I always try lots of free books on Amazon since you will certainly stumble upon a gem eventually. This book was such a fun read!! The phone sex operator was smoothly handled, it didn't come across obscene or prudish and added a lot of humor to the book. The whole book was hilarious!! I really enjoyed the mystery of it too, there were a lot of suspects and reasons to incriminate them all. If there were any herrings, there were 5! I really appreciated a true sleuth who sought out clues. Emily didn...more

I picked this up on a whim. Honestly it's probably something I wouldn't normally have read but the name and description of the novel was interesting enough that I pulled the trigger and frankly, I needed a break from all the dark and brooding horror that I've been reading lately. Phone Kitten is a breath of fresh air!

Emily has hit a rough patch. A friend of hers stabbed her in the back at work, causing her to lose her job so what's a self professed 'chub' girl to do? Why, why not be a phone sex...more

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it’s characters. Emily feels invisible to the outside world, and has allowed people to walk over and dismiss her all of her life. Until she discovers her ‘friend’ has stolen her work and passes it off as her own. Fed up, Emily finally lets all her pent up emotions boil over, but it ends up costing her her job. Faced with tuition and bills, Emily becomes a phone sex operator to make due, and murder, mystery, and comedy ensue.

I loved Emily’s character because she...more

Marika Christian is on tour with her novel Phone Kitten through CLP Blog Tours. Christian hits it out of the ballpark with this hysterical, quirky, and endearing story, told through the eyes of Emily. When Emily, a slightly overweight and shy budding reporter gets fired from her job, she stumbles into the world of phone sex. With her soft, breathy voice, Emily can forget about her weight, forget about guys acting like she is invisible, and make some good money on top of it. But when Emily attrac...more

I really loved this book. An author I sort of "stalk" on here mentioned he had picked up this book, and from the premise, I expected this to be a fair amount spicier, but no matter, it was so adorable.

I very much enjoyed the main character, Emily. She's fun and relate-able and perhaps a bit goofy, but not a total bubblehead like some amateur sleuths who you wonder how they managed to get to adulthood alive. I certainly learned a lot about a career as a "phone actress."

Her love interest sounds...more

I loved this book!!

Very fun and funny! The story never slowed down and the characters were all very distinct and lovable. I personally was amazed that for the first time in a long time, I guessed the wrong suspect to be the murderer. Major kudos for being unpredictable. (I'm crazy good at guessing, surprises, twists, etc)

Emily does work as a Phone Sex Operator, but nothing ever gets gross or unclassy. In fact, this book is EXTREMELY tame considering her line of work. Every time work is mentioned...more

Phone Kitten
by Marika Christian

In the mood for a lighthearted mystery with a little romance on the side? Check out Marika Christian's PHONE KITTEN.

Christian introduces Emily Winters, an imperfect but perfectly lovable character. Emily is a self-proclaimed Chub and accustomed to going unnoticed. When she is fired from her job as a copy clerk for a large newspaper, she needs to find work fast and signs on as a phone sex operator.

Emily's life begins to change when Emily discovers that as Peyton, h...more

I am a firm believer in the fun mystery, and love it when a book makes me humiliate myself by laughing out loud in public places. Marika Christian's "Phone Kitten" is just such a book - so consider yourself warned if you're reading on the bus.

Emily is a self-proclaimed "chub" - a girl with curves who is used to being invisible to everyone around her. When her career takes a turn for the unemployed, she finds she has a talent in her voice, and joins a phone sex company as "Peyton." Peyton is frec...more

Emily or Emma as the clueless men she encounters is an attractive but, Rubinesque young lady with a clerk job at St. Pete Times and even though she made more money working for a temp agency, her life long ambition is to be a writer. After ten months as a copy clerk, she had an audience with the paper's editor and showed him a perspective column she had written detailing her efforts to change her life by dieting and working out with a trainer, thinking it might make a good special interest column...more

So.much.fun.

This was an Amazon freebie. Full price is just 99 cents.

Fresh premise, good writing. It made me laugh. A lot.

It did not rely on profanities. It could be a bit outrageous, but the ridiculous was done for humor, not shock value.

