5+ stars – Historical Romance

I really enjoyed (loved!) this touching, emotional read of two childhood best friends turned sweethearts of opposing social classes whose love is torn apart by unfair prejudices, society rules and expectations, secrets, lies, mistrust, pride, and vanity.

I loved McKenna, even when he was plotting Lady Aline’s ruin and being a cruel alpha, and his volatile and intense emotional reactions were so brutally honest and heartbreaking. Aline’s staunch secrecy and foolish pr...more

4.5 stars. The only thing which kept me from holding back on a 5 star is that I missed the frequent humor which I've loved in other books by this author. The reason I consistently recommend Kleypas to friends of mine who don't read historical romance is because many of her books have it all : good story, steamy romance, and plenty of moments which will make you laugh.

That said, this is still probably my favorite Kleypas to date. I had tears come to my eyes quite frequently while reading. From th...more

Imagine having loved someone at a young age, but you both realize that it was a forbidden type of love and at the time, you thought that the only way to protect your lover is to drive them away from your life. Well, that is what had happened in Lisa Kleypas’ historical romance novel, “Again the Magic.” “Again the Magic” has drama, romance, lies, secrets and excitement that outshines from most romance novels ever written and it will have you waiting in anticipation as you read this book!

Lisa Kleypas has done it again, and in a big way. Again the Magic is a wonderful story with so many dimensions and so much depth that I was up until the wee hours of the morning, unable to put it down. This story is actually a “prequel” to the Wallflowers series. While I’ve never seen it listed as a numbered book in the series, the characters in Again the Magic are featured heavily in It Happened One Autumn, book 2 of the Wallflowers, as well as in the other Wallflower novels.

There are so many g...more

Boy did I love this one, but the TSTL heroine almost ruined it for me! Oh Aline, what you put poor McKenna through...

My thoughts...

I should have known what I was in for, after blubbering and sniffing my way through the first 3 chapters--this was one angsty read! I totally fell for (John) McKenna, who went from bastard stableboy in love with a beautiful, unattainable daughter of a duke, to millionaire American in 12 short years. When 19 year old Lady Aline Marsden sent young McKenna away (and how...more

This book was phe-no-men-al! We’re talking an A+ read here! It starts out quick so that you’re right into the thick of it all and it just keeps you turning those pages to see what’s going to happen. Don’t start this book in the evening because unless you’re a super fast reader you will not be sleeping any time soon!

McKenna is one wicked hero. He’s so intense and not afraid to tell Aline that he loves her. He cries, he laughs, he broods —he’s just one amazing alpha! His deep-seated hatred for Ali...more

This read makes me feel again the magic which only Lisa Kleypas, herself, can ever deliver.

To prove a point, I utterly feel like a little girl, who had a taste of sweet and irrisistable candy, which takes almost a day to finish. Well of course, being the selfish chit that I am, a taste is not enough. I have to finish the candy dry before I could resume my normal mode of living. And unfortunately, coming out of the trance, realizing that the candy is all gone, I feel disappointment. Disappointmen...more

This is my first review of a Lisa Kleypas book, and after reading this, I certainly feel inspired, yet still at a loss for words What a heart-wrenching tear-jerker this was!! Just amazing!!

Excellent characterization in this one. I could see McKenna, his facial expressions, I heard the sound of his voice as he spoke. McKenna is definitely a complex, dynamic character. Driven by thoughts of revenge, he seeks out his childhood love after leaving her 12 years prior to pay her back for all the wrongs...more

4.5/5 stars. This book was essentially a prequel to the Wallflowers series by Lisa Kleypas, featuring the Westcott family sisters and how they met the American men to which they ended up married. I'm guessing the only reason it hasn't been labeled as being part of the Wallflowers series is because none of the wallflower girls make an appearance being that it takes place before they get together.

I really loved the character of McKenna. He was very villanesque in his need for revenge at times in t...more

3 1/2 stars (but I'm rounding it down to 3 stars because I didn't like it as much as the other LK books I've rated 4 stars.)

I'm not going to write a review because there are already a gazillion reviews not only here but all over the internet. I'm just going to point out what I liked/disliked in this book, since I seem to be in the minority for not loving it as "everyone else".

Likes:
- McKenna, Gideon, Livia, Westclif... In sum, every character but Aline (and her father, of course.)

I just read it for the second time and it was even better than the first! I loved this book! Couldn't put it down. LK is such a magnificent author, and I simply adore her. If you have read some other books by this author but not this one yet, just do it and don't wait any longer because IMHO it is one of her bests!

I'm in love with a stable boy...no really. ::sigh:: McKenna

I loved Aline and McKenna, and how we got to see them before the betrayal.

