This book had kind of a slow start, but once it got going it was an absolute joy to read.
It put me in mind of Mercedes Lackey's early Valdemar books or The Fairy Godmother, tending toward the tone of the latter; there's a mix of conversation, mundane "living life" moments, and fantastical action. Also, like the books I mentioned, a romance story features as central to the plot and a lot of time is spent on it, though it doesn't become the whole story like in Romeo and Juliet.
The ending may com...more

This book is a total fluff book. And I love it to pieces.

As a young teen, I scoured the library for every fantasy book involving dragons. I loved dragon fantasies like some other people like werewolves or vampires (I'm looking at you, Twilight fans!). And some of these books were very silly and fluffy. But they usually didn't have too much romance, because I thought romance was altogether too gooey and distracted too much from the much more important business of fighting monsters and having adv...more

All of you who love science fiction, a fantastic plot, a tear jerking love story, and beautiful imagery and writing all rolled into one... look no further. This series has it all, and Elizabeth Kerner had me hooked within the first page. The tale of Lanen as she follows her dreams to the dragon isle is one that I revisit often. It never fails to invoke the same emotional reaction it always did, appealing to me both as a young adult(when I first read it), and an adult(When I read it the second......more

I picked up this book second hand from a charity shop. I picked it up, examined it, put it down and walked away from it. But I kept thinking about about, so I went back and bought it. It's magic was already working on me.
What magic? Something about the title, the cover, the map, the beginning of the story, the voice of Lanen. They all spoke to me from the beginning, and I was spellbound.
On page 76 came my Great Criticism. I had soaked Lanen into me, and for 76 pages we had followed her, in her...more

Song in the Silence by Elizabeth Kerner is a bardic high fantasy about a young woman believing in legends and finding much more than she ever hoped possible, including adventure, demons, dragons and love of an unexpected variety

There are a lot of dragon stories out there; tons of fantasy and sci-fi fiction about people and dragons, magic, sorcerers, demons, quests. It's pretty basic. But this novel stood out, maybe because I hadn't heard about it before or since I read it. And I really, really liked it.

Lanen Kaelar is a helper on her family's farm...until her father dies and she is set free. Off in search of adventure, accompanied by the roguish Jamie, who essentially raised her, Lanen heads for the coast. In her mind,...more

I have fond memory of this reading, so...I bought a copy from this big posh book store on orchard road in singapore . It was called Kinokuniya or something japanese. The author is not very big. But I had been feeling like a good fantasy book to read. This turned out to be my first fantasy full scale novel that I read. I was majorly fascinated to find out that i was a dragon according to chinese mythology, some crap but hey it's the most revered sign of their zodiac and there is even a festival o...more

So, the ONE thing I didn't like was the romance being way over the top fast. I mean, think Disney Princess fast. Wow. But, otherwise a fascinating book with great bad guys, even scarier bosses of bad guys and so much potential for the future books. I'm awful with series, so I'm betting I won't read the rest (2 more, already published). I also didn't like some things about how it all 'works out', but that's personal preference - I'm guessing most people love that part.
Anyways, B+. Excellent fanta...more

Although this book has gotten a lot of great reviews I didn't really enjoy it. Dragon lovers will probably like it.

Pro ~ Interesting and original mythology and back-story; switching p-o-v between characters helpful plot device

Con - Lots of talk and exposition; introduction of major plot points late in narrative to cover holes in plot; clutter; speeding up switching pov as climax nears is irratating.

Because this writer was so well reviewed I decided to give the whole trilogy a read. Waste of time...more

I like books about dragons. I also liked the main character. The story was nice, simple, thanks to dreams a little predictable. Too much sentimental to my liking.

I was confused with writing style. It begins as memories of old queen, but the author is switching storytellers - that left me confused. I felt disconnection between parts.

And still, it was worth to read.

My Granny bought it for me years ago and I never got around to reading it. I am so glad i did and now I'm kicking myself for not reading it sooner. I am in awe of the love of Lanen and Akhor and amazed that that much content was stuffed into that tiny book. I truely went on a journey with the chracters and can't wait to read the next book.

The more I think about the story (I read it three weeks ago) the more I realize it was a solid fantasy novel. The dialogue, the plot, characterization all solid. I would have given it 5 stars but I was never "anxious" to get back to the story - I wanted to but I was never anxious. Good writer.

This is essentially Twilight with a dragon instead of a vampire. Yes, really. If that appeals to you, then you'll like this, but if not, you should probably avoid this novel. Lanen is a dull author's pet, her dragon love interest is equally bland, and the plot is full of cliches.

This series is quite different than most fantasy books I've read simply because of the nature of the dragon characters. Elizabeth Kerner has fantastic characters, and a really cool concept of love and romance in a pastoral magical world.

Definite must read for dragon and fantasy fans :)

Wow. Just...Wow. Ever feel like after you finish a book that it was written just for you because your heart sings out to it so loudly? Yeah, this was totally that kind of book for me. Beautiful fantasy story with lush descriptions about a young, headstrong girl who falls in love with a dragon. If you love dragons, fantasy stories, or ever dreamed of being a dragon-believe me, you will ADORE this book!

This is just one of my all time favorite books. It's hard for me to explain because I have loved it for so long, but it really is a great book. I will admit the beginning is a little slow, but once we get to the island, it takes off. I definitely recommend it!

This is an awesome book about dragons. When I first read it, the time, place and characters seemed so familiar to me. And as I was finishing, I was listening to Lifehouse's 'Everything.' It just fit! I recommend this to all the dragon fans out there!

It was an extremely slow starting book. Took me about 2 weeks to get half way through it but boy, was it worth it! As soon as you hit that half way mark, it becomes such an amazing book! I loved the characters and the setting!! One of my all-time favorites!!

Dragons, and a strong female protagonist, what more could I ask for?
A female protagonist is important for me (sorry, I really do not mean to be offensive with that, it's just the way I enjoy the books I read), and friendship between dragons and humans is a winner with me too.

Lanen dreams of talking with dragons all her life. She finally gets a chance after her stepfather dies. She meets dragons and falls in love with one of them. This is a fun story of growing up and romance with a fantastical twist. It was a fun read.

The changing points of view, all written in first person were a serious distraction for me. It made the book somewhat choppy. I liked the story, but not the pacing of the romance. I felt like we'd missed the start of it and it deepened too quickly, even for a fantasy setting.

There is adventure enough though and intrigue to carry on into the rest of the trilogy and the second half of the novel read quite well.

When I picked this up as an innocent 14 year-old, I had no ideas that it would become one of the most memorable reads of my life. I have always loved dragons and Elizabeth Kerner's join my collect next to Anne McCaffery and Patricia Wrede.

I'm not sure why I picked up this book. Usually I find fantasy books of this size daunting and over my head. Not so with "Song in the Silence". It starts deceptively slow but picks up quickly, so that I found it hard to put down. I loved this new take on dragons and could tell the author worked hard on her details. I especially liked the dragons names and their opinion of gold. The romance in the story was lovely and surprising. Although the love declarations were a little melodramatic. I hope...more

Read this back in early high school or middle school. It's fluff, as one other reviewer mentioned, but it hit the spot at the time. I must have re-read it at least four times since first reading it, but not recently.

all-time favourite fantasy romance! didn't think I'd enjoy the first person style (kept switching characters) but it surprisingly worked and added to the writing style in my opinion! totally recommend this!

I just recently found a copy of this book at Half Price and have not read it since high school. I remember finding it randomly in our school library and loved it. I hope it is still as good as I remember.
