My best friend read this when we were 12 and bought me a copy at her school library book sale. We were totally obsessed - and I can't, for the life of me, figure out why. But we would adapt it into impromptu plays on the stage of the old school I lived by, and talk about it for hours. In hindsight, it really is a wonder why I chose to love it so much, since it is not at all like anything I would enjoy reading now. Maybe it was a friendship loyalty things. Maybe I thought I should love it since K...more
I'm not sure how I got a hold of this book except that the title seemed compelling. It turned out to be about a girl named Dawn who's diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia at age 13. This book was enjoyable for me for two reasons: One, I got to learn a ton of words I didn't know how to pronounce and associate them with medical terminology; and two, I got very attached to the protagonist as she began her fight against cancer. Now, this book was extremely depressing. No one wants to think abou...more
These aren't the kinds of books I'd read over and over again, because honestly, although hopeful, they are kind of depressing, but I do enjoy them now and then. Lurlene McDaniel's has a way of making a non-cancer victim understand the emotions and stress those who experience cancer, even from a distance, go through. I enjoy her characters, even though they break my heart, and though I know the story won't end well for everyone, I want to find out how it ends. I like that McDaniel's doesn't just...more
I bought this book when i was in the 3rd grade if i remember right (I Have the first published addition). I bought it and Mother Please Don't Die and Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep all at our Book Fair that year. The reason i bought the book was because when i was reading the back the word "CANCER" jumped out at me. My Grandmother (the most precious person in my life) just told me she had breast cancer. I know i was young and all but i've always been an old soul. So anyways, I bought all these books...more

2006:
"[It was this] or some other crappy Lurlene McDaniel (I couldn't sleep and it was the only book in my cousins room other than the next one I'm going to mention) - you know, they're all the same. It's actually hilarious to look at a list of that woman's work: I'm going to die, don't let her die, the baby's dying, I want to live, saying good bye, etc. Good grief. They're formulaic, predictable, boring, easy, and shallow, but they're damn addictive."
2012:
Ahh, so she's the YA Jodi Picoult.

This story is about a teenager who is diagnosed with cancer. She is taken to a hospital, and there she meets a friend who is suffering with the same condition. The two girls cling to each other and their friendship as they face their sicknesses. It is a good, moral story. I was very hesitant at first to read this story because of the cover art. My copy was from the eighties and looked perfectly horrid. However, the book was decent. I enjoyed reading about the characters. It is aimed for a younge...more
I wasn't as moved by this book as I was by other Lurlene McDaniel books. I felt like the ending was a little bit predictable. I don't know why, but I didn't find Dawn to be as likable of a character as I would have hoped. Also, on the front cover of the book it refers to this book as "Dawn Rochelle Series: Book 1" which sort of ruins the whole dramatic effect of six months to live. I mean if there is a whole series about her then it's a pretty safe bet that she survives the book. So some of the...more
This is a small book every young girl or boy should read. Facing a terminal illness at 13 is a reality and for Dawn it happened. One ages fast but in a good way when one goes through chemo and the reality of death being close. Friends become more important and so does life. The little things of life so important to a 13 year old is not so important to one facing death as an ongoing companion, yet it is true for all of us even if we don't have cancer. This is about a 13 year old girl who wants to...more
I read this book in high school and was so absorbed in Dawn's battle against cancer. I was so afraid that she would not make it. It was such an emotional story and I may not be in the same situation as her in terms of having cancer and all but I love how she never gives up and tries to stay strong even after all the struggles she went through of chemotherapy and friends. Once I started reading this book I could not put it down and I hope to read the rest of the series real soon.
This book is about a thirteen year old girl who has cancer. When she is in the hospital, she meets a new friend. They did everthing together but one day Dawns friend Sandy was well enough to go home. They wrote each other everyday. They finally saw each other again at cancer camp. Cancer camp is a camp where kids with cancer go for two weeks and play games, swim, go on nature walks, and meet new friends. While Dawn and Sandy were at camp they became more than friends with two boys. When camp wa...more
I read this series of books (or at least parts of the series, our public library wasn't good at having all the books in a series!) as a teenager after my Grandfather died of cancer, and when I saw the complete set in the boot of the car (with the 3 boxes of books we were given to release after the DC convention) I grabbed them to re-read and pass on to my sister.
It was good to re-read them, although I think I enjoyed/got more out of them on the first reading!

this is one of the first books i read when i was like 14 or 15. i havent found it since. i love this site officially now. this book stole my heart when i read it. my heart went out to this girl. i remember she was so brave. i deffiantly would read this book over again. i need to read it again to do an official review. but u know it is awesome if it took the heart of a 14/15 year old who just started reading....
I read this book when I was maybe 10, 11 years old. I loved it - it was the first book that had ever made me cry my eyes out while I was reading. Dawn Rochelle's story was real and poignant, and everything I have come to expect of a character I love.
I have since started my daughter on Lurlene McDaniels books ... and she too, loves to laugh and cry her way through Dawn Rochelle's story.

I read this book in grade school, loved it and loved the sequel, "I want to live"--for me it was so gripping reading a book about a teenager having a serious illness. I still remember sitting on our porch swing crying my eyes out in the summer air and my step-dad asking me why I wanted to read books that made me cry instead of enjoying my summer but I WAS enjoying my summer. :)
Okay so...I picked this book up at the swim dock at Big Lake Youth camp, in 1988. I read two chapters and loved it. Then we went home. Twenty years later I off handedly mentioned it to my husband (I'd never forgotten the title) and he tracked it down and GOT it for me (one of his first internet purchases.
Anyway, sweet, deep little book. As cool as i remembered when I was ten.

I used to love books by Lurlene McDaniels in Jr. High. They are all about kids and teens with cancer. A lot of times they could be a little sad and depressing, but for some reason I couldn't stop reading them. I still liked this book after reading it as an adult. Her books allow readers to learn about cancer and how it effects the patients and their families lives.
"Thirteen is supposed to be a great age dances, cheer leading and boys.she never thought that it would also include cancer.Dawn Rochelle is about to face the toughest fight of her life. a fight she has to win, otherwise she only has six months to live." i always knew that i loved Lurlene McDaniel books and always will, but this book i picked up by total supris
First I need to say I love Lurlene McDaniel. I have read her books since I was 12 and still find them to be very interesting. My favorite is how do I love thee. Anyway, I got this book by luck and read it in one day. I loved it. I need to read the remaining books. it is very well written. I can't wait to read the others. I highly recommend it.
I read this book in elementary school...what a trip. I remember it was during the time my uncle was sick with cancer and we were visiting the hospital every day to see him. I know this book really helped me as a child...thank goodness for a mom that supported my reading and bought me books like this to help me understand my feelings!
I bought a copy of Six Months to Live at a book sale they had at school when I was a third grader. This is no longer one of my favorites but I LOVED it then. I probably read it three or four times. It's about a girl who finds out she has cancer and how she copes with it. I fell in love with the character. Sweet memories of this one!
this book is about a girl who finds out she has cancer and has to go to the hospital and meets a friend there her name is sandy. They become the best of friends. They go to this cancer camp during the summer together and meet some new friends. Later on at the end of the book something really bad happens but i can't tell you what.
I loved this book. It was the first book I read from Lurlene McDaniel. She likes to write about people in Medical conditions. That sounds bad but she makes them so interesting. This book is the first in the series. It's about a girl who has leukemia and the doctors told her she had 6 months to live.

I absolutely LOVED this book! This was the first book I was actually into and wanted to continue reading the next book in the series. How young she was and the struggle of having that horrible disease, but I am happy she found somebody just like her Sandy. :)
I would highly recommend this book!
