Not coming from a 'high church' tradition, there are only a few days I would recognize as commemorating a saint, so this was lots of new info for me. The book is a lighthearted profile of hundreds of saints. They are listed alphabeticall and also according to days of the year. Reading this book brings back memories of my Catholic school days! I learned that Charles Borromeo is the patron saint of starch makers. This is a really wiggy read. It is a reference book not a book intended to be read cover to cover. It is almost as good as the masterpiece Magnificent Corpses by Anneli Rufus.

This is an old favorite - an encyclopedic treatment of all the saints from A to Z. Accurate but very much tongue-in-cheek, and extremely funny.

I guess I wanted more dirt on the saints.

Hugely entertaining dictionary of saints, written with a very dry, wry tone.
