Why I am surprised that I liked this book so much? Because I thought I had fallen prey to the pretty cover. Yes it's so hard to resist them! But Wiggins knows how to write and hello shapeshifiting. You can never have enough of that.
Maggie Mae is an orphan. She has been moved around countless times from foster home to foster home. Lately things have been worse since she has been having run-ins with the police for indecent exposure. What no one knows is that Maggie can't help it because she is a s...more

Oh, that was painful. It started out bloody freaking awesome, but of course the love interest has to ruin everything.
Review to come soon. After I'm done raging.
Actual Review
The beginning of the book started out amazingly good; a unique setting, a cool heroine, shapeshifters, etc.
Then the love interest came in.
Maggie Mae has been to twelve different foster homes in her past life. In Silver City, New Mexico, she may have found the perfect home in an old farmhouse with a kind old woman named Mr...more

My only real problem can be summed up in three words: Bridger. O. Connell.
A patronising, shallow, faithless douche if ever there was one. For the greater part of the story he's either ignoring poor Maggie May or leading her on, and then, when he finally does profess his undying (ha.) love for the girl; he turns on her almost immediately.
Aaand then he shoots her. Lovely.
No no, it's okay though-he didn't shoot to kill, so you forgive him right Maggie? Right?
Oh you should, he's a keeper...more

Shifting has an alluring blend of Native American lore, sizzling romance and a beautiful New Mexico setting that made it hard for me to put this captivating story down. Bethany is a brilliant story teller. She mesmerized with her ability to create and bring her story to life through a vivid setting and richly detailed mythology. She intertwines the two together flawlessly. She not only engaged me with her story line, but she had me connecting with her characters from the get go.

I’m quite shocked at how much I enjoyed Shifting. After attempting to read numerous books and failing to really get into any of them, I picked up Shifting and expected to put it back down, just like all the others. But I couldn’t, because from the first chapter, I was drawn in.
I loved the characters. Maggie was interesting, although a bit too forgiving, and Bridger was engaging, if a bit arrogant. But flawed characters are believable characters. Their relationship had me on the edge of my seat f...more

The Review: What is with the snakes in the girls hair? Or around the neck? It's creepy and eerie, yet it drew me to pick up SHIFTING which I am grateful for.
SHIFTING by Bethany Wiggins is a beautifully written debut novel that is descriptive writing filled with mythology and romance breathing out through the pages.
With Navajo mythology and suspenseful crammed pack action and mystery- SHIFTING is another great paranormal YA book that will keep readers in the dark and slowly go into the light. The...more

I enjoyed this book more than I expected to--the YA market is so inundated with paranormal stories right now that I was a little hesitant to pick up another story about a girl who can shapeshift. However, I think this story has a freshness to it, largely because the shapeshifting mythology is rooted in Navajo legend, rather than having the paranormal stuff rooted in more common European folklore. The story begins when Maggie Mae is moved to yet another foster home, in Silver City, New Mexico, ju...more

The book Shifting was one of the best books I've read yet. I couldn't put the book down. I would give the book a 9 out of 10 because, although it wasn't my favorite, it was deffinatly on my top 10. Bethany Wiggins tells an awesome story about a foster girl named Magdalene Mae aka Maggie Mae as she goes through foster homes after foster homes since she was five. And to top it all off, she's been changing into an animal in the las...more

Oh mah goodness gracious, this was unexpectedly enjoyable! I've been so wary of YA books over time because most tend to drag, and be stuffed full of tiresome tropes, but this little gem was SO FRESH, and had some near-flawless storytelling! I literally read this in two sittings in one day (because after first sitting, I had to go to work, boo!), and found myself thinking about it, and even missing it, after I was finished.

This book was a random selection for me, I really love shifters they are actually my first favorite supernatural characters. I think it stems from my love of Beauty and The Beast. Maggie Mae and Bridger told such a pretty story, I love New Mexico anyway, I'm like in love with the desert I think that stems from my love of Roswell (The TV show).. Something about that part of the country just appeals to me. I had no idea where Bridger was coming from at times, he was a total mystery, and Maggie was...more
This book is fantastic! There is so much good in this book and almost zero bad (and if there was, it was there for a reason, making it good.) This book covers a lot of different themes, from accepting yourself, to bullying. It's fun and Maggie Mae's narration is wonderful.
Maggie Mae is a shifter. Kind of like a werewolf, but not. She doesn't know why it happens, or how it came to be, but she's accepted that it's a part of her. Maggie Mae is also an orphan and she's very familiar with foster care...more

Shifting was a very well written book with a moving plot line and captivating characters. For one, the plot line incorporated a Navajo myth about the Skinwalkers. They are basically people who gave up there souls for the ability to change into an animal by wearing it's skin. I've only read one book with the same myth incorporated into it so, to me, it's a relatively original idea to use in a book. Anyway, not only is the myth int...more

