Battle Cry is the riveting Marine epic by the bestselling author of such classics as Trinity and Exodus.

Originally published in 1953, Leon Uris's Battle Cry is the raw and exciting story of men at war from a legendary American author.

This is the story of enlisted men – Marines – at the beginning of World War II. They are a rough–and–ready tangle of guys from America's citi...more

Hard to get into the "Marine Stuff" WW II in the Pacific.Stories of individual soldiers was good.

Coral Atols-island formed by depressions in the ocean. Larger islands sunk leaving hard shelled little coral ones above the surface.

Micronesia-one of the 3 major groups of islands in the central Pacific..Atolls run in several groups, Ellice island, the Gilberts, the Marshalls.

This book is for the Marine Corps what "Tales of the South Pacific" was for the Navy: a great tale of the organization's finest hour told through the experiences of those who lived it. The characters are quirky and authentic, representing a partial cross-section of America at large, and they are pleasingly sympathetic. The narrator Mac is an archetype, a tough, dedicated, professional warrior with surprising wisdom and insight and a deep, melancholy appreciation for the separation between himsel...more

This is one book that I keep coming back to; my copy is in tatters from multiple readings. The story follows a group of young men that enlist in the Marine Corps in the wake of the attack on Pearl Harbor, through to the middle of the 1944. This was Leon Uris's first novel, and while it certainly will not rank as one of the classic novels of literature, it is fast paced, with engaging characters.

I served 8 years in the Marine Corps. I read this book while I was a Marine option Navy ROTC midshipman, it was the propaganda the doctor ordered. A little on the melodramatic when it comes to the romance (yeah, there are chicks in this book), I loved this book! Granted, I bought into the Esprit de Corps from a very young age, but Uris is a good writer and even my wife read and liked it (I made her when we were dating. It was sort of her test like in "Diner" :-)). I would follow up this book wit...more

I LOVE this book. I first discovered it over 25 years ago and I still keep going back to it to read it again. It is the only book that I have ever finished and then turned back to the first page to start all over again. I love the way you get to know the characters, how each one has his story and how each one lives or dies. It is incredibly sad when one of the characters you love dies but that is the way of war. The book also has an fabulous feel good factor but it always makes me cry. "Home is...more

The story of Marine Corp during World War II narrated by an one of the Old Breed who leads a group newly enlisted Marines through the hell of the Pacific. Uris was a Marine in WWII and this was the first book he wrote. I read it as a teenager and it was the reason I eventually enlisted in the Marine Corp. As usual great characters pull you through the story of the battles on those god awful islands and the liberties in between. Not as gruesome as the histories that came out of those campaigns bu...more

I could relate to this book--I was a Marine Cpl. when I read the book.

This book is a personal favorite of mine. I read in first back in the 1970's and have read it several times since.

With so many reviews, there is little new I can say that many fans of this book have not already said. I really like the diversity of characters--studious Marion; All-American Boy Danny' street tough Joe Gomez and anothers. I really like the different varities of scenes--there is both humor and tragedy. Yes, some the scenes are a bit unevern, but this WAS a first novel.

I like the way...more

Pulling on his own experience as a Marine in WW II, Leon Uris--known for his epic novels such as Exodus, Trinity, Mila 18--tells the story of the US Marines who fought in the South Pacific--the officers, the grunts, the street-wise toughs, the guys from everytown USA. It's got humor, guts, glory, and heart break. There are some scenes from bootcamp that will have you laughing till you cry. And some of the battle scenes will have you crying. Been too many years, I need to go back and re-read this...more

So far, I just love this book. It is epic like Michner's books, but more about the characters (a bit of Payton Place for the military). Anyway, this book is from the 1950s (I don't know how I missed this author)and is about 4-5 guys in the marines in WWII. Most are drafted and serve under "Mac" one of the main narrators. The book is mostly about these men and their relationships at home and with each other as they work through boot camp and into war in the Pacific. Not much war action and I'm on...more

Another book I read years ago. Uris' take on a group of Marines from enlistment through the war (WWII). The men come from vastly different backgrounds and grow into a coherent unit. The book begins at the beginning of the war when America's armed forces were small and under equiped with only a small core of experinced troops. (this was true of Army, Navy, and Marines). The narrator is an experinced old time Marine sargent who leads the men through growth and battles.

