I did not like the protagonist of "Hunter's Run" at all. Of course, that was the point. By the end of the book I did find myself respecting and rooting for him, but still not liking him.
The sci-fi elements of this book don't get in the way of the story, as they do with some books in this genre. (I'm not a huge sci-fi fan, really, so when it devolves into nothing but aliens and future technology my brain shuts off for some reason.) Ramon Espejo is drinking at a local bar, the El Rey, and gets into a bar fight with a European Ambassador. As Ramon says later in the novel, the Ambassador simply “didn't know it was knife fight.” Ramon kills him in the alley.

Desperate to escape the law Ramon decides to leave civilization behind for a little while and go prospecting. The local authorities, for their part, are desperate to catch and prosecute someone for the crime- anyone- because the Silver Enye are arriving on the planet soon and they want to maintain a semblance of law and order before the alien visit.

Ramon is certain on this run, as he is certain on every run, that this will be the “big one” the one where he finds a rich mineral load and becomes rich himself. As he is traveling he notices something peculiar in the rock formations and decides to investigate. He sets a charge, but when it goes off he finds much more than he bargained for.

For hiding on that planet is yet another sentient alien race that has been hiding from the Silver Enye for hundreds of years. By finding them Ramon threatens the safety of an entire alien race. They can't allow him to expose their secret. But discovering a new and bizarre alien race is only the tip of the iceberg for Ramon, things are about to get a lot more complicated.

Hunter's Run is a hard core science fiction story full of alien races and species, new alien words and concepts, and strange alien behaviors. It will appeal to fans of strong science fiction and those that enjoy a story full of alien milieu and new discoveries.

There are also deep philosophical currents in the story, including the reoccurring question, “under what conditions do you kill?” The rough and calloused exterior that Ramon shows throughout the novel is not the only emotion dictating what he does, and he must often remind himself that he is “Ramon Espejo, a though sonofabitch.” But, who IS Ramon Espejo really? Hunter’s Run by George R. R. Martin, Daniel Abraham, and Gardner Dozois is adventure science fiction at its best. The story has substance, excitement and humor. It’s approachable, lacking all the tech mumbo jumbo that turns a lot of people off the genre. Hunter’s Run is just a good book—one that I would definitely recommend to people who might not usually be interested in the genre

I was taken by surprise at several points during the story. I don’t want to ruin anything by giving these twists away, but just so you know, they are fabulous. It’s not often that I get so lost in a story that I don’t see what’s coming.

Ramon was a fascinating character. In most books, he would be the villain, but here, we get to delve into his story and see him for the complicated character that he really is. You grow to like him over the course of the story just as he grows to like himself.

There is humor in this sometimes disturbing story. Maneck weirdly reminded me a lot of Castiel from Supernatural. He was so matter of faction in his confusion. I found myself snorting on more than one occasion at his reactions to Ramon.

Overall, I really liked this book. There might have been a few times where the story lagged, but I never got so bored that I found it hard to pick the book back up again. Usually, I found myself wanting to read just one more chapter before putting it down and then, of course, wanting to read just one more chapter after that. If that isn’t a mark of a good book, I don’t know what is.

I enjoyed this book, and if I could would probably rate this 3 1/2, rather than just 3 stars. It is a collaborative work between three authors, and was done without any messiness I was expecting from the cooks. Uninspiring shovelware. For starters the protagonist is an anti-hero, which never works particularly well for me: I'd rather be inspired by a character who is better (smarter, braver, more ethical...) than I am than examine the twisted psyche of an uneducated criminal.

Then the larger picture seems like it might be intriguing... but it is never fully revealed or explained clearly because the POV is limited to the brutish main character.

Too many see the name George R.R. Martin and think, "Song of Ice and Fire!" While those books are incredible, Martin, Dozois, and Abraham all have an impressive resume with other works. This book should be considered among them. The story of Ramon Espejo, and his journey through the wilderness with Maneck and beyond is certainly a compelling one. The world of Sao Paulo and the backstory of this universe is all expertly crafted, but like other works by these authors, the character is the heart.

I don't know how much Martin contributed to this book (I haven't read the other two authors), but if he ever finishes his current fantasy series, he might do well as a sci-fi writer. Far from being another space opera, Hunter's Run is written in a gritty, Hemingway-esque style that builds psychological drama on top of simple scenes involving one or two characters. It also includes some aliens who really are rather alien, and the writing's pretty effective for sci-fi.

To popular culture, this book doesn't have much going for it. It's science fiction, the premise is hokey, and the characters aren't sympathetic. Did I mention it's science fiction? Give it some credit, though. Where other than scifi can a badass face off against himself? Ramón Espejo is quite a character. He's mean, violent, sneaky, foulmouthed, and more than a little sociopathic, and the entire book is about him. The character development is slow, kicking in maybe halfway through the book, and it's not exactly subtle. What's interesting is the way that you can see the clone developing alongside the human who is unchanging.

