A clever, breathtaking short story about Shakespeare's birthplace, Stratford, by maybe my favorite American author. How clever is it? James never mentions Shakespeare or Stratford in the story, but clearly has that town in his sights as he mocks--yet also revels in--our obsession with celebrity culture and shlock. Mind you, this story was published in 1902, yet after a lengthy exposition, it is incredibly fresh and timely.

I was born on a little island nested inside a river. It cuts the town in half, I could see it from the bridge separating my island and the town. The river runs fast across countrysides, cornfields and uncharted lands until it ends on a little spring which is actually where it begins.
