A second charming collection of cartoons about the friendship of a dog and a cat. Sounds like a children's book, it's true, but McDonnell starts to show his chops as an artist, as he gently parodies more famous works of art. More characters (mostly animals) are introduced into the series.

The second collection. Where the art is all the recognizable form. And things get introduced.

The guard dog appeared last time, but this time he takes form as the chained dog of the strip. Shtinky Pudding appears in a Christmas tale. Shnelly appears, or at least her ears -- she's only seen in the window as Mooch makes his first efforts to woo her. (And then gets over her.)

MUTTS makes my heart smile big time.

The characters are so touching and heartfelt that I have cried numerous times reading this comic.

A+ on all the MUTTS comics by Patrick McDonnell!

Charles M. Schulz, creator of "Peanuts", said it best: "To me, "Mutts" is exactly what a comic strip should be."

Delightful, bittersweet at times (more sweet than bitter).
