With bittersweet feelings, I bring you this review of 'Ascend'. This is the last book in The Trylle Trilogy. It is just as enthralling as the first two books in the series. I am not giving spoilers here. You will want to experience the evolution with the cast of Trylle for yourself. Some may cry, some may cheer, but in my opinion, Hocking has written one of the best series in YA fantasy.

Final thoughts: Ugh. I am so disappointed by this book. It was an absolute mess. Hocking seems to have realized late in the game that she needed to resolve points from her first two books in this trilogy and she kind of just jams those resolutions in without any honest flow. There's also a Bella Swan element here of Wendy constantly wanting to go out and save the day on her own and having the men who love her constantly tell her they won't lose her like that and "never do that again".

Hocking also seems to have no idea about the realities of war and she even seems to forget the time period she's in. A whole city has been attacked and Wendy first sends 10 people out to go help them. Those 10 people come across the attackers in a forest and surprise them. But if everyone is driving cars and cities aren't that far away, how come the attackers stopped at all and how did the 10 scouts (who are in cars driving on roads) just happen to come across them in the forest? Later, Wendy herself goes out to the town, makes one round in the palace ballroom that's being used as a hospice, and then she goes out and cleans the town. Yup. She and the others clean. No rescuing of anyone. No burying. Cleaning.

The romance part isn't handled well either. Wendy has three guys in her life, but the person she seemed to want the most for the first two books is just kind of there in this one and she's suddenly deeply in love with someone else.

Another similarity to Meyer's work is the seeming need for everyone to have a happy ending. Breaking Dawn annoyed me because everyone ended up happy. Ascend is similar. All things work out for everyone good and nice. Bad guys are no longer around and/or bad. Blah blah blah. I could go on and on for days about the problems in this book.

Hocking needs an editor desperately. Her FAQ says that she writes each book in about three weeks. It really shows in this one. Writing a book and self-publishing it doesn't mean it's necessarily worth reading and this one isn't.(less)

This is it. The queen is dying. The king wants her kingdom. He will do anything to get it. Only Wendy stands in the way.

The final book in the Trylle Trilogy has great character development and an excellent romance. I was, however, a bit underwhelmed by the ending. We'll get to that. First, the characters. Wendy can be a bit dramatic. She will jump to decisions in a heartbeat and that kind of annoyed me at first. It's like she doesn't stop to think before she acts. I guess I should be used to her by now but it irritated me more in this one. I think she may have been a bit too confident by her almost-queen status. But since she is almost the queen, she shouldn't make rash decisions. She seemed to do as she pleased without listening to advice thrown at her. So I did get a bit frustrated with her decisions. However, she still has her awesome sense of humor that had me giggling a few times. Next to her, we have the whole gang of side characters that I grew to admire from the first book. I loved Tove especially in this one, but we didn't delve much deeper into any of them except for Loki.

Loki is the character I was the most fond of. He is an absolutely great addition to the series. Mysterious and sincere - he's a really strong character with a lot of heart. The romance he shares with Wendy is intense and honest. It's not only Loki that's been grasping at Wendy's heart, though. Finn has never left it, but she's trying to move on. I actually quite enjoyed the way the love triangle played out in this series. It didn't turn out the way I thought it would, and that was a pleasant surprise. It made it much less cliché with real emotional consequences.

This series as a whole is not incredibly action packed. It's more about the characters and the ominous upcoming battle. This battle that finally arrives, to me, was a bit underwhelming. Having waited 2 previous books for this epic showdown, then getting it over with without much effort, not to mention a bit too perfectly, felt anticlimactic. It's very much the happily ever after ending. It wasn't bad, but I expected more emotion, more negative repercussions I guess; giving it more weight to make it memorable. Maybe I'm just a masochist. *shrugs* Regardless, I wouldn't say I was disappointed with the ending, I just wasn't wowed by it.

This whole series is definitely fun. I loved learning about the complex world of Trylle and Vittra. It's highly original. I also had a great time getting to know the numerous characters inside it. It reads a lot like a mild fantasy novel that I'd recommend for paranormal fans who are looking for something different and creative.

After reading the first two books, I thought the story was interesting and had an intriguing storyline but overall, the entire trilogy went downhill fast.

