I have been reading Anne McCaffrey's Pern books for many years. I discovered them when I was twelve, and over the course of that summer I devoured all that had been written. I adored them. I adore Masterharper Robinton. I have a print of the portrait of Robinton that Robin Wood did for her People of Pern book. I always thought a book about Robinton would be great, and I wanted to like The Masterharper of Pern when it came out. I expected a lot from The Masterharper of Pern, and I was greatly dis...more

It's hard to know the best order to read the books of Pern as many of the stories overlap. However, I have put them in a somewhat chronological order that gives the reader a logical sequence to follow. I recommend starting with this one.
For those of you who are new to Pern, it is an earth-like planet inhabited by human beings who live in a medieval-styled society. There is no magic on Pern, but there are fire-breathing, telepathic dragons who bond at their hatching with the human who will...more

The first Pern book I read in hardcover, brand new. I was so excited.
I really enjoyed this book because, of course, it focused on Robinton. The neat thing about him was the long life he had, so I was able to learn more about F'lar, F'nor, Ruatha, and so many other places before the timeframe of Dragonflight.
Reading the other books before this one makes it really enjoyable, because you get to look down on one of the world's most beautiful minds and really understand the part he played in ...more

I really appreciate this book. It gives a real look inside the character that many thought to be not that important. Master Robinton was one of the key members of the Pern series and to finally get a look into his life and his background, to find out way he became the masterharper and why he is the way he is, it is fantastic. I would most definitely recommend this book to anyone reading the Pern series.

I loved this book. The thing that most impresses me most about McCaffrey is that she can run an entire universe and keep it all straight. She must have more then 10 dragonrider/Pern books, some of which run during the same time, yet it is hard to find any continuity errors. After the first three they can nearly be read in any order. I've read this one at least twice and I always enjoy it.

I really enjoy the Dragonriders of Pern books. Some of the later books get into some homosexual references, which I don't enjoy reading about. It is a side element and not a main plot line. But because of this I would caution the young reader from getting into this series, until they can clearly think through this issue.

Pern lovers
This special novel gives you the wonderful life and times leading up to the "first" novel Dragonflight. Robinton is a pivital charcter throughout the origial main set of novels that kicked off this series. A must read for those who love the Turn time line encompassing Lessa and F'lar.

Probably my favorite sci-fi novel. If you like music, dragons, and fantasy novels, this is an easy book to fall in love with. The plot isn't too fast moving, and even if you're not familiar with Pern, this book is a good introduction to Pern's politics, life, and dragons.

This is a newer book in the series, but in the Pern timeline, it ends at the beginning of Dragonflight. Love this book. Love Robinton. By far, one of the best characters AM ever created. There are some incongruities, but it's worth glossing them over.

Loved it, loved it, loved it.
All of Anne McCaffery's books are top shelf!!! This book tied in some loose ends or fleshed out parts in other books from the Dragon Riders of Pern that I had wanted to know more about. Great book!

Another great one from Mc Caffrey! This one details the life of Robiton, the most loved harper of Pern. If you like reading the books in chronological order, your next read would be "Dragonflight"

Although I really love the Pern series, and think Robinton is an amazing character, I felt like this story fell on its face.

This is the story of Robinton before he became the MasterHarper of Pern. It's an excellent read.
