Lindsey Kelk is best known for her I Heart series; a trio of books adored by many chick lit readers. I read I Heart New York a few years ago and enjoyed the witty style of writing, but there was something about the plot that didn’t click with me. I found it quite unrealistic, and perhaps a bit too light and sugary, so I never got round to reading the rest of the series.

Even so, I still felt like Kelk was an author to look out for, and the synopsis for The Single Girl’s To-Do List caught my attention while on a hunt for summer reading. As far as holiday companions go, this turned out to be a great one.

The protagonist, Rachel, is dumped by her long-term boyfriend and is faced with single life for the first time in years. Her best friends, Emelie and Matthew, are immediately on hand (and remain there, 24-7) to help her deal with the break up, and they soon come up with a plan to help mend her broken heart. Rachel is well-known for writing lists (I’m firmly with her on that one: there are approximately six To-Do lists floating around in my handbag right now) and so the friends put her obsessive tendencies to good use, creating a Single Girl’s To-Do list. Rachel must achieve each point on the list to celebrate her singledom: get a makeover, travel somewhere, go on a date, get a tattoo, and so on.

The three main characters are fantastic. Rachel is likeable from the start, but Emelie and Matthew almost steal the show – they make a fabulous supporting cast, and the trio work perfectly. Their friendship, along with Rachel’s reaction to her break up, make this story feel very real. If you’ve ever been dumped you’ll relate to Rachel’s feelings, and even though some of the points on the To-Do were a little adventurous, Kelk has created characters that make you believe it’s all possible. Partly because they spend a lot of the early days getting ridiculously drunk and waking up to a deathly hangover. Which is definitely what I would do in such a situation.

One little niggly complaint? I didn’t like the way the characters used the word ‘slag’. That word makes me cringe.

The Single Girl’s To-Do List is a light read, but a heartwarming one. At a few points during the book I thought I knew how things would turn out, but I was wrong. I loved the ending, and am so glad that the predictable rom-com storyline I expected wasn’t quite right. This is a book about how your friends are the most important people in your life, and how there is absolutely nothing wrong with being ‘alone’… because if you’ve got friends, you’re never really alone. It proves that single life can be great, and that you don’t need a relationship to be happy with your life.

My mother bought this book for me as a gift knowing that I share the same OCD tendencies to make to do lists as main character in this novel, Rachel. I was a bit hesitant about reading it though as although I'd loved Kelk's earlier novel, I Heart New York, I hadn't been quite so enamoured by I Heart Hollywood. I'd been having a bit of a dry spell where books were concerned, but I really enjoyed this book. I would have given this book 4 stars, it's just little things that kinda upset me. It might only be in the edition I was reading but I found a few typos and while it's not that big of a deal I still had to stop and wonder at it. (Unless those typos were British slang, but I'm still convinced snary was meant to be snarky).

I have read all of Lindsey Kelk’s books including her kindle book Jenny Lopez Has A Bad Week, and I have enjoyed every one of them. While I have patiently been waiting for the new I Heart book to come out I then heard that Lindsey Kelk was releasing another book called A Single Girls To Do List. Rachel Summers s’est installée dans une routine dans son couple, ne faisant plus très attention à elle. Mais après 5 ans de vie commune c’est un peu difficile de changer tout ce qu’elle est. Pourtant elle se voit déjà mariée avec cet homme, Simon, avoir des enfants et continuer sa vie avec lui. Mais son rêve se fragilisera quand du jour au lendemain, il lui demande de faire une pause, puis la quitte de la pire des façons. C’était assez triste de voir la manière dont il la traite, alors qu’elle ne pense qu’à lui et n’aime que lui. Elle voudrait tout faire pour le récupérer, pour qu’il comprenne l’erreur qu’il a faite en la quittant, mais en vain. Il faut dire qu’il n’y va pas de main morte, il la traite de tous les noms, lui explique qu’elle n’est pas la femme de sa vie et qu’elle est ennuyeuse et inintéressante. Cette histoire va complètement détruire la vie de Rachel, elle va commencer à douter d’elle-même, à se demander comment elle va bien pouvoir vivre en tant que célibataire, chose qu’elle n’a jamais tentée auparavant. Heureusement pour elle, elle sera entourée continuellement par ses amis qui feront tout pour la remettre dans le droit chemin. Emelie et Matthew sont deux personnes fantastiques, ils vont rester auprès d’elle, l’aider à remonter la pente. On ne peut que les adorer tous les deux et espérer que nos propres amis seraient prêts à faire de même dans une telle situation.