I read these three books back-to-back-to-back on my Kindle. The story had me so engaged, that I could not put it down. I was reading in the car, at school, on my bed, at the dinner table, and in the media room. You could call it an obsession.

Review
I read all three of these books over a sick weekend, when I was stuck mostly in bed. This is not to speak bad of the trilogy, the thing is, I actually probably stayed in bed even more because of the books. The trilogy was very well written. Wendy is a great main character, a strong person who grows from a defiant teenager into a true leader determined to do some good. I was really impressed with the story because there were many times I was thinking that Amanda Hocking was going to go in one direction with the story - and ended not taking that route at all. The only plot point that I got right (and was happy about) was her marriage to Tove.

So what I wasn't happy about (and this is SPOILER - so please discontinue here if you wan to read)

I wanted Finn! I completely, COMPLETELY understand why Wendy chose not to go with him. He didn't fight, he didn't stand up for her. He was sucked into society. I got it. But Amanda, why did you have to write it that way?? They shared some amazing, steamy moments. Much, much better than any moment with Loki in my opinion. I understand why Loki ended up being the better fit. But STILL. Ugh.

Oh, and this is how much I didn't care for Loki. I didn't trust him. I wanted him to betray her, so she'd go back to Finn. I also wanted Tove to step up and give her a strange fit of passion and the happy ever after in that direction. I never had eyes for Loki. But I'm not the author. And I do understand why the book went the direction it did. (I keep saying that. I want to impress that this was a trilogy worth the read though!!)(less)

I never find myself wanting to skip past parts in boredom of endless elaboration of feelings or a situation. In this final book, Wendy finally takes over the Trylle kingdom, after her mother passes. Before Elora passed, I was pleased to see that Wendy and Elora shared some tender and heartfelt moments together. Elora had, for the most part, come across cold and never truly expressed love towards her daughter, Wendy. After her passing, Wendy was surprised to discover that Elora had painted numerous paintings throughout her childhood, confirming the motherly love that Elora held for her. -Especially considering that Elora sacrificed a portion of her longevity, so to speak, with each painting she did.

The much-talked about love between Wendy/Finn or Wendy/Loki was a complete surprise to me. At first, I thought I wanted to see Wendy and Finn together, after their brief almost-happened love scene. When Wendy abruptly called it quits before they went too far, I was really disappointed, and didn't understand why Wendy would give up the opportunity to *finally* be with Finn. But as the story progressed, I realized what Ms. Hocking had in mind :) and my opinion completely changed. Wendy and Finn shared an emotional final "break-up" of sorts, in which she tells Finn why she moved forward with Loki, and gave up on the hope of a Wendy+Finn future. Finn never fought for her, to be with her, or just not enough. He was too driven to abide by the rules and with making her Queen, and that always seemed to get in the way of any future they would have had together. Loki, on the other hand, had gone through hell and back, essentially, for Wendy. As the story progresses with more Wendy/Loki moments, I had no disappointment what so ever about the final love outcome. They truly do seem perfect together, and though it was sad to see both Wendy and Finn have a little heartbreak, it was worth it in the end to see the final outcome.

The ending of this book was perfect, and I would not change a single thing! Wendy's tyrant of a father is put to rest, thanks to Wendy, for the majority, and both Kingdoms are finally at peace with one another. The Epilogue, especially, was just absolutely amazing. It ended so well that readers won't be left sad at the end of this trilogy, but rather happy with how things are left. It was everything I was hoping, and more!

I devoured the first two books as soon as I got them. I really liked them. I was just super excited for this one, and I was not disappointed. Mostly. The ending made me want to kill a couple of people (Not the very ending. It was happy.), because of a few romantic set ups. Anyways... before I start ranting again...

The beginning was kind of surprising, because Loki just randomly showed up. Now, I've been having some mixed feelings about him. In no way whatsoever did he make them any better at the end. But yeah. He's kind of confusing, which I guess is good, but I still don't think he was explained enough. I mean, Wendy barely even knows him, and she just goes with what he says and trusts him completely. What???

Wendy totally changed in this one. She went from being a shy girl that was all "I can't be a princess! What if I get everybody killed?" to "I am your Princess, so you do what I say. Got it? Good." It was so sudden, I liked it and didn't really like it at the same time. She just changed too much to like.

