Really, who can not love a book with lines like that? I actually had the urge take this book in my hand with a strong grip and whirl it towards my head for waiting so long to read this series. I just kept putting it off for some reason or other. Luckily I came to my senses.
For the most part things have been pretty quiet this school year and Percy even makes a new friend named Tyson, a giant of a kid. Well,...more
Maybe I don't like ancient Greeks mixing with 21st-century Americans. Maybe it's Annabeth's recurring refrain of "oh my gods" that drives me insane, or maybe it's the fact that you can't turn 3 pages without Percy being in mortal peril. (Too much adventure is bad for the heart.) Maybe I can't buy into so many perfectly-timed rescue...more
The magical girl-who-became-a-pine-tree, Thailia, has been poisoned. The magical boundary that protects Camp Half-Blood is weakening, and deadly monsters attempt to wound the demigod boarder patrols as much a...more

Main hero is young son of magical lineage, destined by prophecy to one of two possible destroyers of the evil Lord because of his birthday (think Harry Potter and Longbottom). Impetuous and brave, but often lacking skill, he gets in fixes and needs his friends to pull him out. He attends a summer training school for magical persons like himself. D...more
Most of us are familiar with Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson books, but for those of you who are not, here is a brief synopsis.
The gods of ancient Greece are real, and they are not really the gods of ancient Greece at all but the gods of western civilization. These guys still live on Mount Olympus, but now their godly home is suspended out of sight above the Empire State building in New York City. Other than their new address however, not much has changed...more
"Sea of Monsters" isn't quite as elaborate as the first book - the adventures are a tad more linear and singular, but that doesn't really detract from what really is a "second installment" of a series. It's pretty obvious by this point that the books will continue for a while, and you aren't expecting the plot to be fully realized, explained, or finished, by the end of this book.
I think Riordan has stayed true to his characters in this second bo...more

I wasn't as into this one, I found it a bit cliché, very predictable (which didn't bother me in the first one), and a lot of eye rolling moments due to their bad choices. Regardless, it was still a good addition to...more
You shall find what you seek and make it your own,
But despair for your life entombed within stone,
And fail without friends, to fly home alone."
Percy Jackson's seventh-grade school year has been relaxing, for a change. He's been able to live with his mom in New York City, and he hasn't been attacked by monsters even once. That all changes on the last day of school, when an innocent dodge ball game turns into an explosive conflict that sends Pe...more
"Well, well, if it isn't Peter Johnson. My millennium is complete.
I gritted my teeth. "Percy Jackson...sir."
Mr. D sipped his Diet Coke. "Yes. Well, as you young people say these days: Whatever."
I love this series. Everything about it.
I love Percy and how much he's already grown up. Sure, he may not be shaving yet but he's more mature than most of the thirty year old men I know.
Honorary 4.5 stars
One of the joys of being the eldest sibling in my family is now having my twelve year old sister want to read good YA and children's stories. She's reading those books I used to love (and those which I still do). So when I completed my re-read of the first Percy Jackson novel I gave it to her and since she liked it I borrowed the second for her, and then read it again myself. I was pulled back into the world and saw a greater depth to the novel than my memories so I personally...more
And these are just the sprinkles on the top of a seriously dastardly situation. Luke, the charmer-turned-backbiter has gone over to the dark side with a vengeance. Plans are underway to resurrect the Titan Lord Kronos and unleash some pure, definitely ungodly hell.
And who has to deal with all these niggling details?...more
While this book was still cute, it boarded way too close on cheesy multiple times throughout the novel. The plot is rather contrived and convoluted, and things only work out for Percy and his friends because the author wants it to happen. There is no logical course of events. It's all just wrapped up with a pretty bow on top of it and I'm supposed to accept their last minute rescues like that's good planning. But it's not. M...more
It's not like most where the follow ups aren't as good as the first book, it's like Harry potter where all the books are equal I'm awesomeness,
I love it, I love it, I love. Especially since you get to see Percy, Annabeth and Grover etc all grow-up and develop.
I know this series will be one of my all time faves.

In this book, Percy illegally embarks on another quest to help save CHB (that would be Camp Half-Blood for the uninitiated) after someone poisons a special tree which holds up the magical protections around the camp.
Percy is joined in this book by Tyson,...more