Rachel essaie de faire de son mieux, retourne même au travail mais rien ne se passe comme prévu et se fait renvoyer par son patron, le sexy Dan. Avec un TOC qui l’oblige à faire des listes chaque jour pour savoir ce qu’elle peut faire, elle réalise avec l’aide de ses amis, une liste de 10 choses à faire pour bien montrer qu’elle est célibataire. 10 choses complètement folles qui lui tiennent finalement très à cœur et qu’elle est prête à réaliser. Des choses qui la changeront d’ailleurs radicalement, qui l’aideront à avoir confiance en elle, et à se prendre en charge toute seule.

J’ai adoré ce roman, il se lit vraiment tout seul. Rachel est un personnage que j’ai adoré suivre, c’est très facile de la comprendre et de l’apprécier. On est triste pour elle, on est heureuse pour elle, et on aimerait aussi parfois lui faire comprendre les choses qu’elle ne réalise pas. Sa liste lui fera faire des choses qu’elle n’aurait jamais osé réaliser auparavant, et c’était agréable de la voir évoluer et changer tout au long de l’histoire. Il arrive souvent que l’héroïne de ce genre de livre soit assez niaise et nunuche, mais ce n’est pas le cas ici, Rachel est intelligente, déterminée et belle. En plus de cela on découvre sa famille et ses amis qui sont tous hauts en couleurs. J’attendais avec impatience la confrontation avec Simon, et je n’ai pas été déçue. J’étais contente qu’elle ne passe pas la moitié du livre à se morfondre sur elle-même et sur sa relation perdue, mais qu’elle comprenne que finalement, il n’était pas pour elle.

C’était donc un très bon roman, et je pense que si j’ai l’occasion je lirai d’autres livres de cette auteure.(less)

My first 5 star review of 2012 and I now have another favorite author in the chicklit genre. Can't believe I'd never read anything by Lindsey Kelk before. Her style reminds me a bit of Marian Keyes in the earlier years, like Last Chance Saloon and Sushi for Beginners, but I digress.

The Single Girl's To-Do List was definitely a page turner. The writing flowed incredibly well and never while I was reading did I get bored, antsy or want to skip ahead.

I think this is what every woman (or at least I) dream of.
Completely taking charge or your life and changing it for the better!
I lived vicariously through the main character. I would love to get a new hair do and make up (for free, no less), spend a fortune on a new wardrobe (I seriously need new clothes - this post baby body needs some new garments!), start kicking ass and taking names, purchase and actually WEAR expensive lingerie, and travel with my best friends on a whim.

I first got to know more about Lindsey Kelk her books by the I heart series. The more stories I read from her, the more I liked her style of writting. Very easy to read, a real pageturner writter that gives each book the right amount of humor to keep you wanting for more.

I found the story a bit hard to follow at first cause of the brit slangs and huge amount of pop culture references. So Google will come in handy.

Hilarious, gorgeous, honest and heart-breakingly sad. I loved every word on every page. This isn't a book where you want to skip even one sentence. Rachel is such a real girl in the real-wide-world. A really enjoyable chick lit read.
The only reason it didn't quite make 4 stars for me was because I felt like it slowed down a bit in the second half of the book and there wasn't enough of the romantic interest.
The first half of the book was very fast paced and laugh out loud funny, had trouble putting it down. The second half of the book, while still funny, seemed to slow down a bit. I felt like I knew exactly where the story was going and I knew by that time that the mai...more

The novel is so feminist as Rachel stood up for herself and changed her ways. It was boring until the almost last parts because I was only waiting for what will happen to her relationship with somebody. There was a lot of extras and stuff that made it longer but those things just bored me.
Matthew and Em were really best portrayed as bestfriends for someone who has gone heartbroken. Right? Who couldn't agree?

i loved this book, absofuckinglutely loved it. I realized how long it has been since i said something like this in a review....which makes me even happier :D
Okay plot wise, it wasn't anything new. The whole boy-dumps-girl-girl-changes-her-life-towards-a-better-her has all been done before, over and over again. Still, not the worst thing that you can read about.