The writing in the book is really good. There isn't unnecessary development or description; everything is to the point, moving the plot at a good pace. The writing is not artistic, but allows you to sink into the reality of Sao Paulo. The plot, while somewhat hard to swallow from outside, is really well handled. There's a small amount of set-up at the beginning of the novel, but just enough to get you into the plot and introduce the players. The only real "complaint" I might make is that the scifi elements are rather weak. There's no deep discussions of fancy technology, no battles through the depths of space, and the world is really quite like our own. However, all of this just allows the reader to focus more on the concepts being presented. Weighty matters like self and identity come up for a rare appearance in a scifi novel. The hokey elements are handled delicately enough that you don't even realize they're hokey while you're reading. By the end of the book, I found myself cheering for the unlikeable Ramón. The book is a well-contained novel that doesn't leave you hanging or really even wanting much more from the story. (less)

I have to appreciate this book for its solid accomplishments. It manages simultaneously and old school hard slog in the outback vs the aliens while at the same time being perfectly in tune with more recent(ly publishable as sci fi) notions about self identity and political correctness.

Don't go thinking this is some heavy shit-- it's just deep enough to satisfy a modern middlebrow reader. Very bad bath and beyond level sf. This too is quite an accomplishment.

This is a really good story! I'm glad I picked it up on a whim while walking along a shelf at my local library.

R. Martin (one of the few authors I can say are "My all-time favorite writers", check my shelf of that name to see who they are).

This book wasn't exactly what I was searching for when I thought of reading a hardcore Sci-Fi novel, but it ended up finding a warm comfy pla...more I picked this book up for two reasons: 1)I had been saying for months now that I needed a good hardcore Sci-Fi read (after a very long stretch of Fantasy and its various sub-genre's) and 2) because it was co-authored by George R. R. Martin (one of the few authors I can say are "My all-time favorite writers", check my shelf of that name to see who they are).

This book wasn't exactly what I was searching for when I thought of reading a hardcore Sci-Fi novel, but it ended up finding a warm comfy place inside my head all the same. Please, don't let that last remark make you think I don't consider this a Hardcore Sci-Fi novel, because it most assuredly is. There are aliens cultures/races (at least 2 different kinds scene, and a 3rd kind are described), alien worlds, flying vans, FTL travel, beam weapons, alien creatures, cloning, and a few more staples of the genre that I'm sure I'm forgetting to mention. That being said, this book has some fairly strong Noir elements to it as well. Of course I am a huge fan of crossing genres (much safer than crossing streams), so I liked the marriage of the two.

This story is entirely from the perspective of Ramon Espejo. This perspective is a nice change from what I've been reading lately, and really allows you to get to know and sympathize with Ramon. From the outside he's a hard character to sympathise with, being a boastful, ill tempered, semi-bumb fueled by his dislike for the rest of humanity and his own sense of machismo. Yet of course you come to find out that much of this is a defense mechanism for him, and its hard to entirely hate him once you see the humanity inside of him.

Of course you are treated to these insights in to Ramon's character while on the run from alien enemies through (a different) alien wilderness. It really comes down to being a human(ity) driven alien Sci-Fi story, about how different and the same things are throughout the galaxy. And it has two of the more original seeming alien races I've ever encountered in Sci-fi.

One note before I end this review. I'm a little annoyed that the other two authors of this book don't get credited as authors on Goodreads.com. Gardner Dozois and Daniel Abraham, for all I know about the process involved in the making of this book, did just as much writing as George R.R. Martin. Yet they get no mention here, and that is sad. Hopefully a complaint to Goodreads.com will fix it.(less)

I really enjoyed this book except for the vulgar language, I generally think of curse words as the sign of a weak writer, but in this case I know for a fact that Dozois and Martin, at least, are not weak writers. I am certain that they would explain as a character trait of Ramon, and I understand that having known people who do speak that way. Still, it was off-putting while reading and is what kept this book from being a five.

I picked up this book because of my enjoyment of both George RR Martin's and Daniel Abraham's other books. This was not a disappointment. The three authors together create a vivid world with a good back story. The characters are well developed and sympathetic. The book started out pretty good. It gave you a real baseline for what the character was all about. You could definitly see the development of the character, with a determined streak not to change. My favorite part of this book is what most reviewers seem to dislike the most: the main character. Ramon Espejo is a pretty despicable human being. He's a murderer and a criminal, but I'll be damned if he doesn't provide an entertaining point of view. Maybe I've gotten to the point where I've read too much typical fiction with do-gooder protagonists that an a**hole is just what I needed. And even if he is an a**hole, he is funny and has some great dialogue, especially with his travelling companion/captor (who for the sake of not spoiling, I will not reveal here.) And as the story progresses, even though he is still sort of despicable, he does have an epiphany of sorts that changes him as a person. On the basis of how he thought and how he acted, his decisions were believable and I thought his progression as a character was really well done.

The actual story, which I can't speak much on because I'd give it away, is also well done. It is a nice tight plot that flows well from start to finish. There is some good action and some crazy situations, but given the circumstances, there is nothing unbelievable. By the end of Hunter's Run, I was left a little disappointed that it had ended but in no way dissatisfied with the ending. There are no loose ends and it is its own complete story.