I found this in the 9th grade. It was too much for a kid that young. I read it cover to cover, over and over, and over again. I've worn out three copies in my life.

The character development is impeccable, and the battles are written the way battles happen. You connect with these guys real good, go through the entire Marine experience with them. And at the end, some survive, while most don't.

Leon Uris never wrote another book this good. Not even close.

I was really excited to read this book, but it seemed to take FOREVER for any action and Leon sure got my messed up with all the names and switching back and forth to this and that. Mabey I'm just a crappy reader?? I did like the book but i sure wanna here more COMBAT stories in my reads, that shit that makes you wanna flip to the next page or stay up way past your bed time to read the next chapter.

The book and the movie are almost the same, although the movie wrapped things up a little neater. Uris was in the Corps during WWII and this novel was based on his experiences. In addition to the story, the book alluded to the lack of preparedness on the part of the US back in the late 30's. I only hope it is not a prediction of what is going on with the military cuts of today.

I read this book a long time ago and read it once more this year. The bond of frienship and camaraderie that developed between guys who had nothing in common except signing up for the Marines. Their journey through life, the paisn and sorrow and the humour. How differences can be bridged. It is one of the best books I have ever read and Leon Uris is one of my favourite authors.

Pretty good first novel and one that many war novel fans think is one of the best. My opinion: good story, a little to long and the dialogue between the characters, especially in the romantic scenes, is a bit contrived and corny (I'm not an "Oh! My darling!" sort of guy). Other than that, I'm glad I read the book and I recommend it.
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

I read this book over 20 years ago -- I remember that I cried as I read it -- because my father was a Marine at Guadalcanal. He never talked about his experiences there, as most veterans of combat don't. He must have been about 21 years old when he lived through this hell hole.

Written by Leon Uris. Wonderful, wonderful book about the battle of Guadalcanal.

One of Uris' novels is on my top ten list, Mila 18, covering the same period of history. Looks like that will be the only one for a while.

While there is no doubt that Uris is one of the best contempory authors of the last century I have not succumbed to the propaganda that "everybody talks this way so just read past it and get over yourself". And to all those that think this kind of language is okay I would challenge you to re-sensitize yourself and then tell me it doesn't bother you.

Classic war story; so revered and respected it was often issued to cadets in military training schools and ROTC programs. Approved by the US military. Of course, you can take that two ways. And you should.

Its remarkable precisely for its staid, underlying blandness and tight-lipped aspect; the airless quality; the lack of all the normal and messy psychology; the omission of doubt and mistrust that we know happens in real life. Its a book which is written.. 'by-the-book'. At least that's what I r...more

I read it in 1968 - my first Leon Uris book - and I've read it 10+ times since. He's the only author I've collected in hardback. Learn history through his fiction - the history is accurate, told through the eyes of his fictional "family" of characters. The battle in the pacific from every different perspective.

This selection was different than many of Uris' books. It made me appreciate the United States marines and the job they do for us. Amazing what they go for and their courage. Although the actual characters are fictional, the actual events were real. Yes, of course I cried with them.... tough read.

I read this book on the train when I was on my way to basic training. I was surprised by how accurate the book was when describing training. I "relived the book" several times during basic training (and I was in the Air Force).

Story about a U.S. Marine Battalion in training and in battle
in the Pacific theater during WWII. I read this one after seeing the hit movie. I'm glad I did. Uris became one of my favorite authors.

great read as juvenile fiction, especially for general glorification of war and militarism. Its descriptions of how the "old breed" of the USMC were trained is the only thing that stuck with me.
Susan
I agree, totally riveting. This is a "you were there" book that led me to read all of the author's books I could get my eyes on, and hooked me also on WWII historical accounts, fictional and factual.
James
This is one of the first novels I read, maybe the first. I probably would not enjoy it today, but at the time it was terrific. And it got me interested in reading.
Jason
I wish I could give this more stars. I read this so many years ago that I truly don't remember when I first read this. However it has stuck with me all these years.
Janet Wilcox
a varied array of characters mark this "earthy" portrayal of WWII and the Marines. I liked the book, but it has a lot of profanity adn soldier talk.
Jeff
I've read this book a hundred times and I still love it each time. I think part of my mythologizing the Marine Corps started when I read this book as a kid.
Christie
This was my first Uris novel. Had a huge impact on my love (for a decade!) of historical novels, esp. WW2. I can still remember it was the first first-person narration of a soldier's experience.
