occurred in and near GSMNP is cause for dire concern. Jack takes it upon himself to investigate: Are two new friends, Yonah Firekiller (Age 16) who still holds a childhood grudge again ...more

I finished the mystery Night of the Black Bear today. It had157 pages. I thought it was interesting because it talked about a lot of places I have been. Jack and his family try to help park rangers figure out why the bears are attacking people. Can you guess why? There were a lot of different theories. I would recommend the book.

It made me feel like I was watching Scooby-Doo, trying to solve the mystery...I liked it. Except for one reference that seemed to put down Tennessee people, which was unusually offensive to me, it was cute.

I love this series that is about National Parks. Two kids and their Mother and Father, of whom both are scientists/photograpers, go to different parks to solve mysteries. It is a very nice series for children ages 8 thru 11, I think.

"May you live in interesting times."

That ambiguous wish was not meant to be kind, because interesting times can be difficult. You and I certainly live in interesting times - dangerous, challenging, and fascinating.

My parents were born just before the start of the twentieth century; my youngest grandchild arrived in this century's final decade. The years in between have been the most dynamic in the
