The Valley of Secrets by Charmian Hussey is a secret treasure of fascinating facts about the Amazon set within a novel about a teenage boy who embarks on a mysterious journey to Cornwall, England. Teenager Stephen Lansbury has lived his whole life in an orphanage believing that he had no family to speak of. One day, out of the blue, an odd letter arrives for him. The letter requests that he meet with lawyer, Albert Postlethwaite. To Stephen's amazement, he is informed that he has inherited a gra...more

What happened in this book? I can't tell. It had no plot, no character development and to add insult to injury, the prose is dull. I had to whip myself into finishing and only because I hate purchasing and then letting the book languish. After all, if I finish at least I have the pleasure of mocking it.

Ummm, Stephen has spots and inherits some property and there's some mystery surrounding it and weird animals (and you never quite figure out what they are) and in the end he has to stay on th...more

One of those 'don't judge a book by the cover' cautionary tales.

I read it a few years ago, and I remember that it was very boring, very dry, and very meandering.

I have to quote another person's review "recommends it for: Absolutely no one, dying people who want to speed up the process" Ouch. But accurate.

An interesting, gentle read, but too much "save the rain forests" propaganda. I actually enjoyed the story, but was annoyed by the references to how people are destroying the Amazon jungle. The story itself could stand alone without the sales pitch.

There were parts of this one that I really liked. But there were other parts (the first half mostly) that was just. too. slow. A couple of kids at school are reading right now. I'm curious to hear what they have to say.

So far this book seems interesting! Its a fantasy thing and all. I'm not very far into it considering I'm one of the most impatient people on earth and it's kind of slow moving.

This was a very peculiar book; not unpleasant but nothing that gave me any pleasure. I wish I could remember who recommended it so I could find out what they liked it so much.

This was a really good book about family and I recommend it to people who like the sorts of books with orphans and smart kids in them. (aka Maggie and possibly Lauren)

Pretty good book, intriguing, but after the first hundred pages when there still wasn't any dialogue...need I say more?

So, so boring. I could barely get through it. There was no dialogue for hundreds of pages. Don't pick this up.

Interesting mystery, but not what I thought. A little disappointing.
