Cute catch up valentine related short story featuring Matt and Jared from Promises.

Romantic without being overly sappy or complete mush.

My one issue with the story would be that after 3+ years being in a gay relationship the character's narrative voice should be beyond thinking of things as straight/gay, manly/fem...emphasizing how they are too manly.

Fans of the author’s novel Promises will find this cute little Valentine’s short a must-read. It’s been three years since Matt and Jared met, and Jared’s angry comment about being appreciated along with Matt’s colleague’s marriage break-down, triggers Matt to begin a quest to make Valentine’s Day perfect for Jared and show him that he loves him and appreciates him.

Matt is a guy’s guy. He doesn’t get Valentine’s day, and Angelo and Zach from A to Z aren’t much help. Angelo thinks he’s insane to e...more

With the right amount of humor, romance and more, Marie Sexton delivers a wonderful addition in her Coda series with Matt & Jared front and center. I absolutely adore this series, not just because there are three main couples that it follows but because it has a heart and soul that leaves a reader breathlessly aching for more. Marie Sexton captures the heart of Jared and Matt in this funny, sweet and sexy Valentine's story that is perfect anytime of the year, not just on Valentine's Day. The...more

Appreciation. We all want it and some never get it. Then there are those who try too hard.

This is one of those stories.

I liked Matt and Jared from the moment I opened the book. The men are real. I felt their frustrations and fears as if they were my own. There may be only a few pages to the story, but it's written in a very realistic fashion--like reading about friends I know. The writing is fluid, making for a quick but engaging re...more

Putting Out Fires is a short story featuring the main characters from Promises and cameos from those in A to Z. You definitely don’t need to read the prior books to understand and appreciate the story offered here but fans of the series will delight in revisiting favorite characters in a familiar setting. The typical guy behavior about the holiday offers some nice humor mixed with tons of romance. This is easily worth reading and I think will be a big hit with romance fans.

I am the self-professed Ebenezer Scrooge of Valentine’s Day. Bah-humbug to it, I say! The made-up holiday is nothing more than a poor excuse for picking a man’s pocket every fourteenth of February, inciting bouts of near fatal stress to impress. Spontaneously give me roses on the twenty-first of August if you want to impress me.

Reading Putting Out Fires reminded me of why I have such a distaste for the day. Poor Matt! And it all began with a pink envelope, a misinterpreted comment, an...more

Lovable & Foolish. Jealous & uncertain. Unnecessary fears.
One would think three years into a relationship would solidify confidence in your bond. That maybe, just maybe you would know what your spouse, lover and best friend thinks and feels. Matt is an exception to this, for he is obviously still clueless.
My first thought, ‘Poor Jared’. However, in reality there is no poor Jared. Jared loves his jealous, insecure and oblivious partner. He loves him with every bit of his heart, and Matt...more

“A blow job’s more of a birthday thing. Do somethin’ you don’t normally do but that you know he’ll get off on.”
“Like what?”
He rolled his eyes at me. “How would I know, man? I never been in the bedroom with him.”
“Angelo, you’re still not helping.”
“Fine,” he said. “You want real ideas?”
“Yes.”
He leaned against the movie display, crossing his arms to look at me with guarded mirth. “You ever worn eyeliner?”
“What? No! Of course not!”

Another amazing story from Marie Sexton. And man, I just can't get en...more

I clearly have a soft spot for Matt & Jared, they were the first & their story just won me over. So it was obviously I was thrilled to read another glympse of their life.

It all started when Matt, thinking Jared is feeling under appreciated, decides to cook Jared a Valentine's dinner.

Honestly, I don't think I've ever laugh as much as I laugh reading this short story. From the moment Matt asks advices to Angelo ( who is the funniest, as always) through the moment Jared arrives home I cou...more

I usually don't like shorter stories, feeling some what cheated at how quickly the ending comes. This was just so funny and I could see myself in Matt's place. I have set a glass pot lid on a hot electric burner only to have it explode when I've gone to move it. I've put chicken directly in an oven, a toaster oven in my case, and had smoke come billowing out as the juices and marinade drip onto the heating coils. I am, at my core, a clumsy goof. I love that in a character. Matt had such good int...more

It's almost Valentine's Day and Jared makes an offhand comment to Matt about how it feels nice to be appreciated once in a while and that sets Matt off on a journey to show Jared how much he appreciates him.

Now, of course, it all goes terribly wrong but in the end, they get down to the real issue, which is that Jared never felt unappreciated by Matt and Matt should have known but it was nice that he put effort into it and they did discover a few things that will come in handy.

I thought it was a...more

I love Marie Sexton's characters. I love how she always keeps their flaws and quirks consistent, regardless of which perspective she is writing from. I love that they feel like real people who have real problems and whose HEAs are still works in progress. I would probably keep reading about the Coda men for as long as Sexton chose to keep writing about them.

