For some time now I have been reading a lot about Bulgakov and his books on Kaggsy’s bookish ramblings – her enthusiasm for him made me want to read some of his work. I wasn’t sure which of his novels I would attempt first, but when I came across a copy of this very slight novel in the library I thought it might be a good one to start with.
The Fatal Eggs is a novel which is a kind of sci-fi satire on Stalinist Russia (right out of my comfort zone really). I took the book away with me

Great short satire. I'm told this isn't Bulgakov's best work. It really has me enthusiastic about the rest.

This was quite awesome. I'm so asleep -_-

EDIT: What I liked about this book was that the main character was a legitimate misanthropist. He was a man who was more concerned with his scholarly labours than the ways in which men could use them to help themselves. I loved how he was an acrid and harsh professor to his students, I like that people feared him and that he failed everyone. In short, he's someone I liked a lot. He was a confident man on the brink of greatness. Unfortunately the vapid min

Not Bulgakov's best work (see The Master and Margarita), but still interesting.
It's an out-and-out sci-fi story, with a mad scientist, a mysterious (life not death) ray, mutated creatures, etc.
There's also a satirical poke at the USSR that's less overt than those in Master & Margarita or Heart of a Dog.
The ending is a massive copout (the last chapter is called "A Frozen Deus Ex Machina," so I don't really feel like saying it is insufficient as an ending is a spoiler. It reads like Bulgakov m

The Russian way of British humour.
This author is widely known for "Master and Margarita" but I think he did his best in short novels such as this one and "Heart of a Dog".

I particularly liked how Bulgakov chose the way of simplicity on writing this kind of sci-fi political satire.
There is any unnecessary word in The Fatal Eggs and I felt the pleasure of the narrator rising up from every single sentence with an effect as much irresistible as in masterpieces like Voltaire's "Candide".

Plus, when B

I really wanted to love this, but too many issues got in the way. First is either the translation or the style that Bulgakov employs. It's manic, jumbled, just too much. It feels like he was trying to overwhelm the reader or was simply over-stating everything. And the characters are similar to the language. There is no character in the story that is anything more than a thin, transparent cartoon. This would have been interesting if these thin personalities could be compared against other more we ...more

I agree with what Jennie says below -- "more sci fi than magical realism." This was a real disappointment, as I was quite excited to come across this little known work when Hesperus Press reissued it. I guess no author should be expected to maintain the standard set by a brilliant work like Master and Margarita, especially in such a comparatively short piece, but still ... I was expecting something more than this rather thin, one-note sketch on "mad science" as metaphor for corrupt system. Maybe ...more

Subversive as hell, if a bit immature, early flashes of the author’s brilliance are on display in this even more deadly and disgusting riff on H.G. Well’s Food of the Gods as the Soviet bureaucracy manages to unleash a Sci-Fi apocalypse in response to a chicken shortage. Only Russians + Communism could produce such simultaneously banal and bizarre situations, populated by both erstwhile comrades and reptilian apparatchiks. Too bad a watered-down ending spoils this brutal critique upon the worker ...more

Bulgakov revels in cynical absurdism in this fun, quick little comic scifi-cum-horror. It's a social and political satire of 1920s Russia of course (this is Bulgakov after all) and he may draw his longest knives for the media, though pretty much every institution gets a fair drubbing. Though his real target may actually be crowds in general - in this novel crowds, tend to be ignorant, indolent, hysterical and prone to panic, and in the end vengeful and bloodthirsty. Bulgakov doesn't have much fa ...more

I read this after "The Heart of a Dog", and for anyone who is doing the same, they might find the change in tone somewhat surprising. It's not the light-hearted affair that book is -- there are some much darker consequences to the events that happen here. For that reason, perhaps, I never quite enjoyed it as much as his other works.

Still, it's got the usual wit and observation of Bulgakov, and memorable characters abound. Perhaps I would say that it's not as developed as "The Heart of a Dog"; th

A while back, I read The Master And Margarita, and liked it a lot, so I thought I’d try this short science-fiction novel from Bulgakov about an eccentric scientist who discovers a mysterious light ray that can accelerate growth in fertilized eggs, after which everyone from journalists to foreign agents try to acquire the technology for their own use – and of course things go wrong. It’s meant to be political satire, and like lots of Russian satire, some of it is lost in translation, but even as ...more

This isn't science fiction, it is political satire, very entertaining. This translation is somewhat awkward, wish I could try a different one.

I enjoyed the premise, and I am a fan of Bulgakov, but this book does read as a somewhat immature novel. The imagery was fairly obvious. Still, it was an interesting and somewhat prophetic read. That said, "Heart of a Dog" is far better.

This translation is not very good. It does not flow very well, and seems rather awkward at times. Having read several other translations of Bulgakov, I am fairly sure that this awkwardness is not a function of Bulgakov's style, but rather, has to do with the tran

A scientist's discovery of a ray that increases the growth and reproduction rate of animals leads to disaster when it is unwisely taken out of the laboratory in an attempt to feed the country.

The Fatal Eggs is obviously a satirical metaphor for the experience of Russia, but I don't think I understood it that well. Communism is something that should have been cautiously experimented with, but was seized upon by cruder and more urgent men?

At least I can appreciate the detail of early revolutionar
