In honor of Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Great in depth (Or as indepth as the evasive Allen ever gets anyway) look at Allen's career. Despite the fact that he claims to never watch his films once they're completed Allen's recall is nothing short of startling and unlike the similarly mammoth Altman On Altman no film in Allen's Career is given a short shrift. He raises a spirited defense for even his most loathed films. Great Read.

He writes the film equivalent of chamber music. Sometimes they work: Hannah and Her Sisters, Manhattan, Crimes and Misdemeanors and the hugely enjoyable Annie Hall. I also have soft spots for Radio Days and Interiors, mainly because it is hilarious to watch Maureen Stapleton trample through the film making the other actors look either mannered or comatose. But by the time I saw Midnight in Paris, I was over the usual Woody "bring the upper classes together for serious problems accompanied by dia ...more

The Faber & Faber series is always an educational and personal guide to the classic film directors. I've read six titles so far (covering Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam, David Lynch, Dennis Potter, and Werner Herzog). This one is my favourite, partly due to my admiration for Allen's films, the hefty detail (even if it does skimp out on some of the later films) and also the interesting back-and-forth between Allen and interviewer Stig Bjorkman. While by no means the last word on Allen's films, it ...more

I love this book. It's a great collection of interviews.

Woody Allen has been very productive after 1993, but regarding his background and all his work up to then, this is the ultimate book I think. A nice, flowing and interesting conversation.

At the beginning of this year’s Woodython, I promised to provide a review of some of the Woody literature available in the Dirk archive. Woody Allen on Woody Allen is part of the Faber series featuring directors talking in detail about their work. They have rescued many essays for me in the past as they are a valuable source of quotes and insight straight from the auteurs’ mouth, so to speak. This book is a key text in Woody studies and a great companion piece to the documentary to dip and delve ...more

I've only seen five woody allen movies (Zelig, Annie Hall, Reconstructing Harry, Sweet and Lowdown, and Match Point) but I feel like I've seen them all. I don't know if thats a good thing, but in reading these interviews between the film maker and the Swedish film critic Stig Bjorkman wherein the two go through each and every WA movie from 'Take The Money and Run' to 'Manhattan Murder Mystery', I got a clear sense of what was happening in those movies. Frankly, that wasn't so interesting, and ki ...more

Un adevarat "companion to watching Woody Allen's movies". Mi-ar placea sa revad intr-o buna zi toate filmele sale cu aceasta carte alaturi. De multe ori m-am surprins intrebandu-ma "oare de ce?" in fata unui film ca Celebrity, Stardust Memories sau Crimes and Misdemeanors.

برای ...more

Totally forgot that Annie Hall was originally a murder mystery... Not a whole lot of earth-shattering insights into Allen's style, but some interesting info on how he goes about his process with almost complete artistic freedom. There really needs to be an updated version of this book that covers the most recent 15 years of his work, but that doesn't seem too likely to happen. Either way, it's hard not to hang on the words of a person who almost never gives interviews, even if all you learn is t ...more

This book get's you fully into his work and life behind the scenes and in front of the cameras. you see his thought process who inspired him. His advice and outlook on his life and career. He is his own worst critic and comes off as unsentimental though thatis exactly what his films inspire. This film gave me plenty of inspiration and scarily i found that we have the same outlook on certain subjects and instances. i guess there are worse to be in common with. He is a genius (Though i know he wou ...more

I have the early version of this book, it ends after Manhattan Murder Mystery. It's a great read if you love Woody Allen films. This year ended up being the year I chose to finish watching every Woody Allen movie I hadn't seen and it was absolutely wonderful to watch one of his movies and then pick up this book and read between 5-10 pages about the movie I just watched from W.A.'s own mouth. A good book for a true fan or interested fan.

This is a great book if you are interested in film-making. Outside of his albeit strange personal life, I truly enjoy his artistic abilities, specifically his screen-writing ability. I wanted to get an inside scoop of what is in his head as he creates. Interesting read about someone who is truly passionate about their profession- not because of the money that will come from it, but because they love what they do!

Woody Allen isn't the most self-reflective or forthcoming guy in the world, but it was still interesting to hear him to talk about his films. He goes through each one of his films in chornological order, talking about casting, filming, etc. Probably only interesting if you're obsessed with Woody Allen and have seen all of his films. Yes, I'm a dork.

For the die-hard fans only. Touches on personal details and is blunt about the circumstences surrounding his "September" re-shoot. But not a lot revealed, just some insight into a great artistic mind. Woody is casual and easy going in these interviews, if not entirely forthcoming. A fun read for anyone familiar with his films without having much context for the motivations behind them.

A fast and mostly enjoyable read for anyone who likes the subject involved. No far reaching perceptions or third party misinterpretations. The capable writer/filmmaker who honed his skills over the years to an exceptionally sharp edge, remarks on his life and work. Excellent!

These interviews are fantastic. Woody Allen is, to me, one of the most interesting writers. When he is on his game he is amazing. When he's not, it's almost embarrassing. These gave great insight into how he functions as a filmmaker.

Informative not really about the man himself, but his process of film making which is actually much more simple and straight forward than you would think. Very good if you're a Woody Allen fan or film student.

Not that interesting if you haven't seen much of Allen's work before 2000, as it is my case. However, this book of interviews that punctually analyzes every movie he has made is still a good way of penetrating the mind of one of the most representative filmmakers of our time.

Revealing about Woody Allen the artist in ways that surprised me. Thankfully steers clear of his public and well-chewed personal snafus. A definite recommend for film fans.

A good, close look at an artist at work; how he thinks, who he is influenced by... fascinating read, if you are interested and can forgive him his vices....
