Fergus and his little brother, Dink, love collecting the things that wash up on the beach, especially if it means that Fergus doesn't actually have to go in the water. Then one day, they spy the greatest treasure of all-an abandoned surfboard. When no one comes to claim it, they make it the star of their collection and name it "Dave." But when Dave accidentally (on ...more

Things are laid back and casual in “Pig Kahuna”, with siblings Fergus and baby brother Dink enjoying each other’s company on the beach. Both stay on shore, never venturing into the water as they are fearful of what creatures lurk in there. Nonetheless, they are quite content to find treasures in the sand, until an abandoned surfboard washes up shore. They name it “Dave” and they find fun and creative ways of spending time with Dave. Of course, the good times are cut short by Dink who wants to ...more
I love the title of this book. The story andpictures were fun. Not a must-read for some, though definitely one that I think the kids would enjoy (for I sure did). I think I would read this aloud better in a lap-read than in a storytime. (I bet my sister could make it awesome!) Still, I would love to add this to a storytime or something for the school-age kids. It's too bad it wasn't more Polynesia specific, as I'm not sure how else to to justify using it in my KidTrekkers program. Then ...more

Brothers Dink and Fergus are at the beach collecting special treasures. Fergus doesn't dare to go in the water because of the ickiness within. When they find a lone surfboard washed up on shore, it becomes their perfect treasure companion. But when Dink decides the board needs some shine, who will be the one to save it from the icky water??
Darling story. The acrylic and colored pencil illustrations are bright, bold, and beautiful...the perfect combination to this darling picture book about brot

Loved this book! "Pig Kahuna" follows two young pigs who find surf board on the beach and name it Dave. When the little brother decides that Dave misses the water, he puts Dave back into the ocean. When the older brother goes in to retrieve Dave, he soon ends up caught by the waves and learns how to surf! I think this book would be great to read aloud to students and to teach children that it is fun to discover and try new things.

What a great balance of cute and irreverence in both the story and illustrations. The characters are creative just like kids left to their own devices are creative. Which makes me wish kids were left to their own devices...more...than they generally are these days. So maybe this story can inspire more kids to be creative and maybe just maybe it can inspire more parents to leave kids to their own devices.

This book is really adorable. I used it for a story time for children ages 3 - 5. The kids enjoyed it so much I made sure I purchased the other two Pig Kahuna books by Jennifer Sattler.

I highly recommend - they are funny, well written, great pictures and just plain adorable. They are sure to be a big hit with kids every where.

I've long agreed with these pigs about the lurking murky ickiness of the ocean, so I enjoyed this picture book. I'm skeptical of surfing without getting in the water, but if anyone could do it, I'm sure a pig could.

Cute story, was Emery's lit book she read aloud in class. About overcoming fears and trying new things, even if on accident. Very cute, great artwork of the two little pigs, and funny play they do on the beach. Would have in a classroom, probably not use as a class text.
A fun beach story with delightful pig-brothers who find a surfboard. Wonderfully subtle themes such as overcoming fear to save a friend, and creativity, and playing together well.

Great for storytimes and for displaying in the summer.

There's nothing wrong with this book, but I didn't find it especially memorable. That's been the case with all of Sattler's books for me, though, so it's probably just a matter of taste.

Thanks to Judy Freeman for introducing the book to me. Dink, Fergus, and Dave, will always be my friends...even if I never set foot on a surfboard!

Might be my new favorite picture book. Living in Florida I can identify with what a treasure a board in the Ocean truly is! Ferguson and Dink are adorable.

So, I picked up this book primarily because my kiddo is a water loving maniac and also one grandparent likes surfing a lot. The story is about a little pig named Feegus who likes beach combing and one day he finds a surfboard washed ashore, but he's afraid to go swimming.

The art is pretty distinctive and rather cute. It reminded me a little of Piglet from Winnie the Pooh, but the aloha shirt is spot on.

Story wise I thought that it was a little on the thin side, but my kiddo loved hearing it. I w

Brief review: A cute fiction story about a two pig brothers that learn to conquer their fears. This is a good book to read at the end of the year or even the beginning, when summer time is still around. The book has two pigs with funny names, which makes reading this out loud to kids even more fun. I think that young elementary students will really enjoy this story.

Content areas: This book could be used in English to help kids with a writing prompt. You could have students write a short story a

Jennifer Sattler’s book Pig Kahuna is a great story about two pig brothers, Fergus and Dink, who are spending their Saturday at the beach collecting treasures that the waves brought in. They have already found some great things: seaweed, a pebble and a shell, when a surfboard floats up. They decide to grab it and add it to their treasure, but they can’t take it into the water themselves because they are scared of what terrifying creatures might live in there. Fergus and Dink name their surfboard ...more

The story is about two pigs, Fergus and his little brother Dink, who love exploring the beach. As much as they adore the sand, Fergus is afraid of the water and the ickiness that could be hiding in it. The two would collect the treasures they found on the beach: seaweed, shells, and pebbles. On this particular day, Fergus and Dink watched a surfboard wash up onto the shore and added it to their collection. When Fergus left to get him and his brother each an ice cream cone, Dink let the surfboard ...more

I love this book! What originally drew my attention to this book was the title of the book. I thought it was a creative play on words from the Polynesian phrase “big kahuna”. This whimsical story is about two brothers collecting treasures on the beach, who find a surfboard and add it to their collection. With it’s help, they will discover more treasures.

This book has a horizontal orientation, which is fitting for the beach setting. The author/illustrator uses blues, greens, and browns in her ar

These brothers are almost as cute as Olivia, but have their own unique appeal as they use their imagination while playing on the beach.
My favorite line: “...a mean ol’ wave would wash his castle away.” Great opportunity to introduce personification. Great to promote discussions of using one’s imagination and playing with siblings. This older brother is so generous as he cleverly gets Dink out of his bad mood, and then allows him to be captain.
Simple background shows no other people on the beac

Pig Kahuna is Jennifer Sattler's book after Chick 'n' Pug. The art feels even richer (Jennifer is a former landscape painter and her use of a computer in painting is minimal). Older brother Fergus is afraid of the ocean, but when he believes his beloved Dave, the surfboard, is at risk of being lost in the water, Fergus jumps in, heedless of all the "icky" things that might be underneath the surface. His attempt to save Dave is an innocent and simple act of love, and of course, Fergus is reward ...more

When Fergus and his little brother Dink go to the beach, they find an assortment of treasures but not one comparable to the surf board they found. They named him Dave and although they would not go into the water, they found new and innovative uses for him. However, when Fergus goes to get ice cream, Dink feels bad that Dave is not in his home, the ocean. So he pushes him out to sea but Fergus refuses to let Dave go so he swims out to get him. Just as he climbs up on Dave, a huge wave comes and ...more

Jennifer Sattler is the author and illustrator of several picture books including Sylvie, Chick 'n' Pug, Pig Kahuna, Chick 'n' Pug Meet the Dude, Uh-oh, Dodo!, and her latest, Pig Kahuna Pirates.