In the aftermath of reading Bethany Wiggins "Shifting," it makes me wish that there were far more offerings in YA literature that would derive from different cultural groups, because the product of such would make for not only fascinating stories that spark the imagination, but also incorporate examinations/spotlights of characters of variant backgrounds. I love a good shapeshifter story, and I appreciated the fact that Wiggins uses touches of Navajo legend to create the backdrop of this novel....more
Loved it! Loved every sentence and every word. Loved Bridger. Loved Maggie Mae. Loved Mrs. Carpenter. I cried for Maggie when she got bullied. My heart swelled every time Bridger looked at her like he couldn't get enough.
She's been through so much and she could be truly broken but she's so tough. I adore Maggie Mae.
My only gripe with this book is that her friendship with Yana seemed to disappear after they graduated.

I can't believe I only read this now when I had it at my shelf for ages. I guess I was adamant about another YA shifter story but dang this book was awesome! I had to get use to the names tho especially the protagonist...come on, Maggie Mae!? I thought we were heading to the Mary Sue territory with her another reason I was iffy about reading this book!? But I'm glad I read Shifting, I love Maggie and Bridger!:)
After reading that a GoodReads friend LOVED this book, I have been anxious to get my hands on a copy. Unfortunately, none of the libraries I have access to carry it. I love owning books, but typically only buy them when I find a great deal. However, when I got a gift card to B&N, I couldn't resist buying Shifting.

I LOVED this book SO much ! Bethany is an amazing author full of new ideas , and built up this book amazingly. I adored Magie Mae's character, and Bridger was just to die for. <3 There has to be a second one, or I might go through a serious state of depression. Haha, but seriously , one of the best reads ever!

I found myself totally engrossed in this novel from the very beginning. I've read the Wolves if Mercy Falls series and the Wolfbane series so I'm familiar with characters changing into wild animals, and I think Bethany Wiggins created characters much more believable than either of the other two. This book answered the questions about how and why where the others left me wondering. Great job, and glad to see this make it into the Whitney finalists. One caution: this is definately YA, not for youn...more
This book was great! I loved the whole concept of it. And I loved Maggie. Her character is rather cool at times. I could easily sympathize with all the hardships she has had to go through. But I wasn't as satisfied with it. I would have rated it 5 stars if it were more complete. What I mean is that even after finishing the whole book, I still have questions unanswered. And I don't think there's a sequel, is there?

An entertaining read that actually ends with this one book and doesn't string you along for years waiting for the other books in the series to be published.

A decent read, though not without its irritating moments. Two and a half stars. Spoilers ahead
My issues:
Bridger O'Connell - Not to say you can't be interested in a culture unless you're full-blooded, but with him running around saying, "I'm Navajo" every three pages, I was kind of disappointed to find out that he was only 1/8th Navajo. Also, I'm curious as to why he couldn't tell his father that Maggie was a Shifter. It certainly would've gotten his dad off his back about dating a girl who wasn...more

Maggie is a regular in the foster system, moving from one place to the next, often with a longer criminal record with many incidents of indecent exposure. What most people don’t realize is she can’t help it, when the full moon is out Maggie can’t control what she turns into. She finally has a chance in Silver City, New Mexico with Mrs. Carpenter, and hopefully a new start with a clean rap sheet. However, the shifting gets worse, more often and less predictable. It’s getting more and more difficu...more
Why did I like this book so much?! I was really sucked in the minute I began to read it, and I think I finished it the next day. It's not destined to be a classic, and it isn't especially original or unusual, yet I admit to finding it completely addictive so for that alone I bestow upon it 5 stars!

4.5 stars...almost a 5.
Recommended for gr. 8 and up.
The narrator, Maggie Mae, is a strong protagonist with a secret. Almost 18, she has grown up in a series of foster homes and does not remember her parents. She has had numerous brushes with the law, including arrests for indecent exposure, and is being given one more chance with a new foster home in a new city. Fortunately her new foster parent is an understanding woman - she soon discovers that Maggie Mae is a shifter who turns into an animal...more

This was a pretty good book. The plot was good, the characters were pretty good (though at times I found Bridger kind of fickle and annoying), but there was a factual error in the book I just could not let pass. So, at several points in the book Maggie shifts into a cheetah. At first I thought, "GREAT! I LOVE cheetahs!" (Thus me noticing this error, but anyone, regardless of their opinion of cheetahs, should know this. And if she is going to use animals, research them, for goodness' sake, and do...more

Bethany Wiggins has always been an avid reader, but not an avid student. Seriously! She failed ninth grade English because she read novels instead of doing her homework. In high school, she sat alone at lunch and read massive hardback fantasy novels (Tad Williams and Robert Jordan anyone?). It wasn't until the end of her senior year that the other students realized she was reading fiction--not the...more