I thought the way McKenna came back to hurt Aline was soo well done. I'm sure I've mentioned it before, but I am a sucker for the betrayal and redemption plot...but only if it works. And this one worked. I agreed with Aline th...more

I loved this book! This was a tragic, yet beautiful love story with great characters.
Aline and McKenna were childhood friends that soon realized that they greatly loved each other. Unfortunately circumstances were against them, as Aline was born into aristocracy, while McKenna was merely a stable boy. When Alines father found out about their forbidden romance, he forced his daughter to send McKenna away and tell him to never come back.
Twelve years later, McKenna returns, having made a fortune a...more

Don't start this book unless you're prepared to stay up all night reading it. I started this book before bed. Big mistake! I couldn't put it down and I didn't get ANY sleep. I just HAD to finish it in one reading.

The love story between McKenna and Aline is a true love story. You felt their love for eachother from the very first page. Not many authors can take a stablehand and turn him into a hero that women from EVERY social class can fall in love with. Lisa Kleypas does a SUPERB job at this th...more

Flew by this one in no time. Didn't mean that it was any less poignant though. It was a very sad sorry in some ways. That the heroine thought she was doing the right thing by pushing her true love away forever. But they see each other in 12 years and things are just as they are again. But things have happened to the heroine and she thinks she can't trust him like she hasn't trusted any other man. Great story.. also nice supporting story of the other sister as well... wraps up both of their stori...more

If I were asked to choose one special book by my favourite author Lisa Kleypas, it would have to be AGAIN THE MAGIC, the prequel to her Wallflower series. The emotional impact of this powerful and moving love story never diminishes no matter how many times I read it.

Aline Marsden and John McKenna are young and passionately in love, but it's a forbidden love. Aline is the eldest daughter of the Earl of Westcliff while McKenna is a mere stable lad on her father's estate. Their happiness comes to a...more

10*

This book gets 10* because we are fortunate to have two 5* romances for the price of one in this devastatingly perfect book. Good God, if you haven’t read a Lisa Kleypas book, why the hell not? Go out now and pick this one up! I love this book so much I hate it. I hate it for the way it literally hurt my heart for these two lovers, and I hate it for the sobbing mess it made of me. A book made.me.sob. Can you imagine a love, a chemistry, a connection so integral to your very being that it woul...more

I absolutely LOVE this book!

At a very young age Lady Aline Marsden and McKenna, the stable boy, kept their love a secret because it was a match that could never be. When Aline's father found out he banished McKenna from their home and threatened to ruin his life if he ever returned. Aline knew that McKenna would never leave unless she told him she didn’t want him. So in order to keep McKenna safe from her fathers harm she broke both of their hearts and pushed him away. Years later McKenna return...more

When you think it can't get worse, it always does, n'est pas? *blinks at average rating of 3.8* This novel had the worst start of any book I have ever read; ever. I know people stop reading, even throw books away, but this is the first time ever I thought I'd have to do that - after a couple of pages of the author telling about the oh-so-young 19 (or 17 or 18, she keeps forgetting) year old "lovers" and their soulmatiness - only in less words than I use here. I shouldn't grace it with a review,...more

I did a reread of this and decided to try to do a review. I love Lisa Kleypas and I know this one is considered a favorite by many. I liked it but it was by no means a favorite for me. It's hard to tell what will make a book a "WOW" for me. This one didn't do that for me. I still liked it and will keep my copy on my keeper shelf but it won't be going with me on the desert island nor will it be one of the ones I grab as I leave a burning house. 5 stars!!

I love this book because of the feeling it gave me after I finished reading it. I was SATISFIED.

The story started kinda heavy and dark, it was overall bittersweet in the beginning.
McKenna and Lady Aline's relationship started out as childhood friends then they eventually fall helplessly in love with each other. But while Lady Aline was a born aristocrat, McKenna was just a mere stable boy. Eventually they were separated.

Their reunion was bittersweet and I was so anxious to know what wil...more

I had no idea that this book even existed until about 2 1/2 weeks ago. Under The Covers Book Blog, one of my favorite review blogs, had a post about the unsung heroes of romance. In this list was McKenna from Again the Magic, the prequel novel to Lisa Kleypas's Wallflower series. How on earth did I miss a Wallflower book? 4.5 stars Wow! This is my first historical by Lisa Kleypas, and my second from her altogether. It was such an engrossing and enjoyable read, though angstier than I was expecting. The revolving themes around this book, to me, were pride and second chances.

AGAIN THE MAGIC was SO SO GOOD! I read the back of the book and was pretty dang intrigued. It says:

I love the intense emotions in Lisa Kleypas's stories. Some of her stories are so heart-wrenching and moving that they drive me to tears several times. I especially love her dark and tortured heroes. McKenna is definitely one of those. I really liked this book, but one thing really bugs me about Kleypas's stories (or at least the few that I have read so far): she gives a lot of focus to the secondary couples, whether it's preparing readers for the next book in a series, or in a standalone book l...more
