Another strong collection of short stories, though they just don't have the punch to them that the ones in volume three have. Each has a solid premise, but seems to end before a satisfying conclusion is reached. I love Hellboy's flip attitude and the way not everything has to have a logical explanation, but it's hard to feel satisfied by three straight stories that end with a shrug and "There you go," "You never see something like that coming," and "How's that?"

For me this one is worth the read just for the 2-page story on Hellboy and pancakes. I probably don’t need to say anymore, but I guess I will.
This volume of is a compilation of short stories divided into 3 sections. I enjoyed the notes at the beginning of each section from the author/illustrator on the background and inspirations for the stories. A lot of them were based on mythology and folktales such as King Volmer, Saint Leonard the Hermit, a Romanian vampire, and the Saint Dunsta...more

Hellboy: The Right Hand of Doom
A demon . . .
A demon skeptical of paranormal phenomena who happens to love pancakes = formula for success.
Mignola is one of the few writer/artists who really knows what he's doing. In "The Nature of the Beast" Mignola says just as much through the paneling as he does through dialogue. Contained in only a few pages we find a solid plot, dramatic irony, depth of character and a delicate splice of various mythologies. ...more

The Right Hand of Doom is similar to Volume 3, in that it collects a few short folktales in the beginning of the book and one longer story arc, "The Right Hand of Doom," to finish the work.
Like the previous edition, the short stories are all beautiful renditions of global tales I've never heard. Mignola deals with mostly European folklore, but he also includes a Japanese story in this issue that I found beautiful and interesting.

This volume is again a collection of short stories. I think this is probably the weakest of the first four volumes. Which is not to say bad. The art is of course as great as ever.
Pancakes: Heh.
The Nature of the Beast: I wish this story expanded on a couple of the things going for it.
King Vold: This one of my favorite short stories if just for the end reward and its little epilogue.
Heads: I like the Japan idea. And this story does develop a b...more

This is basically a generic review of all the HellBoy and HellBoy related books.
Fact is, they're intricately connected. Even the stories which were one shots, they become part of the HellBoy character.
Relying more on imagery than senseless exposition, Mike Mignola manages to bring a bit of Noir to his Detective in Red, as he fights the minions of darkness. Despite the obvious "demon turned hero who fights hell," noir feel, these HellBoy comics are less disturb...more

Maybe slightly less completely amazing than The Chained Coffin, The Right Hand of Doom still features a near-perfect collection of Hellboy short stories, including "Heads," "Goodbye, Mister Tod," and "Box Full of Evil."
These are short stories about Hellboy, from his early days in the BPRD right up to more mythology stuff about his mighty stone right hand (the eponymous Right Hand of Doom). Mostly based on various mythologies from around the world, the stories are fun if a little short -- some of them could do with a bit of expanding. I think my favourite is the first - a very short two-page story about Hellboy's first encounter with pancakes.
"Pancakes" continues to be one of my all time favorite short comics. It is funny to learn that Mignola proposed it as a joke and did not think it would ever be made. The rest of the collection is a bit more serious, especially the eponymous story and "Box Full Of Evil", but that is good, too. A fine trade, even if a reader doesn't know much about the character or world.
Japanese floating-head demons, killer ectoplasm, Romanian vampires, the Beast-of-the-Apocalypse, a gun-wielding monkey & a variety of occult hijinks-- all gloriously wrought by the pen of Mike Mignola-- and I'd give it five stars for "Pancakes" alone.
I always enjoy Hellboy. This volume cleared up a lot of issues with hell boy being the bringer of the apocalypse. And normally I detest short story comics, but the few in the beginning of this volume were actually pretty good!
Great artwork. Even if there was no dialogue, you could pretty easily construct the stories together about what's happening. The dialogue simply adds to the stories. Definitely worth reading.
Another volume of various one-shots. These stories continue to give us clues to Hellboy's past, ties up loose plot threads from earlier stories, and gives us clues to future stories.
I love Hellboy's short stories. I feel Hellboy is perfect for short stories, Mignola is also perfect for short stories. Short stories fit the character and author to the T.
Like the Chained Coffin, this book is a collection of several short stories along with two stories that further the overall Hellboy plot. Although I didn't like the short stories in this one as much as the shorts from the Chained Coffin, they were still exceptionally good. "Pancakes" stands out though: hilarious. I can't think about that story and not smile. At only 2 pages, it does a great job in describing Hell's "blackest hour".

I wrote an article on Hellboy for Guys Lit Wire. Check it out here.
This series fell a little flat in some places. I'd prefer a longer arc as opposed to a series of one-off stand alone issues.
Another good volume, but a little bit of a letdown from the last. Still, the short stories are strong.
It was really fun and fast paced. I've always liked hellboy's attitude, based on the movies, so it was fun to see it in some of the source material
As much as I have enjoyed the short story format, I hope Mignola moves back to the main story arc in the next volume. He touches on it briefly in this one, but it's really just a teaser.
