This is basically a generic review of all the HellBoy and HellBoy related books.
Fact is, they're intricately connected. Even the stories which were one shots, they become part of the HellBoy character.
Relying more on imagery than senseless exposition, Mike Mignola manages to bring a bit of Noir to his Detective in Red, as he fights the minions of darkness. Despite the obvious "demon turned hero who fights hell," noir feel, these HellBoy comics are less disturbing than the las...more

This volume is a batch of short stories. Which Mignola's storytelling style fits well. I'll just say now the art is the same as always and great as ever.
The Corpse: The publishing for this story gave it an interesting boundary, in that it was published two-pages at a time. The story deepens the lore in which the Hellboy world is founded. Loved the dialogue with the corpse.

Probably the best volume in the entire series, the short stories here capture the quintessential Hellboy. Only one is tied to the mysteries of Hellboy's origin and the whole convoluted Beast of the Apocalypse continuity. The rest, without those constraints, are free to veer off into the realms of horror, folktales, mythology and science that make the title so unique. It feels like the first time Mignola just let loose and told the kind of free-wheeling stories the character was made for. I w...more

I read the first volume of Hellboy a long time ago, and it never really hooked me. Mike Mignola's art was gorgeous, but there was just something distant in the story that prevented it from hooking me.
Since then, I've read a little B.P.R.D. and The Amazing Screw-on Head one-shot. The moody jagged art has really grown on me. I suppose it may be just an acquired taste. This volume (its a collection of different early serialized strips) re...more

Hellboy is a fantastic series. Volume 3 is especially awesome as it is more of a collection of short stories rather than a continuation of the main storyline. Not that the main story is bad, but the short story style really opens up some cool story telling. Taking inspiration from folk lore from around the world, these stories feel familiar and new all at once. Mike Magnola has an art style unlike anything else and like all his books, this is a pleasure to look at.

"supernatural short stories of the macabre"
a great collection of a number of mignola's hellboy works, with brief introductions for each by mignola, pertaining to the original release and commission. each one keeps adds to the hellboy mythos, whether it be by expanding hellboy's past, character's already mentioned, or just exploring another hellbooy mission. it is really a great read of course with mignola's signature art to complement the hellboy ambience

This is sort of a collection of random Hellboy adventures. I really like these collections that Mignola puts together, as they showcase his awesome ability to take a random folktale and shove Hellboy into it in an interesting way.
This is one of the better TPBs in the Hellboy series. All the stories are cool and the art is, of course, really well done.

One of the best Hellboy collections I've read yet, it gives subtle and beautiful insight into some of the familiar characters of the series. The Mignola introductions before each story really make this collection, peeking into the mind behind this comic is always a fun foray.

This might actually be my favorite Hellboy collection. It consists entirely of shorter pieces, some of which are probably some of the best Hellboy writing Mignola has come up with to date. My favorites are "The Corpse" and "The Chained Coffin."

I liked this better than the full-length Hellboy stories. Short and sweet little sequences here. A lot of these were published originally in two-page increments, so there's a lot going on in each page.

Mignola definitely refined his craft as the series progressed. He continued to build momentum with this collection, making improvements in story pacing and interesting frame-to-frame transitions.

Amazing. I think Mike really hits his stride in vol 3 of Hellboy.
