I admit to having preconceived ideas about this book. I picked it up at AWP because it sounded interesting, but I was not eager to read it and didn't expect much as I have never heard of Bauer. I should have known if it won FC2s innovative fiction prize that it would be a quality work.

It reminded me of one my favorite books, Snake by Kate Jennings. While this bills itself as a novel, at less than 80 pp. it's a novella in flashes. Before even reading Bauer's bio online I could tell she was a poet

Beautifully evocative, poetic, poignant .... Tricia Bauer's book tenderly traces her father's departure, to old age, to Alzheimer's, and ultimately to death.

Bauer's writing style is 100% original ... what a lovely, insightful voice she has. The writing aches with the deterioration of person, spirit, relationship ... yet the pain floats sweetly on cushions of memory, love. It is an astonishing mix.
