Lynne Van Wagenen
My horse-crazy 9-year-old bought this book with her Christmas money. She reads at about a 6th grade level but found that it was too complex for her to read alone. So I read it to her.

This story is narrated by a very erudite stallion who uses long words and complex sentences. It takes place during WWII, and I found that I had to explain a lot of that history to my daughter so she would understand the dialog and interpersonal tensions in the plot. She asked me if she would get to learn about WWII
This is the story of one of the white stallions of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, Austria. The story is set during the 1930's. It is the adventures of this stallion and his stablemates during the war. It is a good book.

Her first novel, A Horse of Her Own, was praised by Kirkus as “possibly the most honest horse book since National Velvet . . . A champion.” She is also the author of The Breyer Horse Collection books, including Wi ...more
