A nice romantic novel. Two friends on the road to being more, but then future plans were stalled because of personal troubles so the relationship goes to limbo. The secrets they kept from each other seemed such an unhealthy way to have a future together so it was hard for me to root for them. But as the story continued, I couldn't help but wish for the couple's success. I'm a sucker for love that way!

The supporting characters functioned well here. The O'Brien family was a hoot. It was also nice...more

Were we really supposed to like Susie? She doesn't have many good qualities. She's a liar, manipulative, selfish, whiney, childish and totally unsupportive of her husband. She was never there for him. No help on the paper, can't make the parties without spoiling them for Mack, can't encourage him yet he couldn't take any job that might take him away from her and her secure little tiny life with her family. She had plenty of strength to build and furnish a house, but nothing for Mack. Yet he had...more

Romancing the Book

I haven’t read the rest of the Chesapeake series but the blurb for this one caught my eye and I decided to give it a try. I will say that, for me, when I read romance I’m looking for escape and while this book is a fantastic story, it really was too deep for what I like to read. For anyone who has dealt with the big C word personally, this story will speak to you.

The loving family members and friends that the series is known for are definitely includ...more

Susie O’Brien and Mack Franklin have been “just friends” for about three years. That is three years too long. Susie and Mack’s friends and family are putting the pressure on these two to admit that they are dating. Susie would like to take things to the next level but she is afraid that Mack sees her as just a good friend. She will not make the first move in case Mack does feel this way and than that will just ruin things between them. It just so happens that Mack is ready also to make things of...more

Both Susie O’Brien and Mack Franklin are ready to change the “non-dating” status they’ve had for years, but each is afraid of ruining a friendship that is precious. Little do they know how important their special connection to each other will become as they face enormous difficulties together. Of course, the O’Brien clan is right there supporting and ‘meddling’ all the way.

Just when Susie gains enough courage to tell Mack there needs to be a change in attitude about “non-dating”, Mack loses his...more

When will I learn that a box of kleenex must be with you at all times when you read one of Sherryl Woods’ books? So word of warning...have them handy, you’ll need them.

Mac and Susie have been exclusively “non-dating” for years. Both have wanted more out of the relationship, but for the sake of their friendship have never pushed for more.

Just when Mac’s ready to push for more (he’s got his symbol for how ready he is already purchased and waiting for that special moment), he loses his beloved jo...more

Woods returns with book 7 of her Chesapeake Shores series. This time the focus is the relationship of the “not dating” couple, Susie O’Brien and Mack Franklin. Mack has finally decided that it is time to act, to move his relationship with Susie from friendship to serious love interest, but almost as soon as he makes this decision, he’s hit with the news that he is the latest victim of newspaper downsizing. His job as sports columnist, the job that redefined him in the eyes of those who knew his...more

Absolutely loved this book, such a emotional read i really had tears in my eyes on many occasions, adored each characters and the way they have their relationships also how the years of resentment and bitterness was solved and how a tragedy brings everyone close

Susie was such a sweet character,my heart went out out her,the way she handled the news and the changes that brought about, also loved the way everyone around her were always filled with positive energy and if any time even one of the family...more

This delightful novel, which is the seventh in Sherryl Wood's Chesapeake Shores series, will be released on May 31, 2011. Beach Lane features the story of Mack Franklin and Susie O'Brien who we have met in the earlier Chesapeake Shores books. Mack and Susie are "just friends" who have been spending time together for years. Everyone seems to know that they are in love and perfect for each other except them. As you can guess, this book follows their love story.

Their lives are thrown into turmoil f...more

Everything always comes easy to Susie O'Brien, or so everyone thinks. One thing that hasn't come easy is moving her relationship with Mack in a new direction. She has set rules in her relationship with Mack for over three years, one of which includes just being friends. When Mack is fired from his prestigious job as a sports reporter in Baltimore, he knows that his relationship with Susie can't become romantic, despite his desire for something more in the relationship. How could it be more when...more

I have never read any Sherryl Woods before and have to admit to being very resistant. But I picked this book up and even though it is in the middle of a series, it seemed that it would be easy to get into. I have to admit to being so pleasantly surprised by this story. I did not have any problems sliding right into the lives of the people in Chesapeake Shores, a designer small town filled with a family by the name of O'Brien. This story follows Susie O'Brien and her best friend Mack Franklin. Th...more

2.5 Stars. I'm a little disappointed with this one.

The first half was excellent and there was a lot of charm and the usual amount of shenanigans that comes with the O'Briens, but this is the first time that we have encountered a genuinely unpleasant character in this series, in the form of Kristen.

Mac was a big disappointment for me. I was shocked that he showed so little foresight and understanding in putting poor Susie in that position in the first place. I thought it was selfish of him and h...more

"Beach Lane" is the sixth installment in the Chesapeake Shores series by Sherryl Woods. It started as a trilogy and has expanded to 2 trilogies, a Christmas book and another Christmas book on the way. This is the story of Mac and Suzie. They have been "not dating" for several years, but spending every possible minute together. In this, their book, they contemplate either ending their non-relationship and moving on, or taking their relationship to the next obvious step and admitting that there re...more

I hate to say it, but I am glad that something forced Susie and Mack out of their whole not dating thing, it was stupid. I did hate to see that it was something so bad though. Even with liking where things were going for these two, I did get annoyed with their not talking to each other about the really important things in their lives. Each argument that they had was due to not really trusting the other and not talking, it got old fast. I also think that Mack was an idiot for bringing the specifi...more

