Given the unadulterated dreck that's so often foisted on fans of thriller/detective/murder mysteries - especially in the case of POD and self-published novels whose authors often have barely enough talent to write a check - *The Chemistry of Death* has one very important thing going for it: Beckett actually understands how to craft a decent English sentence. Unfortunately, two faults bog it down and keep it from being a star in the genre. First, no one has ever taught Beckett to murder his darli ...more

This book grabbed me from the first page and never released its hold. Full of suspense, forensics and macabre rituals, it kept me guessing right till the end - I actually gasped at the reveal! It’s gory in places, shocking too, but it’s also warm (if that’s not too bizarre), intelligent and user-friendly - a thriller that makes you think and feel, rather than a straight forward chilling frenzy.

This is the first in a series, and I hope the next book Written in Bone is as compelli

This is another of my vacation reads that I am finally getting around to reviewing.

Saved by a big Finish - 2 Stars

It has taken me a while to get around to reviewing this one. The main reason is that I have been trying to think of something interesting to say about my experience. Problem is, there is not much interesting content to discuss.

The Plot

In this story we have David Hunter, a forensic anthropologist who tries to escape a painful past by taking the position of a small town family d

The first in Beckett’s David Hunter series, this is a fast-paced thriller set in rural Norfolk. It tells the story of Dr David Hunter, who has left his career as a forensic anthropologist in London following a personal tragedy and works as a general practitioner in a small village. When the mutilated body of a local woman is discovered, he is reluctantly drawn into the police investigation.

This novel has some attractive features. Beckett can write decent prose, his grasp of the technicalities o
This used to be a bestseller. I am very sceptical about bestsellers, because they were written for the masses. And if it's written for everybody to understand, it's usually stupid, generic and predictable. But even though this books had many flaws I actually enjoyed it, because it was written really well. The idea, the setting and the characters were shallow to be honest, but the atmosphere of the book was its major quality. Whenever you opened the book, you could dive in into Manham, the place ...more

This was a chore to read.
I just couldn't get into it. :(
I recently read Mr. Beckett's third book in this series, Whispers of the Dead, & enjoyed it enormously which inspired me to go back & grab the first two.

The Chemistry of Death is the first in the series starring David Hunter, British forensic anthropologist. I love books with forensic detail & these are right up my alley.

I love the fact that this book starts out with one of my favorite beginnings in literature: Our hero (or heroine), escaping from a tragedy & into a new life acce

The first page is admittedly pretty gruesome, but quickly this becomes just an excellent psychological suspense novel. In a small and remote English village, everyone knows one another and there isn't much to do. Despite its bucolic setting, it is not as idyllic as it seems. A new doctor, trained in the USA's Tennessee Body Farm in forensic anthropology is reluctantly drawn into a murder case, and then another. Now there is a third missing person. Mistrust, a touch of romance, friendship boundar ...more
Dobar krimić! Poznata priča, malo mirno mjestašce u Engleskoj, počinju serijska, brutalna ubojstva... Tko je od mještana psycho killer.. ;) ? Preporuka ljubiteljima žanra..

Izvrstan krimić, odličan stil pisanja uz onoliko napetosti koliko treba. Ljubitelji žanra ovo moraju staviti na popis. Tea, hvala na posudbi!

I really enjoyed this book, I felt there was a quality about Beckett's writing that was very descriptive, not just in the details of Hunter's findings, but in the way he portrayed the Norfolk village of Manham and its inhabitants. Dr David Hunter is a forensic anthropologist, one of only a handful of Brits who have studied at the Body Farm in the US, where the FBI use human cadavers to study the decomposition of the body, how long it takes, the way it decomposes etc. But at the opening of this f ...more

I loved this book. And my cousin, who doesn't read very much but is trying to read more, loves it too. I believe he even said something along the lines of how it's a pity this book isn't more famous, because it's as good or better than some of the best-sellers out there.

The very first paragraph (which in literature is very important, since it sets the tone for the novel and helps the reader to decide if they're going to like the book), is arresting. The descriptions are graphic, but also curiou

I read a review for this book, which I stumbled upon and took a closer look at, and decided to give it a go. This was a refreshing read, having just finished a Chris Mooney series, set in a small English country village, a Doctor who came there to get away from his tragic past and who leaves behind the big city (London) and his previous career as a Forensic Anthropology. He takes up a post as a G.P., in partnership with a doctor who has had a car accident, that has left him wheelchair bound. Soo ...more

For those nights when you're too tired or too sick or too sick and tired to leave the house, and you want something quick in the crime vein, then this book might do the trick.

On the whole, however, it's not that good. The best thing about it is that you can read it in one quick gulp. (It *is* a page-turner, after all.) The disappointing thing is that it might have been a lot more interesting than it is. There's lots of CSI-y type detail (the protagonist is a former "forensic anthropologist"--a t

I've read the sequel to this already and thoroughly enjoyed it, so went back to catch this one. David Hunter moved from London to rural Norfolk three years before to escape his life after his wife and daughter were killed by a drunk driver. Hunter was a forensic anthropologist, but has taken on a job as a simple country doctor.
When a woman's body is discovered in the woods near where he lives, he struggles to not get involved, but under police pressure agrees to help with the enquiry. Life in th
Another fantastic read courtesy of Simon Beckett.
I loved every aspect of this story; the character of Dr. David Hunter, a man with a tragic past (but isn't all whiney about it, just very English), the forensic anthropology, the rural English setting (he also describes the claustrophobia that often comes with living in a small, isolated village perfectly) and the super-creepy murders, all off-set superbly by warped ritual activity and a genuinely unexpected conclusion.
