This is a fun and whimsical book about art: a boy named art who likes to create art. The narrative is very simple and the illustrations are very artistic. I loved that our girls were able to identify different techniques from their art classes and they were excited to tell me how they created similar pieces of art. Our girls told me that this book reminded them of Harold and the Purple Crayon, especially with his drawings of the moon and simple silhouettes.

Overall, it's a short, entertaining boo...more

This book is reminiscent of so many art & children books, including Ish and The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, and even The Dot and the Line: A Romance in Lower Mathematics by Norton Juster (which really is different, I suppose) and the very famous classic Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson. And, I know I’m forgetting at least two, and probably many more that I’ve read within the last couple of years that are unfortunately not coming to mind at the moment. They’re all wonderful book...more

My dad is the executive director at an art museum and my mother is a photographer and retired art teacher, so as you can imagine I grew up surrounded by art and always being told that the art I made was beautiful. I was lucky to have that and Art (the boy) has that in this book. I must be getting mushy in my old(er) age because this book made me cry. It made me miss the times when I laid around on the floor coloring with my dad or taking photography classes with my mom. This is a special book th...more

So much love for this story about Art and his art. I'm a big fan of Patrick McDonnell and his scribble style illustrations and this one definitely does not disappoint. A fun story that follows a little boy as he madly creates squiggles and zigs of art until he tires himself out and wakes up to find his work proudly displayed on the fridge by his mother. A sweet, creative story that's fun to read aloud!

Open up, flip the pages, and let Art introduce you to his art.

Energy, inspiration, imagination, and huge-happy-heaps of color leap off each page! Art colors, draws, swirls, twirls, scribbles, and squiggles his creations all with a huge smile splattered across his face! :D

This book’s infectious and a bit mischievous fun and energy make me want to grab a crayon and fill my world with color!

Pure joy!

This is a delightful story about Art, who loves to make art. The interplay between words and illustrations is such a treat, "This is Art" (an illustration of the boy). "And this is art" (illustration of a work of art). "Art's art" and so on. A joyous celebration of art, childhood, imagination and feeling completely and utterly free to create without judgment. And the ending is so sweet! Love this book.

This is such a wonderful book! Art is an artist who loves to make all kinds of art. (See what I did there?) The entire book is a play on words of sorts and Art is a character reminiscent of Harold from _Harold and the Purple Crayon_. The illustrations in this book are superb, both bright and energetic, and readers will be inspired to make art of their own. Highly recommended.

I've never met a Patrick McDonnell book I didn't like, and this one did not disappoint. A story about creativity, and how messy it can be, I think this would be a great book to read to young children before embarking on an exploration of different art materials with them. As I say to my daughter, any day when you get into the bathtub dirty was a good day!
Becky
Easy to compare to Harold and the Purple Crayon, this is a sweet, simple book about creativity, though I would have preferred a girl or cat as the central character, as with McDonnell's other books.

Love the prose, love the illustrations! Read this one to kids, then start painting...this delightful book encourages them to see themselves as Art, and art. As magical as Harold and his purple crayon, this book is about creativity and possibility: two subjects kids excell at!
Angie
I loved this short, short tales's visual exuberance and celebration of "Art." My favorite line describes "art" as "wired"--a perfect description of a child's energy levels and an artist's sensibility with enmeshed with his/her art (in whatever form).
Lonica
Perhaps its her current fascination with painting, but Amelia really enjoyed this book. I didn't mind reading it multiple times, either. It would be a good way to teach puns and words with multiple meanings, as well.

BRILLIANT! McDonnell is quite the artist to create a story about Art’s art with visual and verse art. Art, the boy, reminds of a comic character, perhaps because of his shape or maybe from his energy and movement but he is a great character that readers innately like. My favorite scenes would be the wordless spread and the end, which shows a supportive mom because every young artist needs a supporter to help them keep their confidence and creativity.
Laurie
Absolutely wonderful book....even my 5th graders love this book. Every home with children needs to own or borrow this book from the library. Look closely at the pictures, McDonnell is a genius with simplicity.
Paula
Very simple illustrations and a few words of rhyming text makes this a wonderful story time book. You could use a big piece of paper to scribble on as art does in the book
A rhyming tribute to a budding young artist.

This book is similar to Ish and The Dot, both by Peter Reynolds. The play on words about a boy named Art who loves art is fun. You'll be tempted to get out your sketchpad or watercolors after you read it.

I love the art and the play on the name Art. The kids love this one, and it was a good one to read before an arts and crafts program, as well. Also, it ends on a warm note about motherlove.

Art, a little boy, creates his art freely and with creative flare in Art. Art draws lines in the form of zigs and zags, scribbles that squiggle and dots in many colors and sizes. He plops splotches and blotches on the page, then with a flourish creates the curliest cue.

His inspiration is the paper and his mind and from there he doodles and creates his masterpieces. Exhausted he falls fast asleep and when he awakens, all those masterpieces have been carefully hung on the refrigerator by his moth...more

Beautifully illustrated and nice story. Easy to read for young readers and very fun way to look at art for children. 5 yr old son wanted to read this one more than once.
Jenny
Art is an artist and creates art out of squiggles and lines and zigs and zags. This book is filled with word play on the boy's name and his creations. Cute.

This is really cute and shows how the simplest lines and colors can turn into a good picture. It also has a play on words with Art (boy) and art (the thing).
Naomi
This is a fabulous book. The story is simple and fun for little ones and the artwork/ illustrations are great for children who like to doodle and draw.
Erika
A little boy named Art does Art. So cute and I loved how the squiggling and doodling was actually a way to teach children about art.
Alison
This is one of the best picture books I have ever read. It's cute and introduces some new words without being heavy or overwhelming.
Michelle
This book reminds me a lot of Press Here by Herve Tullet with the use of primary colors and the simplicity of the book.

Art and his art. This is such a lovely book about a little boy and his art. It is inspiring and great for discussing encouragement and persistence.

This book asks at one point -- "Art and his art/ Can you tell them apart?" And when you're looking at the small boy, splattered in paint with his Pollock-esque work around him, you'll be more than amused at the comparison.
Art is about Art, a young boy with a passion for art. You'll find many comparisons to Harold and the Purple Crayon, but I think Art is wonderful all on its own. The concept of an imaginative child who loves to draw (and whose mother happily displays his work on the fridge) is c...more