All I can say is wow! What a wonderful story and great end to this year Chesapeake Shores trilogy. Although there were a few chuckles as I read, mainly there were tears. Not just my eyes tearing up but actual tears and they lasted through many a chapter. It was great to see so many of the O'Briens come together for each other once again. I can't wait to read An O'Brien Family Christmas when it comes out this fall and continues the story with characters I've come to love and care about. Add this...more

I don't normally read romances but since I received a copy of this book for free I gave it a go. It was an easy read and had the typical ups and downs of a romance. I had not read any of the others in the Chesapeake Bay series so didn't know the characters but it was easy enough to pick up on who was who and how they were related. Overall, it was well written and a light, fun read. But the angst that the different characters had about not telling their true feelings or worrying about sharing the...more

Beach Lane is one of a series of books about people in a small town in Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay. This novel does work as a stand alone as I have not read any others by her. The basic plot line... two people who never seem to be on the same page, finally are onthe same page only to be struck by a huge crisis. One of the parts that really struck me was that the O'Brien Clan's closeness and protectiveness of each other. Susie and Mack are very lucky they have the entire clan behind them as su...more

This book tugged at my heart strings but, surprisingly, did not make me cry. Another endearing story from Woods, but did not give me the same emotion as Will and Jess' story. I just though that after reading about Mack and Susie for so long that their story would be a bit more.....more. Adding in the siren song of Kristen was nice but she seemed like she was being used as an extra rather than someone who could have really been a serious threat. And Mack being totally clueless about her? Not buyi...more

Another Chesapeake Cove book. Mack and Susie have been friends for a long time They finally make a commitment to each other after Mack loses his job and then Susie has ovarian cancer. The way they deal with these bumps in the road are key to this book. Along with that Susie's brothers have relationships with older women. Gram Nell continues to be the leader of the family.
Many of the characters are known from the earlier books in this series.
It was not quite the story of the previous books in t...more

This was a good installment in the series. Susie & Mack were staple background characters in the other books from this series so I was glad they got their own book. I was also glad that I did not have to spend the whole book knowing the main two people in love were going to fight it until the end, instead they had other battles to face and a different couple got to fight the inevitable in the same book, lol! I have skipped around with this series and need to go back and fill in some gaps, bu...more

Beach Lane is my favorite Cedar Cove books! I always feel like I am returning to Cedar Cove as one of the family each time we visit. Each time we visit someone new is falling in love with someone else and we see them banter back and forth and it all ties up into a very nice bow at the end, which Sherryl Woods has crafted so well.

But this time in Beach Lane we have 2 get together only to battle life, not each other. I think it is different from all the books. Mack and Susie are my favorites! A fe...more

Of all the O'Brians, I went in to this book feeling like I knew very little about Susie. The only thing I was clear on was that she and Mack were "just friends." I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy this book since I didn't feel particularly connected with the characters. Thanks to Ms. Woods deft writing, that changed quickly. It is clear that Mack and Susie are meant to be together, they just need to trust it for themselves. Circumstances force them to step up and fight for the future they both...more

This is the final book of the Cheseapeak sereis and it weaves a tale that grips the heart. Woven into the story are of course the O'Brian's that stick their nose into everything, but it's a good thing. Susie and Mack need lots of help. They are having lots of problems, mainly a certain someone who is determined to take Mack away from Susie. I've had a wonderful time reading all about the O'Brian's. And does Susie and Mack stay together? What is the devastating diagnose Susie gets? You'll have to...more

I didn't know that I'd care as much about this "leg" of the O'Brien family... as we haven't seen much of Susie, even though readers of the series are familiar with the "Not Dating" dating they had been doing.

All in all, I liked the story. It was sweet and sad. I found myself tearing up several times throughout. I do love when a bad boy, or naughty boy is redeemed to such a degree that Mack does. I mean, his unwavering devotion to Susie was a big highlight for me!

What an amazing read. Just when I thought I'd had enough of the O'Briens, Beach Lane comes along.

Sherryl Woods talent is never in question. She takes the ordinary and makes it memorable. No car chases. No mistaken identities. Just everyday people in everyday situations, written in such a way that you WANT to spend time with them, learn about each one, and perhaps even learn about yourself and your own friends and family as you compare Ms. Woods well-drawn characters with your own.

But the trick...more

Two friends who want to be more than friends both have personal setbacks that make it hard for them to commit to being more than friends. With help from their large families, the romance is on.
I checked this out from the library as I thought it would be a good beach read. I cried a lot through the 2nd half of the book. Without giving away part of the plot, I'll just say that one of the character's setbacks just hit a little too close to home.

This was possibly my favorite of the entire series on the O'Brian clan. Unlike the others, this romance has been brewing for quite some time. Susie and Mack may rush through the formalities of a marriage, but the true development of their relationship is whether they can build a life with each with love and support. Despite the extenuating circumstances, their "problems" seemed more real to life than many of the others I've read in this series.

This book brought out a lot of emotions in me. I found myself crying a few times. The story is heart retching but romantic an sweet. I was very happy with the ending. The only reason it gets a 3 out of 5 is because the whole what if he doesn't love me or the what if I show my emotions to him and he hurts me worries get a little over done and annoying. It could of been so much better if there was less whining from Suzie about how Mack felt about her!

With two other careers to her credit before becoming a novelist and four states in which she's lived for extended periods of time, Sherryl Woods has collected friends and memories, along with way too much unnecessary junk.

"The friends are the only things I've brought with me through the years that really matter," she says. "I could probably live without one more chintz teacup, another tin-litho sa...more
