Meet Huck. He loves flowers. FLOWERS, FLOWERS, FLOWERS. And he'll do whatever it takes to get a mouthful: climb the highest mountain, walk a tightrope, even defy speeding trains! It's true, he can't resist! But when his mad dash up a church spire is mistaken for a heroic attempt to save Mrs. Spooner's flowery hat (rather than a determined effort to eat it), Huck has a cris...more

This story is fabulous! Huck the goat is completely CRAZY about flowers. But sadly, so are the other goats so Huck is forced to go far and wide to curb his flower craving. Again and again Huck is thwarted in his attempts to eat the flowers he finds. But when he finally has the chance, will he really go through with it or will he choose to save the day?
The illustrations in this story are sensational! They are bright and whimsical and silly, just like Huck. The text features a repetitive rhyming...more

Huck is a goat, so naturally, all he thinks about is eating. But while other goats will settle for eating cardboard boxes (which taste like boring afternoons to Huck), wooly gloves (which get stuck between your teeth), and bird's nests (which make Huck sneeze), Huck prefers flowers. Lots and lots of flowers. His love of flowers leads him on several adventures, where he can't quite sink his teeth into a tasty bouquet. When Huck finally gets his chance, will he dive in or think of others first?

I've seen Peter H. Reynolds draw lots of things. Mostly people, kids usually. But a goat? Nope. Not until now. And let me just say, he draws a wicked funny goat.

Huck is a flower-loving mountain goat. Oh, he doesn't love them in the, "aren't these flowers so looooovely?" kind of way. Huck loves them in the, "aren't these flowers so deliiiiicious??" kind of way. Whenever he spots some tasty blossoms, he just cannot resist. He will attempt anything to get his teeth around those beautiful blooms. Wi...more

This is a fun, rollicking story about a goofy goat who likes to eat flowers. The narrative is lyrical and it features a repeating, rhyming refrain that is just terrific to read aloud. The illustrations are hilarious and we recognized the illustrator from the Judy Moody stories, among others. They depict the crazy antics of Huck the goat and complement the story perfectly. We really enjoyed reading this story together.

The illustrations were wild and hilarious, the rhyme bosterous and amusing. This book was definitely a hit with me! I mainly picked it up because of the illustrator, but the text and overall happy-go-lucky feel of the book was delightful. It was fun to see all the things Huck got himself into and it interesting to see his progress throughout the book. I especially liked the rhyme right when Huck was about to nab a tasty treat...or so he thought. I couldn't help but smile while reading this book...more

I am enjoying recent books starring goats, who I think are generally misunderstood farm yard creatures and not well-represented in books (unlike the chicken and pig contingents). Not since Heidi have I met a more charming goat than Huck, who loves to eat flowers. His floral obsession results in disasters over and over, but Huck can't resist. This would be a fantastic read aloud with its vibrant language and phrasing (although I can't say for certain, Huck, I imagine cardboard boxes do taste like...more

A silly tale of a goat who will eat anything, but just can't resist flowers -- no matter where they are. His desire for flowers gets him into all sorts of hilarious trouble, until he has a chance to do a good deed. Can Huck save the day? Comic watercolor, tea, and ink illustrations by Peter Reynolds keep the story lighthearted. Ages 4-8.

A silly story about a goat who loves to eat flowers. Huck is thwarted over and over as he tries to find some delicious flowers to eat. Finally, he has the opportunity to be a hero -- but can he pass up his chance to eat flowers to save the day?

A silly and delightful book! Good for making predictions or as a short character study.

The poor goat just wants to eat some beautiful, exciting flowers! Why is it so difficult? He is sick of boring, old boxes. Plenty of opportunities in this book for audience interaction and the wild eyed goat trying so hard to get at the flowers reminds me of the crazy squirrel from the Ice Age movies trying to the nut. Funny!

FUNNY! Rhyming and repetitive with great illustrations! Had a lot of fun with this one in storytime. It reminded me a bit of Wet Dog by Elise Broach in the way the story was set up: animal after 1 thing, meets a lot of characters along the way with comic results, cartoony illustrations. Great book!

A nice repetitive tale with great illustrations by the incomparable Peter H. Reynolds. The narrative is a wee bit long, but it's an otherwise solid story blessed with the familiar hand of Mr. Reynold's artwork.

Huck the goat loves to eat flowers and they have all been eaten in his area. So the adventure begins as he must eat flowers. They are everywhere--in boquets on underpants, on tablecloths. Everywhere. A fun romp.

Huck is a mountain goat in search of flowers to eat. Sounds like it should be an easy search but then again...not so easy. Lot of laughs in this one including silly antics and fun illustrations.

This one was all right, but a little long for it being just repeating things over again. The illustrations were a little cluttered, so my youngest was kind of lost and got disinterested.

This would be fun read-aloud since the text often addresses the reader. Huck the billy goat is quite comical-looking as well. Pair it up with Jan Thomas' "Lets Count Goats".

Huck the goat has one thing on his mind---flowers! Good readaloud option for early elementary (bit too long for preschool audiences). Delightfully illustrated.

SO HILARIOUS. This book just begs to be read aloud to kids. I loved all his goofy expressions and the descriptions of his flower-hunting shenanigans.

I can't wait to add this to my storytime rotation. The illustrations are adorable and made me smile, and the text made me smile even more.

Huck goes through all sorts of adventures just to get a taste of some flowers. Very entertaining read. Great illustrations.

Really fun to read out loud! Plus, the illustrations (and the handwritten parts) remind me of Stink- so that just made me smile!
Kris
Can't wait to read this aloud to elementary students. Huck tries so hard to get to the flowers he craves. Love Reynolds' art.
Stefani
Cute story but I couldn't get the rhythm. Some parts rhymed, others didn't. Still, kids would enjoy it as a read-aloud.

What the five-year-old thought: "He runs amuck. Huck that goat, he's so very silly."

Sean Taylor started writing poetry as a teenager. In 1993, he came across a newspaper article which reported that a goat slaughtered in Iran had been found to have teeth made of gold. He tried writing a story for children. It was called 'The Goat with the Golden Teeth' and it won second prize in a competition run by the British newspaper 'The Independent' and Scholastic Children's Books. Since the...more
