I usually do not read novellas because I run into the problem I did with Space Junque......the story was GREAT and I didn't want it to end!
This adventure/romance story and it's characters pull you in quickly and won't let go. I will be recommending this book and and all of L.K.Rigel works to my Book Worms group.
I can't wait to pick up Spiderwork!!!!

Loved this novelette. The writing is pretty tight, and it's an interesting story of near-future eco-disaster, eco-terrorism, and space adventure. Woven through the story is a small romance. There's a lot of good story here, and I wish it had been developed more slowly, fleshing out some of the background, such as the Defenders of Gaia, the Talibanos Unidos, and the various orbiting stations. It's almost as if this story is written as an interlude (one can hope?) Clearly, the other unexplained el...more
I actually read the first chapter of Space Junque a while back on a blog that I follow. I remember wanting to finish reading it when I was able to pick up a copy of the book and things came up and I just wasn't able to get around to it. Gosh I'm kicking myself now! lol.
I really enjoyed this one. The future Rigel has envisioned is enthralling. I loved the world she has created. It has so many possibilities. I can't wait to read future books in this series and see more of it. I want to find out w...more

In her debut indie paranormal genre, LK Rigel takes on a fast, fun and sexy journey through space.
Char, need to leave earth NOW! Things have changed dramatically in the past years, with mutations to the human race and the animals Earth is no longer safe for anyone to live, especially if they are using technology, as there is a Rebel group call DOGs who want to see technology purged from Earth. Her last hope is to reach the shuttle leading to the universal space station, but any technology could...more

This was the weirdest story I've read in ages...it starts up as a pretty decent SFR with the majority(90%) of the story coming from the heroine's perspective , with imperial forces, nuclear weapons, mysteries, space ships ( yay!) an alright heroine, a better hero, and a pretty decent if a bit vague story....then some god like character gets introduced and everything goes to hell...a really weird hell. Wow. Just WOW. That's about all I can say about Space Junque.. The end.
You know how I rail against how badly Indies are regarded by the publishing industry? Well, I'm going to tell you a secret. I do a little of it too. I have read so many Indie books that I don't put up here which are unedited and un-thought-through. Someone's mom told them it was good so they hit "publish" on smashwords. Uggh.

I read it twice to make sure i got everything! It's a short but very full novella.
Char's sister's fiance, Mike, arranges for her to be taken off-world to the Imperial Space Station. (Char believes Mike is a benign middle mgt bureaucrat.) Very good ebook about the end of civilization as we know it starting with the Gulf Oil Spill of 2010. I thought it was a nice touch to bring the use of dispersants used there into the mix of the story.
By 2095 there is one world government, the Imperium, ruled by a corrupt emperor. Space stations offer vacations to the rich or well-connected. Hydroponic stations grow food.
But corporations really rule the world. The biggest is Garrick - the only one still allowed to drill for oil.

Space Junque is the first book in the Apocalypto series. It's a short read – a novella set in the future. I've never read science fiction before, but this was pretty interesting. It's basically the end of the world and Char has to leave Earth. Since all of this is set off by the oil spill that happened in 2010, a real event, I think that makes this story that much more interesting. It's crazy to think about people actually living in space. It's a very imaginative story.

This is probably going to be one of the most disjointed reviews I've ever written because I honestly can't figure out whether I liked this book or not. So, yeah. Be warned.
One of the things that really pulled me out of the story was that there was a TON (a literal ton. I was crushed by it) of worldbuilding within the first part of the book. It wasn't like when I go "A ton of worldbuilding! Yay!" It was more like, "Oh, holy pancakes! I don't know what's happening here!" There are ghosts (mutant h...more

I downloaded this book because the author was gracious enough to give me a copy of the third book in the series. She was having a giveaway and even though I was late to the game she gave me a copy anyway. At the time I did not realize it was the third book, but because she was so kind as to give me a copy even though I missed the cut off for the giveaway, I decided I should do the whole series justice and start from the beginning.

Space Junque is a swiftly paced and engaging adventure starring both a world and a character in transition.

