Dieses Buch hat mich von Anfang an mitgerissen. Es wird nicht um den heißen Brei geredet und fängt auch gleich sehr spannend an! Mitten im Buch denkt man, dass es nicht mehr spannender werden kann, doch der Autor legt immer wieder nach und man wünscht sich noch schneller lesen zu können. Auch wenn das Buch schon etwas älter ist, ist es dennoch eines meiner absoluten Lieblinge!

Allerdings möchte ich auch dazu sagen, dass es nichts für Leser/innen ist, die es nicht blutig mögen.. zwischendrin geht...more

Estava com bastantes expectativas com este livro, apesar de ter lido críticas medianas. Foi, apesar disso, uma boa surpresa.
Esperava mais "sangue", mas a acção compensa bem isso, quase sentimos o tic tac do relógio, o bater do coração, ao avançar na leitura. Difícil de largar, extremo suspense, um final bastante surpreendente. Estava a precisar dum livro assim!

Au cours des dernières années, j’ai lu énormément de polar, étant une fan du genre. Celui-ci m’a bien plu. On se laisse porter volontiers par l’intrigue. Nous suivons le déroulement de l’histoire à travers les yeux et les pensées des différents protagonistes. Au fil de l’enquête, chaque personnage se dévoile peu à peu et leur passé est une pièce de plus au puzzle que le tueur construit. L’auteur joue avec nos nerfs jusqu’à la dernière ligne. This story took the wind out of my sails, very dark, intense, and brutal. Qualcuno mi spieghi, per favore, cosa mi significa 'sta "ciofeca" di giallo con pretese psicologiche. Libro che si è fatto leggere, ma all'autore imputo un po' di lentezza nella parte centrale e un allungamento forzato del "brodo" laddove avrebbe potuto invece rendere il ritmo molto più martellante e angosciante. As motivações deste assassino, que esconde-se por trás de uma máscara de diabo e sendo conhecido pelos sobreviventes como tal, são desconhecidas mas depressa percebemos que a manipulação emocional é o ponto fulcral de toda a história. Ele quer e precisa de esmagar as relações, colocar o casal virado um contra o outro matando por completo o amor que existia entre eles. Os detalhes das suas torturas são horripilantes com pormenores de deixar qualquer um sem fôlego.
Temos várias perspectivas neste livro, no inicio de cada capítulo sabemos sobre quem vamos ler e que parte da ação iremos conhecer sendo que apenas a do detetive Nelson é contada na primeira pessoa, o resto da narrativa é-nos dada na terceira pessoa.
Todo este livro é arrepiante, Steve Mosby revelou-se para mim um verdadeiro mestre dentro do género com uma inspiração fora do normal. Apesar de ter lido poucos policiais na minha vida, tendo optado por outros géneros literários, consigo perceber a astucia e inteligência por detrás desta trama verdadeiramente empolgante e envolvente.
A história absorve-nos desde o início e não há maneira de não nos sentirmos transportados para a ação, ainda assim estava a achar que apesar de bem escrito na verdade era demasiado óbvio, estava por demais evidente quem era o assassino e essa parte era um pouco dececionante pois esperava um pouco mais de suspense. Contudo tinha esperança que surgisse uma reviravolta e não me desiludi. Fiquei completamente estarrecida com a genialidade de Mosby que pega nos mais pequenos detalhes fazendo de um bom policial um livro extraordinário.(less)

When it comes to reading thrillers – or any kind of non-fantasy for that matter – I’m not really what you call, adventurous and I try to stick to the beaten path. Or at least, the path that I’ve beaten. I do know that by doing this, I’ll probably miss a lot of good books, but frankly, I don’t care. My main interest is Fantasy and everything else I read is just to shake things up, once in a while. So if I’m missing out on some great books there, I don’t really mind. I had never heard of him before and wouldn’t have bothered to check him out – sorry Steve! – if it wasn’t for a glowing recommendation. I am so glad I did read this book, cause it was everything I want from a thriller!

Mark Nelson is a young officer who joins the team of John Mackey, a very successful detective. Nelson considers himself lucky to have landed the job, but he might regret it when a man is found burned to death in his own house. All evidence leads to the Fifty-Fifty killer, a vicious man who targets couples ant tortures them until they choose who lives and who dies. When a young man is able to escape this vicious game, they have till dawn to find his girlfriend. And time is running out…
Right off the back, I’ll say that this is a magnificent story. It’s dark, gritty and gruesome and reminds me of the earlier – and better – thrillers by Mo Hayder. It’s a very clever plot that keeps you guessing until the very end and nine out of ten, you’ll be wrong. Mosby doesn’t shy away from the gore in the way he kills of characters, but I have to applaud him for how he handles this. There is a fine line between an excellent gruesome murder and gore for shock value. This book is a prime example of the former, cause while gory, it never feels over the top or too much for comfort – although comfort is probably not a word I would use for this book, cause you just won’t get comfortable reading this.
The reason why is the killer himself. The way he operates and the way Mosby wrote it all down, made me anxious and paranoid. I did catch myself peeping over the top of my book to be sure nobody was there and other absurd behaviour triggered by the book. As I said, the way the plot unravels is very clever and I just couldn’t second-guess it. When the police figured something out, I figured it out because of them and I was as astounded as they were.
The characters were quite good as well. I always have a hard time sympathising with detectives and the like, but Nelson was actually a pretty nice guy and he was easy to like. My favourite character, though, must be Jodie. She is one of the victims who gets trapped in the killer’s game and I admire her strength and courage to survive. The killer himself was an excellent villain, completely cuckoo, he gave me shivers all over my body. He is, by far, the most terrifying villain to feature in a thriller and I don’t think I’ll come across someone who can live up to him any soon.
Another thing that makes this book quite a hit, is the writing. Mosby’s prose is just excellent for this kind of novel. It’s not polished and slick, but has that gritty tone which makes it all the more believable. The pacing is spot on as well. It starts off slow – without bordering on boring – but picks up speed pretty quickly and never looks back after that. Halfway through, when the race to safe Jodie starts, the pace quickens to a relentless speed, which suited the story so well. Excellent job.