Finn. I can't talk about him. Not without ruining it. All I can say is that I am Team Finn all the way. :)

Elora changed in this one, too, but I liked it much more. I guess when you're on your death bed it does that to you (That's not a spoiler, right? I mean, she was sick since the second book...). She truly showed her love for Wendy, and it made me cry. I really felt for her and Wendy and wished that they could've had a normal mother-daughter relationship. Alas.

Speaking of mothers, Sara isn't in this one much (or in any of them), but I really like her. I just wish she was more vocal rather than being a little follower Queen.

I just love the other characters. They're such great people. I love Matt, and Willa, and Duncan. I wish they were my best friends. I miss Duncan's clumsiness. What happened to it???

I think my biggest complaint would be how short this one was. I loved the book, I really hope there's more! (A spin-off, or two?) Also about how short it was- I think some parts were too rushed. I wish the battle was a little more interesting and descriptive, not just done with in two pages.

I loved this book's action (There's more in this one. It keeps you on edge.) and humor (Wendy is so funny. I love her sarcasm.). I think I can compare this book to Twilight and The Hunger Games. Twilight because Wendy is like Bella with nothing short of a billion guys in her life and she has to choose one. The Hunger Games because, well, I can't get into it too much or else I'll spoil it, but let's just say I didn't exactly prefer the guys that Katniss and Wendy end up with. I was just a little pissed (Ok, maybe a little more than that... It's not like I'm mentally rewriting the ending. *scoffs* /sarcasm) ...

Read this book! It has its twists and turns that I just totally inhaled and ended up with wanting more! This series introduced me to author Amanda Hocking, and I will definitely be looking for more of her books! (less)

This is a difficult review to write. Not because I’m at a loss for words - because I have too many! I’m about to burst at the seams needing to vent to someone about everything that went down in the final installment of The Trylle Trilogy. What are you trying to do to me, Amanda Hocking? How am I going to express any of my opinions here without giving anything away from the book? I suppose I will stick to safe topics, and this review may go down as one of the shortest in my little blogging histor...more This is a difficult review to write. How am I going to express any of my opinions here without giving anything away from the book? I suppose I will stick to safe topics, and this review may go down as one of the shortest in my little blogging history.

Normally, I like to gush about the yummy male characters, but I think I did enough of that in my last two reviews. I’m actually excited to talk about Wendy this time. I’ve had definite issues with her in the last two books, but talk about character development! Wendy really grew into a likeable heroine who worked hard to earn the respect of not only her peers, but the respect of the readers. She showed strength and compassion in Ascend, and, while I didn’t agree with everything she did or certain choices she made, I am very pleased with how Wendy matured and the young woman she grew into. She’s no Remy, but she definitely wins most improved.

Another shocker was that I, albeit begrudgingly, changed my opinion about Elora. Oh, I fought it, believe me... but, when all was revealed, I certainly saw things from a different point of view.

I will miss these characters, and, even though it ended a lot differently than I would have thought, I enjoyed everyone’s happily-ever-after. The glimpse into their future lives was very satisfying and gave some closure no matter what “team” you were on. I will hold out hope that Finn will get his own book one day - he is not a character that I am ready to say goodbye to.

Ascend is the perfect ending to the Trylle Trilogy. I'm sure there are more than a few people who wish Amanda Hocking had taken the obvious route with her plot, but I for one am so glad she didn't.

Wendy is trying to save her people but they continue to fight against her and amongst themselves making her task seem insurmountable. She has put the needs of her kingdom ahead of her own, but no matter what she tries, everything seems to be falling apart. I love that Wendy fights for what she believes...more

I really hated that the Trylle Trilogy had to end.. but at least Hocking went out big with ASCEND. I absolutely loved the first two books, but this final installment was the best yet. Once I picked it up, I just couldn't put it down. The growth of the characters, that fans have come to love, is strong and undeniable. This was the final installment to the long awaited Trylle Trilogy... Frankly? I was surprised! Mostly in a good way.

I completely stumbled upon Amanda Hocking's work, and I have been addicted since day one. Might I add, that since then, I've read her entire Trylle Trilogy and My Blood Approves series in just under two weeks... I'm strange. But, I digress! Onto the book.

