As the name makes clear, a survey of the multifarious branches and schools of art, great and small, that flourished (and died away) during the twentieth century. Although there is some element of dryness often encountered, this is to be reasonably expected in such a volume and is no real obstacle to even the casual reader learning plenty about the subject.