I am assuming this is a self-pub. There were a few wrong words, "costumers" instead of "consumer" is the one that comes to mind, but I do remember that happening at least two other times.
There were a few missing words and a few words that just plain didn't belon...more

3.5 stars,

Let me start off by saying that this is unlike anything else i've ever read. It was unique in so many ways, never have I read a chick lit book regarding a women who made her living as a "phone kitten", aka a sex operater. She decides upon one of her customers deaths that she needs to solve his murder, esp. because she happened to run into him the night of his death, and was one of the last people to see him alive. This book kept me on my toes, and was down-right hilarious.

I loved the...more

I really enjoyed this book. It was a nice light read and humorous.

Emily is a tad bit overweight and being so, likes to be invisible. She works for a local newspaper and aspires to one day be a writer. When a co-worker and someone she thought was a friend, steals an article Emily wrote, Emily brings it to the attention of their boss. However, Emily is the one that loses her job.

After searching the newspaper want ads, Emily takes a job as a "phone kitten". She finds she is really good at making...more

I'd like to rate this 3.5 but that's not an option. :)

I liked Emily's "never give up" attitude but really didn't think her sleuthing was a great idea. Her occasional mentions of finding evidence and then handing it over to the police made me think she'd never seen even a single episode of a cop show - taking evidence out of its original place makes it useless!

There were quite a few grammar mistakes and strange sentences, and even a spot with a question mark instead of a word, which I did find d...more

In spite of a problem with typos and proofing errors, primarily missing “little” words (of, a, and such) enough to cause me to trip over sentences as I was reading, this is a fun story. The main character, Emily, is fun, humorous, and much more likeable (to both the reader and other characters) than she would think, given her self-esteem issues. Emily’s friends, especially the gay couple who run one of her favorite restaurants and her love interest, are all entertaining characters who add a lot...more

This book was a blast! I just loved it. It's a cozy mystery with a bit of chick lit thrown in. Emily Winters is an aspiring journalist who, after losing her not-so-fantastic job at a newspaper, ends up working as a phone actress, aka phone sex operator. The pay is great and the work not so bad but what she really wants is to write for a paper. She thinks solving the murder of one of her clients is her ticket and turns into Nancy Drew. Emily is a hoot. She does some outrageous things trying to so...more

This book was an unexpected pleasant surprise. I got it for free when Amazon was promoting it, along with a hundred other books that I'll be sure to take me with when I fall down a deep well with an outlet and my Kindle.

The premise is silly: A woman takes a job as a phone-sex operator, and ends up meeting one of her clients (sorta accidentally) the night he is murdered. Emily puts her Nancy Drew hat on and tries to solve the case, hoping to write a story that will get her a job at the local news...more

Despite the title no actual sex occurs in this book. Emily is a down on her luck phone sex operator whose customer ends up dead. In order to get her dream job at the newspaper she becomes an amateur sleuth to solve the crime. Little does she know her new boyfriend is a detective on the case. Rick is a nice guy that can see the real Emily an looks pas her chubby-ness to see her try beauty. I really like his character though he was a supporting act for sure. Loved Craige and Dennis, they added com...more

To my surprise, I really liked this one. Like the reviews said, it's not nearly as explicit as you'd expect. Emily did a great job of growing as a character in her own right, and she had an interesting cast of characters backing her up. I liked the natural sense of humor to the book, and could really relate to her throughout the book, both in her awkward approach to romance and to her approach to life in general. The mystery was great as well. I kinda figured out the culprit before Emily did, bu...more

LOVED it! Hence why I stayed up reading it instead of getting to bed early knowing I had to wake up early... Having experienced my own moments of invisible chubbiness, I really connected with Emily. She's so spunky, and just honest about who she is. I was expecting more of a romance novel, and obviously could have done with more steamy Rick/Emily scenes :), thus the story really surprised me and kept me intrigued. And I don't know if I'm naive, but I didn't guess the ending -- but it wasn't b/c...more

Liked it. Almost really liked it, but that might be pushing it. Thoroughly enjoyed it. But three stars looks so small for something that could make me laugh.
Here's the scoop. I needed fluff. My brain was full of packing and moving and work and non-stop STUFF. So, I borrowed this either via Overdrive or my Amazon account. It was the little mental escape I needed. NOT high literature AT ALL. But it helped me quiet my brain from the spinning it had been doing when I would attempt sleep at night an...more

Phone Kitten. Yep, it's about a girl who ends up working on a phone sex line. I wasn't sure how the author would handle the phone sex scenes without being too graphic. She handled it perfectly!

