A fun book that is great for read-alouds to bigger groups or just you and your child(ren). I'm not sure who could read this without breaking into sing-song mode. The illustrations are big, colorful, and clear. You know, I love more artsy illustrations and am crazy for mixed medium stuff, but for storytimes (I'm on staff at a public library in the children's dept.) you really have to have clear images so everyone can see--and vibrant colors certainly help. The pictures on the last couple pages ar...more
There's a point in Youth Services when you figure out that you can turn the "Hokey Pokey" into anything. This year we have done the Pirate Pokey, Hockey Pokey, Turkey Pokey, etc, etc. So, on one hand, I'm not terribly impressed with this book because it's not anything I haven't done. On the other hand, the illustrations are cute, and there is a little visual joke that the kids are sure to love. Not my favorite frog book, but for those of us who haven't Hokey-Pokey'ed to everything under the sun,...more
This hilarious amphibian version of the classic "Hokey Pokey" reveals what it really is all about. A frog tries his best to capture a fly buzzing just out of reach. As the verses of the "Croaky Pokey" spill across the book's pages, each ending is punctuated with tongues whapping, beaks and mouths snapping, until all are entangled and silent. The clever watercolor and pencil illustrations will put smiles on young faces as they enhance the text so cleverly. Young readers will request this one repe...more
A very funny, froggy version of the Hokey Pokey. Frogs do all the movements, but instead of each verse ending with "that's what it's all about" it ends with "Hop the croaky pokey as we chase a fly around, right in the froggy's mouth!" Only somehow the froggy never manages to catch that doggone fly. The pictures are hilarious as the frogs dance about and the poor inept frog who tries to catch the fly is thwarted at every attempt. Great surprise ending, too!
Always on the lookout for books to use in music-themed storytime, this is a great new option! A fly teases frogs throughout the text of the classic song (containing a slight variation from the original: "Hop the Croaky Pokey as we chase a fly around, Right in the Froggy's mouth"). This fly alludes capture, resulting in amusing consequences for the swamp creatures. Hysterical twist at the end of the book will have preschoolers squealing with laughter!
In this hilarious version of the well-known children's song, a pond full of animals -- frogs, fish, birds, and alligators -- try to catch a bug while singing and dancing to the renamed song, froggy version. The author/illustrator says, "The illustrations for this book were created using frog saliva and bug juice, painted with a stork feather. Actually, it was watercolor and colored pencil." Funny picture book for ages 2-7.
This twist on the Hokey Pokey is hilarious. A fly taunts a frog with a variation on the Hokey Pokey called Croaky Pokey. Poor frog is trying to catch that fly and ends up irritating the other creatures around him. But maybe there is a consequence for being a smart-mouth fly...the illustrations make this story. Bright, lively, and just perfect.
A fun version of the Hokey Pokey. You'll have a hard time getting kids to sit still to this one. If you read this one aloud to a group of kids you must PROMISE to make a little fly to chase around the library (mine's on a lolly stick).

An amazingly fabulous take on the Hokey Pokey. In this book frogs are trying to catch a fly. But as they hop and flap about they keep missing the fly until finally a fish gets him. All of the frogs are tied up in each other's tongues!
Frogs sing and do their own version of the Hokey Pokey.
A great book for story time where the kids can join in on the reading/singing. Bright illustrations and funny too