Pretty good ending, the last book pulled things together in a nice little package at the end. The ending was kind of predictable, but that doesn't really matter. I can’t help wish that this was expanded into 4 books. It seemed like things were over too quickly and rushed. There was decent detail and I was satisfied with it, but in my humble opinion, some of the history and things going on could have been expanded on to make it seem less like the author trying to fit a lot of story in a few pages...more

This is the last book in the Trilogy, following Switched and Torn. Many things happen at the beginning of this book. Loki requests amnesty from Elora, who is getting weaker and Wendy must step in to fulfill her role as princess. It is after then that Wendy finds out how he has been tortured by the Vittra King. Μια αγαπημένη σειρά φτάνει στο τέλος της και είναι από εκείνες τις φορές που από τη μια χαίρομαι που φτάσαμε στο τέλος και θα μάθω που καταλήγει η ιστορία, αλλά από την άλλη με ενοχλεί που πρέπει να αποχωριστώ τον κόσμο των Τριλ και τους χαρακτήρες του.

Ήρθε η στιγμή να παρθούν οι αποφάσεις εκείνες που θα καθορίσουν τις ζωές όλων. Πόσο δύσκολο όμως μπορεί να είναι αυτό για την Γουέντι; Προκειμένου να τα καταφέρει θα επιστρατεύσει όσους μπορούν να προσφέρουν σε αυτή την έσχατη προσπάθεια ενώ παράλληλα εκείνη θα ρισκάρει την ζωή της περισσότερο από όλους. Την ίδια στιγμή διχάζεται και συναισθηματικά αφού ο Λόκι την διεκδικεί χωρίς αναστολές με αποτέλεσμα να δοκιμάζονται σκληρά οι αντιστάσεις της. Όλα θα κριθούν τώρα. Το μέλλον του βασιλείου, το μέλλον της Γουέντι και όλων όσων αγαπά και νοιάζεται. Όταν όλη αυτή η ιστορία θα φτάσει στο τέλος της, πιστέψτε με η αυλαία θα πέσει εντυπωσιακά. Δράση, κίνδυνος, φόβος, συναίσθημα, εξομολογήσεις, αγάπη, έρωτας και όλα αυτά πλεγμένα περίτεχνα από την νεαρή Hocking. Η «Στέψη» κλείνει υπέροχα μια αγαπημένη ιστορία την οποία θα κάνουμε καιρό να ξεχάσουμε.

What happened: A lot. Wendy and Tove get married. The night before Finn and her almost have sex but she stops it when she realizes he will just leave and things will be awkward again. Loki comes begging to be taken in by them. He is covered of cuts and shit. Turns out the king beat him. Her mother is dying. One of their other towns gets attacked by the Vittra. He also tells her how Loki was using her. Trying to get her to fall for him and take her back to Oren. Once they leave Loki explains things to her and tells her that might of been what he said but he would never have taken her back. He got hurt for her, and he really cared about her. They all try to come up with a plan to save the kingdom and Wendy has to come up with an idea to kill the King. They go to the kingdom that got attacked and try and help out. There Tove goes a bit crazy from his powers and hits Wendy. That night Wendy and Loki have sex. Oh jesus. Naughty naughty. Tove apologizes but also tells her he is gay and knows his powers are killing him so he'd like to get a divorce so he can be with someone he loves. He also knows her and Loki love each other and she tells him about the sex. Wendy's mother dies and she becomes Queen. Before she died she drew a painting of all of them dead in the palace. So they decided to go to Vittra and attack them when they aren't expecting it. She has determined that chopping the king's head off will kill him. They get there and instead of killing the King the king brings Loki in, and tells Wendy that he said if she went back on the deal he'd kill Loki and he does. Wendy pleaded for his life and agreed to do anything but he said it was too late and stabbed him. Wendy gets so upset she uses her powers and is able to get close enough to kill him. Luckily Sarah comes in and is abel to save Loki. Yay. Finn agrees to let Wendy go and he ends up with some girl from the destroyed village that has a child. Ugh. Wendy and Tove get divorced. Loki and her get married she is also pregnant from that night they had sex. Loki is king. I'm all happy but pissed about Finn at the same time. Ugh.

This is a series summary of the three books in the Trylle series. I am pleasantly surprised by this body of work. The writing is simple and easy to read.
Surprising the edition of the books I read were published by St. Martin's Press and they were still rife with grammatical mistakes. I'm no wordsmith nor am I too disturb with mistakes but if a publisher is going to buy the books and reissue them, the least they can do is a line edit to fix the errors.