"Putting Out Fires" is a sweet and funny Valentine's Day story told from Matt's perspective. It's one of those simple, mostly-plotless stori...more

It's the third Valentine's Day for Matt and Jared but this year, Matt wants to do something. He doesn't want Jared to think that he is taken for granted. So he is ready to prepare a special dinner ... if only he can avoid the disaster ...

I love Matt and Jared; but I love Cole and Jonathan even more. So all the way reading this short story, I'm bummed to notice that I have Matt/Jared, even Angelo/Zach, but no Cole and Jonathan. Not even a bit *pout*. Anyway, the dinner preparation disaster is kin...more

Good grief! This makes me laugh so hard I have tears In my eyes. Makes me remember few yrs back when I came home to find distressed neighbours in front of my door and a vile smell of burned shit. Well, we had a nice dinner OUT after that and someone learned that day that water can burn and not everyone can cook to save their lives, but that dosent mean they cant be incredible romantic. All that smoke and mayham made me feel so special tho. Tks hun!

This was actually funny! It was nice to see Matt trying to be romantic for Valentine's Day and it was hysterical how he pretty much destroyed the kitchen and dinner. I hate to cook, so I totally get Matt trying to cook to show he appreciates Jared and pretty much messing the entire thing up... it's so something I would do myself!
Trix
It was a short but cute moment from Matt and Jared's life. I couldn't stop laughing at all the blunders Matt made trying to organise a perfect Valentine's day.

But like Angelo said, Matt and Jared's relationship doesn't rely on romantic gestures but on the love between them and the way they prove that.

Quite a nice read!

The only reason this is not getting 5 stars is that it was just too short. I love Matt and Jared....they are so good together. Matt was busting me up...such a typical guy. The whole dinner fiasco was hilarious!!! Matt and Scooby fighting over the steak and Jared walking in? Loved it. Can't wait for the next book.

1.5 stars. There was charm and fun to the story, but it didn't hit it on two major counts for me.
As a short story: I wanted tighter writing. From recent forays in the world of short stories in romance, it fulfills the end of the spectrum that I tend to dislike.
As part of a series: it was a moment of fun, but didn't take us anywhere. Caveat: I tend to avoid the "gentle" contemporary romance. That I've enjoyed the rest of the series is unusual.

A very quick short story about Matt and Jared. I can't get enough of Matt and Jared so of course I loved this short. In a scene taking from their lives, Matt decides to cook dinner for Jared for Valentine's Day. It was very cute and endearing and I enjoyed it a lot.

wtf is with the cover? is .that guy dead with one nipple? are they old? is this paranormal ? lol.

dnf, not paying 3$ for 36 pages, esp since 3,5 was free.

and the old dead guy with one nipple is a total turn off. how did they age 20 yrs in one yr?

This Valentine's short story was so funny that I had tears streaming down my face AND so romantic that I got all verklempt. Even after having read hundreds of m/m stories, Marie Sexton is still my favorite author in this genre.

Sweet, funny, romantic and one of my favourite couples of all time - there was nothing here that I didn't love. I'd really missed Jared and Matt and this was just the perfect story to see them again. :)
Emmie
This was an ok short story. Frankly- I thought it should have been a freebie on the authors website as it was quite short and didn't propel the storylines forward. But - still, nice easy read. Enjoy.

Short, sweet and funny story about Matt and Jared from the Coda series. Matt wants to do something special for Jared for Valentine's Day. The kitchen scene was hilarious!

So sweet! I love this series. I wish it had been longer because I love Matt and Jared, but really it couldn't have been. It was a perfect short story for Valentine's Day!

I do have to give credit where it's due, though: Sexton does a decent job constructing shorts.

In this short story we meet Matt and Jared from Promises (Coda #1) again. It's Valentines and the do or don't celebrate dilemma hangs over Matt's head. When Jared says something about not feeling appreciated anymore Matt decides he has to do something really special for Valentines, but he has no ideas of what to do. In desperation he turns to Zach and Angelo for advice...but who of them should he listen to?

Cute, sweet, rather predictable and a bit overly schmaltzy...but I definitely prefer Matt...more

Jared and Matt are my favorite couple. My only complaint is that Putting out Fires is just too short. Some 30 pages. A Valentine's Day story on the m/m point of view. Funny and touching. Hopefully this is not that last we hear from them.
Chris
Very good short m/m romance about Matt trying to figure out what he can do for Valentine's in order to make Jared feel appreciated.

Marie Sexton lives in Colorado. She’s a fan of just about anything that involves muscular young men piling on top of each other. In particular, she loves the Denver Broncos and enjoys going to the games with her husband. Her imaginary friends often tag along. Marie has one daughter, two cats, and one dog, all of whom seem bent on destroying what remains of her sanity. She loves them anyway.