The opening scene was catching and the characters were fun! I wasn't sure if the "History Hottie" was a good guy or a bad guy for most of the book. (I'm not telling. You have to read it yourself!) ;)In fact, the whole mystery was intriguing and I was kept guessing until the end.

The book was full of action...more

I have a confession to make. I was ready to give up on Chick Lit. The last few that I read were ok, but nothing that I was too excited about. I have another confession to make. When I started Phone Kitten I was not sure that I was going to be any more excited with it than the last few. I am happy to report that I was so so wrong. The premise of this one had me the most worried. How are you going to write about a phone sex operator and not make it raunchy? For starters this book is to me more abo...more

This book was a great free grab for my Kindle. I thought it was really funny and fast paced. The story was a little unbelievable but it is written in a way that you can believe it. I agree with other readers the the summary kind of ruins a major plot point of Emily's boyfriends occupation. I did wish that Emily was a little more positive about herself, the self-loathing kind of got old but I understand where Christian was coming from. I had hoped that Emily would gain some confidence by the end...more

This was a cute fast read. I didn't like how Emily constantly repeated stuff about her weight and how no one would like her. She had too much healthy self esteem for that.

The book did have some choppy moments. Perhaps a better editor would fix that.

Over all I liked this book. Just what I want in a light read. I just wish Emily was a bit more accepting of her role as a Phone sex kitten. It just seemed as if the reader is not Vanilla than you are a pervert. This is 2011 let your freak flag fly.

Chose this book out of previously purchased Kindle goodies because I thought it would be spicy. Turns out to be more chick-lit hilarious than spicy despite the fact that Emily loses her job at a newspaper and turns to being a phone sex operator to pay for rent and school. Loved her best friends and boyfriend. Laughed several times throughout the book and enjoyed the murder mystery. Doubt this will be a series, but would read more by this author.

Despite the need for a little editing, I really enjoyed this book. There were a few parallels to the Stephanie Plum series, but Phone Kitten was unique in its own way. There was nothing vulgar about it at all. I liked the main character a lot. She is someone I could see myself being friends with. Some of the humor felt like the author was trying a little too hard but it was ok. It was a great light read, perfect for the summer.

I am a new reader to the female detective genre. As an introduction, to the genre, I found "Phone Kitty" an entertaining easy read. The plot moved along nicely, with only a spot or two where it felt sluggish. The protagonist was relatable and developed. There are a few humorous sections that made me laugh out loud. Overall, this is a well crafted story with an interesting premise, enjoyable characters, and fun to read.

This book was amazingly cute and funny. It was an easy read, I could see taking this with me to the beach and enjoying it very much. I normally am not a huge fan of chick-lit, but this was a great book. Emily is a loveable character, so easy to relate to. Any girl that's felt 'invisible' will identify with Emily. I loved the author's writing style, she just flows from thing to thing without getting mired down in details. I love authors that get to the point. I'd definitely read anything else she...more

A fun book that is more G-rated than one would expect. The overall idea of journalist wanna-be urns into phone-sex actress investigating a murder of one of her clients feels cliched to me. It's another book in the whole, "fat girl can have a boyfriend and come out of her shell" meme. Still, the characters are quirky in a Carl Hiaasen-like way, which keeps you engaged for most of the book. A fun beach read.

A stellar debut from Marika Christian incorporating the world of phone sex with a murder mystery. Phone actress, Emily Summers, takes it upon herself to solve the crime of the murder of one of her most frequent callers; but soon eneough she finds herself in more danger than maybe even Nancy Drew can handle. Meeting a lot of crazy, kooky and just suspicious characters on her path, Jim Alexander's killer could be anyone. To top of all the drama, Emily's met a guy she really likes, but when he turn...more