This really teeters on the edge between a 4 star and a 5 star book. I'd have to say I'll give it 4.5 stars and curse goodreads for not having a more intricate rating system. Pretty much the only reason I gave it 4 and not 5 is that considering the prose of Martin and Abraham, the writing could have been better. Don't get me wrong, the writing isn't bad, it's just not on par with Song of Ice and Fire or Abraham's very eloquent style in the Long Price Quartet. Toward the beginning of the story, the writing seemed a little lazy and hurried, like there were more details that could have been included. But as the story progressed and the main character began to develop, the writing almost seemed to get better, so perhaps all of this was intended. The same can almost be said about the story itself. It's rare that the reader actually wants more time to be spent in the development of the characters and setting before the story really gets started, but I felt at the beginning it moved a little too quickly. Once the story gets moving however, I forgot all about that. I think the only other thing that keeps it out of 5 star territory is that it's not quite as grand nor the scope quite as great as some of the books that I consider 5 star.

I'd really be interested to know how three authors actually piece together a book like this, what the writing process is. (Okay, so let's take a drunken a-hole down on his luck, a backwater prospecting planet, and some really bizarre aliens... go!) In any case, the outcome is great. Despite my somewhat indecisive misgivings, I'd recommend this book to any sci-fi fan.(less)

This book got off to such a slow start that only the reputations of the authors kept me from walking away from it. I'm glad I stuck around for the protagonist's first departure from Diegotown, though; the story quickly evolved into a clever, engaging, sometimes-surprising journey that left me staying up well past bedtime -- and NOT feeling regretful about it as I trudged bleary-eyed to work the next morning.

Not my kind of story,but I ended up with it in my pile of library books.It was pretty good.I could see a few of my male friends reading/enjoying it.Sci-fict. alot of gritty images,aliens living in the middle of our earth,men on the run,trying to keep out of the clutches of these aliens,all in all ,kept me entertained.3 writers involved,you would think too many cooks spoil the broth,but it turned out to be a good read. Cannot say I will search for any other books like this,but no regrets.

[7/10] Solid adventure in the beginning with some good riffs later in the story on the themes of identity, responsibility for your own actions and morality. A little bland in style for the first chapters, but short enough and interesting enough in the later developments. The afterword and the end interviews do a good job of explaining why it needed 3 authors and 30 years to come to print.
It could be said to share some elements with Enemy Mine and with Left Hand of Darkness

It's a shame that I think a book written in part by one of my favourite authors, George R. R. Martin, would be flawed and rather flimsy. Given that this book was actually written as a novella and then expanded in collaboration with two other authors though, one has to wonder if the original idea was lost somewhere along the way. It does feel like that though as this book felt more like it was about transporting the reader into a rainforest-like trek set in a colony world, than it was for the adv...more

An interesting character-study set in a convincing world of oppression, examining on a manageable scale questions of identity--both individual and as a species--and how our errors create us. The main character is hardly a likeable one, but he is, as he frequently remarks, one tough sonofabitch, and as his story and circumstances unfold, he can even be sympathetic. The adventure is inventive and the questions raised leave the reader with food for thought.

George R. R. Martin was born September 20, 1948, in Bayonne, New Jersey. His father was Raymond Collins Martin, a longshoreman, and his mother was Margaret Brady Martin. He has two sisters, Darleen Martin Lapinski and Janet Martin Patten.

He has two sisters, Darleen Martin Lapinski and Janet Martin Patten.

Martin attended Mary Jane Donohoe School and Marist High School. He began writing very young, selling monster stories to other neighborhood children for pennies, dramatic readings included. Later he became a comic book fan and collector in high school, and began to write fiction for comic fanzines (amateur fan magazines). Martin's first professional sale was made in 1970 at age 21: "The Hero," sold to Galaxy, published in February, 1971 issue. Other sales followed.

In 1970 Martin received a B.S. in Journalism from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, graduating summa cum laude. He went on to complete a M.S. in Journalism in 1971, also from Northwestern.

As a conscientious objector, Martin did alternative service 1972-1974 with VISTA, attached to Cook County Legal Assistance Foundation. He also directed chess tournaments for the Continental Chess Association from 1973-1976, and was a Journalism instructor at Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa, from 1976-1978. He wrote part-time throughout the 1970s while working as a VISTA Volunteer, chess director, and teacher.

In 1975 he married Gale Burnick. They divorced in 1979, with no children. Martin became a full-time writer in 1979. He was writer-in-residence at Clarke College from 1978-79.

Moving on to Hollywood, Martin signed on as a story editor for Twilight Zone at CBS Television in 1986. In 1987 Martin became an Executive Story Consultant for Beauty and the Beast at CBS. In 1988 he became a Producer for Beauty and the Beast, then in 1989 moved up to Co-Supervising Producer. He was Executive Producer for Doorways, a pilot which he wrote for Columbia Pictures Television, which was filmed during 1992-93.

Martin's present home is Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is a member of Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (he was South-Central Regional Director 1977-1979, and Vice President 1996-1998), and of Writers' Guild of America, West.
