I'm in FREAKING LURV with Shifting!
With an ending like that, there HAS to be a companion novel. I mean it Bethany, you MUST write one! I need more Maggie Mae and Bridger <3

*spoilers*

My only real problem can be summed up in three words: Bridger. O. Connell.
A patronising, shallow, faithless douche if ever there was one. For the greater part of the story he's either ignoring poor Maggie May or leading her on, and then, when he finally does profess his undying (ha.) love for the girl; he turns on her almost immediately.
Aaand then he shoots her. Lovely.
No no, it's okay though-he didn't shoot to kill, so you forgive him right Maggie? Righ More...

The Review: What is with the snakes in the girls hair? Or around the neck? It's creepy and eerie, yet it drew me to pick up SHIFTING which I am grateful for.

<spoiler>SHIFTING by Bethany Wiggins is a beautifully written debut novel that is descriptive writing filled with mythology and romance breathing out through the pages.

With Navajo mythology and suspenseful crammed pack action and mystery- SHIFTING is another great paranormal YA book that will keep readers in t More...

Shifting has an alluring blend of Native American lore, sizzling romance and a beautiful New Mexico setting that made it hard for me to put this captivating story down. Bethany is a brilliant story teller. She mesmerized with her ability to create and bring her story to life through a vivid setting and richly detailed mythology. She intertwines the two together flawlessly. She not only engaged me with her story line, but she had me connecting with her characters from the get go.

I’m quite shocked at how much I enjoyed Shifting. After attempting to read numerous books and failing to really get into any of them, I picked up Shifting and expected to put it back down, just like all the others. But I couldn’t, because from the first chapter, I was drawn in.

I loved the characters. Maggie was interesting, although a bit too forgiving, and Bridger was engaging, if a bit arrogant. But flawed characters are believable characters. Their relationship had me on the edge More...

This book was a random selection for me, I really love shifters they are actually my first favorite supernatural characters. I think it stems from my love of Beauty and The Beast. Maggie Mae and Bridger told such a pretty story, I love New Mexico anyway, I'm like in love with the desert I think that stems from my love of Roswell (The TV show).. Something about that part of the country just appeals to me. I had no idea where Bridger was coming from at times, he was a total mystery, and Maggie was More...

In the aftermath of reading Bethany Wiggins "Shifting," it makes me wish that there were far more offerings in YA literature that would derive from different cultural groups, because the product of such would make for not only fascinating stories that spark the imagination, but also incorporate examinations/spotlights of characters of variant backgrounds. I love a good shapeshifter story, and I appreciated the fact that Wiggins uses touches of Navajo legend to create the backdrop of th More...

Loved it! Loved every sentence and every word. Loved Bridger. Loved Maggie Mae. Loved Mrs. Carpenter. I cried for Maggie when she got bullied. My heart swelled every time Bridger looked at her like he couldn't get enough.

She's been through so much and she could be truly broken but she's so tough. I adore Maggie Mae.

My only gripe with this book is that her friendship with Yana seemed to disappear after they graduated.

After reading that a GoodReads friend LOVED this book, I have been anxious to get my hands on a copy. Unfortunately, none of the libraries I have access to carry it. I love owning books, but typically only buy them when I find a great deal. However, when I got a gift card to B&N, I couldn't resist buying Shifting.

Maggie Mae has been in the foster care system since she was five-years-old, transferred from home to home (some good, some very bad). The frequency of the transfers increase More...

I LOVED this book SO much ! Bethany is an amazing author full of new ideas , and built up this book amazingly. I adored Magie Mae's character, and Bridger was just to die for. <3 There has to be a second one, or I might go through a serious state of depression. Haha, but seriously , one of the best reads ever!

This was a pretty good book. The plot was good, the characters were pretty good (though at times I found Bridger kind of fickle and annoying), but there was a factual error in the book I just could not let pass. So, at several points in the book Maggie shifts into a cheetah. At first I thought, "GREAT! I LOVE cheetahs!" (Thus me noticing this error, but anyone, regardless of their opinion of cheetahs, should know this. And if she is going to use animals, research them, for goodness' sa More...

Looking for a perfect Halloween book? Pick Shifting up. Maggie has been shifted from one foster family to another. She has no stability in her life and no guidance. When she comes to Silver City, she figures her stay will not be for long. However, her new foster "parent" is much more forceful and willing to let the arrangement work. As she slowly adjusts to the town, she experiences quite a few disturbing, somewhat alarming events. Will Maggie be able to stay in Silver City?

Shifting, by Bethany Wiggins, is one of those books that I’m not entirely sure why I wanted to read it. Looking at it now nothing about the description (or the cover of the ARC) seems as if it would be appealing to me, personally.