I saw this posted up on the Kindle group over at GoodReads. Science fiction isn’t normally something I am excited about and therefore is not something I am normally curious about when I come across suggestions or postings on little-known books within the genre. So it was a different experience for me to have this catch my eye. First, it’s title was something I was very curious about. What exactly is a Space Junque...more

I was contacted by the author and I’ll admit that I wasn’t sure about the book based on the title. This book was a rare did-not-finish for me. I got about 80% in and just couldn't go further. There was just a huge disconnect between myself and the storyline and characters. The characters themselves felt disconnected from their own story and everything that was happening around them. The world building was done without contextual clues or explanation, so it felt as if I was constantly having to make guesses or if I was missing out on some private joke. It made for a slightly uncomfortable read...more

The Good:
This book was very engaging, in the fact that I wanted to keep reading to see what would happen next. I felt the book really picked up after the first action scene. For a novella I fel this was a great story told in a short amount of time. I really like the end of the world type thing as the DOG could be a reality and how the world comes to a collapse could be plausible. Overall the plot was amazing and the story was engaging.
The Bad:

Don’t get me wrong based on the stars I gave this book. I liked it, and it kept me entertained for quite a while. As a matter of fact, despite some of the complaints about how it went from almost a military science fiction to a fantasy world of gods and goddesses, I liked that. The book does say it is a “Dystopian Fantasy”. There were a lot of interesting concepts in this book described, and I mostly liked main character, Char.

As a general rule to myself, I can't really give short stories more than three stars. It's not that they're not good (though most I've read aren't), but that I feel like the author hasn't included enough detail to truly flesh the story out. They're so fast paced--sometimes excitingly so--but it's more like a short adrenaline rush as opposed to the potential full-on emotional roller coaster a longer story can incite.

This book was weird. There were tons of characters, lots of acronyms to learn, and a plot that went by at almost whiplash speed.
And yet, somehow, I still really, really enjoyed it.
I picked this up awhile ago. I don't read a lot of sci-fi, but the cover art on its sequel, Spiderwork, drew me in. (Yeah, sad, I know. But it's the truth.) Today I was looking for a shorter read (this is a novella), so I decided to finally give it a try.

This is a pretty decent short story and since it's free I certainly don't feel cheated out of anything, time included. I'd say it's pretty important to read the little blurb first before diving in because it doesn't really explain what's going on in the beginning and you can feel little out of the loop. The premise is pretty interesting and I like how the world is basically evolving thanks to the stupidity of man (nuclear weapons being thrown about). There were moments where I was seriously conf...more
I really liked certain aspects of this book. There was complicated world building an array of unique characters. Unfortunately, the things that made this book interesting were also the things that lacked. The world building was not well fleshed out, leaving me scrambling after the strange terminology, not really understanding what it was referring to. The characters didn't portray a lot of emotion, which made it hard for me to really care about any of them... i was just along for the ride. The p...more
Space Junque hooked me right into the story and the world; I liked how the author created a future both recognizable and horrifying to a reader of today. It reminded me of the works of Sheri Tepper, which to those who know my reading taste is high praise indeed. I didn’t find it to be as complex and intricate as Tepper’s longer works, but the type of world and the issues characters faced were similar, especially the kind of creepy paranormal element, which I won’t spoil here. The romance made me...more

The basic story could have been interesting, but it was poorly executed. The writing was choppy, and the switch from scene to scene very abrupt. The characters and plot line were underdeveloped. I constantly troll Amazon for free kindle book and more often than not I can't say I much enjoy them, but Space Junque surprised me and I have to say I very much enjoyed the world building and the characters alike. It's a quick read, but that doesn't detract from the story in the least. If anything it makes you want to read the rest of the series more. You get glimpses into each character that make you want to see the whole picture even of the characters you love to hate. The mythology intertwin...more

Unfortunately, her timing is a bit off, and the attack occurs while she is at the airport. Saved by Jake, the pilot of the Space Junque, he flies her to her destination. Amidst the terrorist attacks, ancient gods appear to take control. Will Char survive the attacks, an encounter with the newly emerged goddess and the two men suddenly competing for her attention?

Really really like it. I've been getting into the whole post-apocolyptic/ end of the world type books and this one was one of the better ones that I've read. Really like the chemistry between Jake & Char. The goddess and Empanii part was a little...creepy I guess is the only word I can think to describe it. But still a really good part of the story.
