I have no doubt that some of this book is completely true. The utterly fascinating story of a man whose feigned nonchalance verges on giving the impression of imbecility, yet who has accumulated a net worth of nearly £2 billion over the decades from his steering of Formula 1. His success can certainly be attributed, in part, to that equivocal nonchalance, but it also makes a biographer's task challenging. Just as the biography cites examples where Ecclestone either misled journalists, or at leas...more

Bower was alongside Ecclestone as he meandered through the Monaco Grand Prix last year, and that is where the biography begins, following Bernie as he hobnobs with the rich and famous. It's a jarring way to begin the story, a first chapter filled with assumed knowledge and irrelevant characters. As a glimpse of Bernie's presumably hectic and celebrity filled life, it does the job, but as a reader, it is about as off putting as a first chapter can be.

Thankfully, from the second chapter onwards, t...more

Bernie Ecclestone - the little grey bloke you see being interviewed by Martin Brundle before each grand prix. But there's much more to Bernie than you see in those 30-second clips. Not for nothing is this subtitled 'The Secret Life...'

This is the story of how Ecclestone started out as an Arthur Daley-style used car dealer in South London and became one of the richest men in the world. Along the way he took Formula One from being a badly organised sport to a multi-billion pound global business....more

As a lifelong fan of Formula 1, I read anything I can on the subject in particular the Drivers and other personalities, foremost in the latter category is Bernie Ecclestone, who now in his 80's he continues to reign supreme over the multi-Billion dollar business which is F1 Grand Prix racing.
He is your archetypal 'Diamond geezer' from London's East End, his lack of stature disguises his hard-nosed attitude to business. He gives the impression, of not caring if he double-crosses anyone in his pr...more

Unless you are interested in Formula 1 racing then this book is not for you, but if you want a glimpse at how a minority racing sport became a global sport with countries paying millions just to host it, then this will open your eyes and show how one person brokered deals, manipulated powerful people and avoided no end of legal problems to create a entertainment phenomenom.

I have only got into this sport over the last 4 - 5 years and as this books cover right upto Nov 2010 you recognise a lot of...more

An interesting perspective, but as a Formula 1 fan, too many inaccuracies. You don't get the impression that Bower has a real understanding of the sport, so how could he have a similar appreciation for Ecclestone's empire?

Reading this expose has dramatically increased my fascination with Formula 1...and I've been a huge fan since 1975. Should be the standard text for anyone who wants to understand what Formula One is, and why Nascar isn't.

A comprehensive, open and honest insight to Bernie. I was left with a mixed feeling of awe and disgust. Great writing of an interesting character will always provoke more than one emotion and conclusion, and Tom Bower has nailed this in spades.

Fascinating biography of Ecclestone. A completely despicable man, and yet he is the one who has made F1 what it is today.

Being a fan of F1 since the early eighties, I was interested in finding out more about its 'ringmaster'. No Angel is a fascinating and sometimes disconcerting insight into Bernie Ecclestone’s involvement and background, as well as that of others involved in it.

Not always an easy read, but it was worth the effort to gain an insight into a 'sport' that I follow 20 weekends a year.

A must read for anyone involved with or interested in Formula 1.
