After I was sufficiently into this book, I started hearing things that sounded familiar to me, being an Army brat myself. When I discovered they were stationed in Fort Campbell, Kentucky (where I had lived with my soldier father), I called my dad to ask if he knew Mike Blaise. Not only did he know him, but he was with him in Iraq when he was killed. He had no idea there had been a book written about him and was moved to tears when I bought him a copy. This book affected me and my life profoundly...more
There is a twist at the very end of this book, not a twist per se, but still an event that I did not expect until it happened. This even just shows how up in the air everything is while deployed and how you should never take anything for granted when deployed. The rest of the book is a nice story of a married couple and how they work through their marriage while both being soldiers, and at first, one an officer and one enlisted. It's written in the woman's POV, which is nice because most of the...more
I had the opportunity to meet Kate Blaise (now Kate Clarke) over Memorial Day weekend of this year while she was in town visiting one of my friends who, as it turns out, is one of Kate's oldest friends and someone that is mentioned several times throughout her book. It wasn't until about an hour into our evening together that I discovered that Kate had written a book about her life in the military and the love that she lost while fighting for her country. In the few hours we spent in each others...more

Far too much of the book covers the author's childhood- the relevant parts are life experiences leading to her joining the army and dating her later husband, but grampy's fudge recipe could have been edited out. Or the structure of interleaving of adult li...more

OMG I loved this book! She and her hubby go into the military, and are both stationed in Iraq at the beginning of the war. He is a helicopter pilot and she is part of forward support, so they rarely get to see one another and this helps them recreate a marriage that seemed to be falling apart. They are scheduled to come home when he is killed in a crash. It was heart-wrenching to read, but it was so wonderful. I honestly cried with her as I read it, trying to imaging what I would do in her situa...more
