Mad Dog Summer: And Other Stories
Joe Lansdale returns with his characteristic dark take on the horrors that lurk beneath the surface of mundane life in this collection of short stories and novellas. Originally available only in limited-edition hardcover, these tales run the gamut from devilish fantasy to twisted courtroom drama to vampire-robot western. Each story has an introduction in which the author r...more

Either AuntiePam or Robert mentioned another book by Lansdale & I remembered that he was responsible for Bubba Ho-Tep
Wow - how have I not read anything by this guy before? Strong/raw stuff at times - sex (including homosexual rape)language & violence - but very compelling.
I liked just about every story in the collection; the following really scratched my itch:
* "The Steam Man of the Prairie and the Dark Rider Get Down" - In the intro to the story, Lansdale refers to the Golden Age SF a...more

It can get hot up in here in Canada during the summer--at least by Canadian standards--but I can't imagine the insufferable eff-off heat that hits Texas. I mean, you get into July and August, Hell's asshole must seem like a mild oasis by comparison. Anyway, it's a heatwave that sets the stakes for this story in Depression-era east Texas, as a young boy and his little sister discover a dead black woman down by the river and fear the fabled Goat Man might be responsible.

From the author's Introduction: "From stories of steam and vampires, to stories of the Great Depression, an article about my mother, a story about my popular characters Hap Collins and Leonard Pine, a long novella about a team of superheroes rescuing the devil, a collaboration with my wife. There's also a mule-napping. Your usual Lansdale collection." I could not write a truer or more accurate description than that. There is something for every literary taste in this anthology, but the one essen...more

What a great collection of stories! MAD DOG SUMMER, by Joe R. Lansdale, will keep you entertained with its wildly diverse tales. From mule rustlers to serial killers, there’s a lot to be told.
Lansdale is a natural-born storyteller. His extraordinary stories are intelligent, engaging, thoughtful, horrific (in a good way!) and most importantly, I’ve never read a story by him that was “dumbed down”. What I mean by that is his stories are written as an intelligent adult would communicate a story. La...more

Hunted this one down, especially, because it had the short story "Veil's Visit" and that's so far, the only story I've read.
In one of the Hap & Lenny books Lenny burned down the crack house next door to his place. Now, he's on trial for arson and Hap's old lawyer friend Veil has come to East Texas to defend him in the trial... written by Joe with lawyer/author/friend Andrew Vachss the story was every bit of fun I expected it to be.

Great short story collection. Includes three of my favorite JRL stories:
1. “Mad Dog Summer” by Joe R Lansdale (basis for the novel The Bottoms)
2. “The Big Blow” by Joe R Lansdale (also expanded into a novel of the same name, but the short story is better)
3. “The Steam Man of the Prairie and the Dark Rider Get Down: A Dime Novel”