I liked that Shifting worked in Navajo legends. Or, at least, I assume it did because it claims to. I don’t actually know anything about Navajo so, I cannot corroborate anything on that front. Either way, it’s something I don’t see too much of in young adult More...

SHIFTING is a riveting and magical novel that had me glued to the pages for hours! The Navajo legends that are included in the story were fresh and something I haven't seen done in the YA genre before. However, the one thing that irked me was the romance between the two characters. Frustrating and cliched, it is your typical girl meets boy, girl falls for boy, girl denies that she is falling for boy, and boy leads her on romance. While really irritating, the mythology and plot line make up for i More...

Let's face it, I'm a sucker for anything set in New Mexico. I love this state more than any other, so it's a pretty good guess that if it even mentions NM in passing, I'm going to like it at least a little.

But really, even if I wasn't so fan-girly over my state, I still would have enjoyed Bethany Wiggins' debut novel, Shifting. It's fast-paced, thrilling, and original, and I couldn't put it down.

In Shifting, we meet Maggie Mae, a foster child who has been shuffled from h More...

This was a really good book--not great literature, but not every book needs to be. As soon as I read the synopsis and reviews, I had a sneaking suspicion that this would join the ranks of good books with stupid-ass covers that would prevent almost anyone from picking it up and that have nothing at all to do with the contents. I always wonder what it is that makes authors agree to this (if indeed they're granted even that power); it must be like the office of president--every candidate has grand More...

Wowza, did I enjoy this book! Holy crap it is amazing! I'm going to be honest, I hadn't heard of this book at all before I bought it at B&N a few weeks ago because the cover was really cool and the summary on the dust jacket really grabbed my attention. I'm a firm believer in supporting new writers and talent and so, "Shifting", with it's beautiful cover and promising premise was a must read. Bethany Wiggins truly builds a unique and interesting story about a nearly eighteen year old foster girl, Maggie, who has bounced from home to home while racking up run-ins with the law and a juvenile record. But it's not her fault. She can't help the strange things that happen to her on full moon nights and the consequences it brings. When she m More...

Seventeen year old Maggie Mae Mortensen has a problem: she’s been in 12 foster homes and has had nearly 20 arrests for indecent exposure. She is taken from Albuquerque to a new foster home in Silver City, New Mexico and starts a new school for the last few months of high school. Immediately, she is drawn to handsome, rich, and popular Bridger O’Connell. But she can’t control her problem: she’s a shape shifter. Every month at the full moon, she turns into an animal. That’s why she’s found naked i More...

I was surprised at how much I liked this book. Being a 31-year-old male, I don't quite fit into the intended demographic, but I had a very hard time putting the book down. I was even in the middle of reading EXECUTIVE POWER by Vince Flynn that I stopped to read the ARC of SHIFTING. I love the Vince Flynn books a ton, but I had no desire to return to where I left off. I was too captivated by SHIFTING.

"Where in the world did you come from? I thought. Shash turned and looked at me over his shoulder, tail wagging. Waiting for me to follow.
We ran through the town and back into the country. We wound our way through the bushes in a steady direction-home- when I smelled something that made me stop dead. Primitive instinct overtook all human control: Evil-RUN!

Maggie Mae is just seventeen and starting all over again in her thirteenth foster home. She’s been neglected, abused, passed off when her foster parents got tired of her and taken away because she keeps getting arrested for indecent exposure. This time, she’s being placed with the elderly Mrs. Carpenter in a remote New Mexico town and if there’s something worse than a square peg in a round hole, she’s it. With her scruffy hand-me-down clothes and black dyed hair, there are literally less than a More...

Read the entire review on my review blog This is only a part of it.

Shifting was a very well written book with a moving plot line and captivating characters. For one, the plot line incorporated a Navajo myth about the Skinwalkers. They are basically people who gave up there souls for the ability to change into an animal by wearing it's skin. I've only read one book with the same myth incorporated into it so, to me, it's a relatively original idea to use in a book. Anyway, not only is More...

This is by far the best novel I've read all year. Maggie Mae is a character that you can't help but fall in love with. From the first page, she is extremely endearing, and you are overcome with the need to know her story. She's a foster child who has been bounced around within the system in Albuquerque, NM. After multiple arrests for indecent exposure, she gets transferred to Mr. Petersen's (her social worker) mother's home in Silver City, NM. Mrs. Carpenter, her new foster mother, is a lovable More...

Maggie Mae has been arrested multiple times for indecent exposure. This has contributed to her bouncing from foster home to foster home. She is so close to being 18 and graduating high school, maybe she can make it at this new home, with the mother of her therapist. Things go much smoother when her new foster mother learns her secret, Maggie shifts into animals every full moon, and it shreds any clothes she was wearing. There's a boy at her school that she likes too, but to make things even more More...