You might think that, after reading such a great book like this, I might change my policy when it comes to choosing thrillers, but I don’t. I have plenty books of my own waiting to be devoured and on top of that, a bucketload of recommendations, so I’ll stick to my beaten path. The 50/50 Killer, however, was such a great book that I’ll simply add Mosby’s name to that list. Consider him beaten.(less)

Normally, that wouldn't stop me, but in the popular thrillergenre I tend to go for the big names. I felt that if someone wasn't a well-known author, he probably wouldn't be very good. With Mosby, I was so intrigued by the idea for the book, that I tried my luck.

Son mode operandi : il s'en prend a un couple. Avant d'assassiner un des deux, il les séquestre et les torture en demandant "qui des deux va survivre".
Partie en vacances avec une réserve de près de 10 bouquins, je me suis laissée tentée par celui-ci au détour d'un rayon de grande surface...
Un résumé plutôt alléchant. Par contre, je le redis, je ne me suis pas laissée embobinée par les commentaires sur la couverture. Ces petites phrases sensées apâter le passant.
Je débute l'introduction avant de m'endormir... merci, pour le cauchemar en début de nuit.
Effectivement, la mise en bouche est très peu ragoutante. Un meurtre plutôt glauque qui laisse supposer une suite dans le même goût. Et effectivement, l'auteur nous offre quelques scènes à ne pas lire devant son assiette.
L'intrigue est assez bien ficelée. Je me suis laissée prendre au jeu. Même si le rythme se ralentit un peu vers la fin... un coup de théâtre clôture le récit.
Un récit écrit à plusieurs voix. On passe ainsi d'un narrateur à l'autre.
J'ai bien apprécié cette construction qui donne à découvrir la psychologie des personnages de "l'intérieur".
Je ne dirais pas que je me suis trouvée face à un thriller incontournable, mais c'était une assez bonne lecture de vacances.
Je conseillerai ce livre aux dévoreurs de thriller. Sur une échelle, je le place en dessous de l'âme du mal ou d'In Tenebris de Chattam, mais bien au dessus de Prédateurs, du même auteur (pour me borner à une seule référence...)
Donc un bon moment de lecture.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book it was very engaging and a little bit frightening. This book also has a very clever and intriguing twist towards the end that i don't think anyone could have expected. The words flowed easily and i found myself racing through the pages.

Thriller avvincente, che gioca in modo discreto la carta dei diversi punti di vista del racconto: a circa metà si intuisce un possibile svolgimento, ma il colpo di scena è sempre dietro l'angolo. L'epilogo è un po' fumoso, avrei preferito un po' più di chiarezza e che fosse lasciato meno spazio alle deduzioni del lettore.

Definitely not my favorite, but it also wasn't terrible. I might have just been having a short attention span, but this novel could not keep my attention, no matter how hard I tried. I really enjoy psychological mysteries and anything that is just a bit more "out-there" than typical books, so I did enjoy the idea behind this book, but not so much when it came to actually reading it.

5 estrelas para este livro parece-me muito muito pouco.... Uma história muito bem construída, desenvolvida com uma fluidez desconcertante, com o suspense a cada virar de página e ansiando por chegar à próxima e à próxima para descobrir o que se vai passar... Um final.... bom.... um final que me pôs a ler quase 3 linhas ao mesmo tempo xD

Um autor que vai sem dúvida andar sempre na minha wislist com qualquer livro que escreva =)

Wauw! Wat een geweldig boek is dit! Helemaal in de sfeer van de boeken van Cody McFadyen.
Ik vond dit boek van begin tot eind spannend. Toen ik het las, dacht ik dat ze er zo een tv serie van konden maken, in de sfeer van Crime Scene Investigation. Het feit dat het plot tot aan het einde niet duidelijk was voor mij, vond ik ook erg verrassend! Ik heb het boek in een week uitgelezen en dat is voor mij snel ... een echte pageturner dus!

Heel erg goed boek die ik aan iedereen kan aanraden. Het boek sleept je mee met de verhalen van onder andere John Mercer, Mark Nelson & natuurlijk de moordenaar met het duivelsmasker. Het boek blijft je boeien & vooral het plot is erg verrassend.

my first thriller.... it was very exciting, I'm easily scared so I was afraid that the story would haunt me but it didn't! it's just a GREAT story, it's a whodunit but it's very hard to know who did it! the plot very unexpected. just great!

a detective is desperate to catch the serial killer that eluded him years before. the 50/50 killer liked to make couples choose which of them lives. he is back, but now his game has changed: why?

the story builds well. solidly written.
the ending is a little naff and protracted.

all in all a good story, well executed. i'll be looking out for more steve mosby books.
